Scotty Kilmer when is it time to stop putting money into a car. (My car is a Honda Accord 1997 4door 4cyl nonvtec {stock} automatic./girlfriend drives 2002 Nissan Xterra automatic 6cyl not supercharged

Scotty Kilmer you do realize that most new cars come with low profile tires. Mclarens ride amazing with low profile tires, so do corvettes with Magnetic ride control and even the new GMC Sierras with the 20/22 inch wheels. Modern suspension and new tire production techniques and technologies make it so that most if not all of you’re points are *invalid*. What you’re saying would be true, if we were still in 2002. Get with the times my man.

Jim Finigan usually people increase rim size when they go to low profile tires. There are lots of tire/rim size calculators online.

and what is more safe? bumpy free ride or better cornering of the 18" rims? yeah if u drive slow have a lot of speed bumps, potholes 15/16" for a comfy ride, but if u want to be safe driving fast? the more modern cars than a toyota celica doing easy pz 155mph they need low profile tyres ma friend otherwise u may hug a tree when overtaking

I got lots of friends driving masaratti Ferrari Bentley Benzamg bmw m. I’m telling you a truth. Those thin tires are nightmare! Extremely! You don’t want to imagine how many times they change their cars’ tires a year! A hole on road means broken tires!!! It is like that bad! That’s why I stay away from these tires.
Rusty Shackleford (1 month ago)
Wider they are the faster they wear out?! Are you retarded? Seriously. You spout so much bullshit in your videos... time to retire, Scotty. They wear out faster because they are softer rubber. Soft is sticky and wears fast, hard is slippery but lasts longer. my truck has 315’s on it, they should wear out super fast with that logic, but I’m sure I’ll get 45-60k on them. Wide is good! More surface area to distribute the weight of the vehicle means each square inch has less to deal with. Quite the opposite of what you describe. Here’s a crazy idea... maybe some people value driving feedback and performance over feeling like you’re sitting on a trampoline and sliding out of your seat around turns because your car is leaning so much. You’re moving down a road, if you want to sit down and not feel any bumps get a bath. I’ve had 18” tires with a 35 profile. Never ruined a tired because of a small sidewall.

Im only 21, but have been into cars since forever. Am I missing something here or does it not really matter. That curb rash is actually driver error not tires. And yeah it may make it bumpy but send it, cause racecar. And car companys come out with these as oem deals soooooooo whats the bad? Personal preference?
Lee Centner (1 month ago)
i totally agree with you Scotty! Now the idiotic car companies are selling their top end models with 20 inch rims or larger with those stupid low profile tires. Sheeple, I mean people buy them because they "look cool". All the while they ride and transmit road noise similar to that of a stage coach. My dad says he feels like he is dragging his rear end around when riding in one of these so equipped vehicles.

Normal tyres might last 60-70,000 miles?!?!?! Enjoy your blowouts with your fatigued sidewalls Scotty...... The tyre will not wear out faster because its wider. If it were made of the exact same compound and were put under the exact same load cycles as a 'normal tyre' the the wider one would last longer! What you seem to be missing is that standard cheap tyres are often made of very hard compounds that wear slower, have less rolling resistance and lower noise levels BUT sacrifice grip and handling performance due to this. A low profile tyre is more likely going to be going on a 'sporty' or more performance based car that a 'normal' tyre so the compounds they make the low profile tyres out of are often softer and more flexible to offer better grip and handling at the cost of sone longevity. I personally would much rather have lower profile tyres that grip better, stop shorter and dont make my car handle like a boat at the cost of them wearing out a bit faster.

Yea and get the dumb companies just have to sell the, with that crap OEM. Then comes the sticker shock to replace those things. Nothing but a BIMBO. all flash great to look at but mostly useless.......and super $$$$$$$$-
J K (3 months ago)
just a tip , low profile tyres do not increase performance or handling , there is a reason why high end race cars , track slicks ,drag slicks and semi slicks have a large side wall , its to flex and bend over the track/road to gaining as much traction as you can , think of it like this when you lay down on a hard bed less of your body is contacting the bed because it quite stiff, when you lay down on a soft bed it tends to wrap around you and causing more contact . tyres work the same but also including compound/brand and size you will be spending about 3x more and only get half the amount of distance but they are for people who enjoy driving hard with high powered cars .
leneanderthalien (3 months ago)
I think the best is to choice average tires: too high profile tires over 65=imprecise driving , to low profiles under 45= uncompfortable driving... the best choice is 50-55 profile hight=good precision, and correct comfort

I laugh every time I see a lifted 4x4 with 38 inches tire low profile. To many pavement princesses
vdelrio999 (3 months ago)
Broad question - can you replace new car's low profile wheels with "normal profile" wheels? I don't see the point of having and cruising around in a high performance car if I have to carefully avoid pot holes and speed bumps in Houston (and change wheels out every 3 mos or so).
Nate TheDaddy (3 months ago)
All very true, but manufacturers need to start making them better. No one likes wide sidewall tires anymore, they look horrible. New technology needs to be entered that makes wheels look better and fill in wheelwell gap without being impractical. Sorry, anything under 18" at this point looks old dated and ugly on any car, the trend is not going to reverse either, so tire brands that make better low profile tires will be the successful ones.
Dacia Sandero guys (3 months ago)
Low profile tyres has less roll resistance thus you get more MPG than normal tyres so in the end, you will use more more on fuel and lack the aesthetic beauty of low profile tyres
TheNauseator (4 months ago)
One important thing that Scotty did not mention is that cars which are designed for low profile tires have their suspensions specifically designed/tuned for those tires. If you take a standard car (say boy racer Civic) and slap big rims and low profile tires on it, it will ride poorly, but if the car was built for LP tires, all is well. The only drawback I've noticed so far is increased tire/road noise. Other than that, the car corners like it's possessed LOL! My Passat was designed for LP tires so it came with LP tires and yuge rims, and it rides great. With the increased cornering capabilities stopping distance, and overall handling, I don't see myself purchasing a car with "regular" tires. Yes, those tires do cost more, but I like their performance MUCH better.

I dont get it... My VW had 14inch stock wheels with very fat tires now I got a set of TSW wheels, with a 205/45/16 tires and it rides so much better along with my suspension upgrades. I call bullshit
HYDRA DYNAMIC (4 months ago)
You are definitely right about the alignment being off just a little. I had to buy 2 new tires because of bad struts that had worn down the inside of my low profile tires. The “old” tires only had 20,000 miles on them I was pissed.

My '15 Kia Cadenza came stock with 245/45/18 and is the smoothest riding car I have ever owned. I'm a little confused here Scotty.
jin5632 (4 months ago)
I went from 15" to 17" lower profile tyres, and after that I got so much trouble. I ran into 3 potholes and the tires got punctured even the rim got dented and my suspension got damaged. Then I decided to put 16", now I am more comfortable.

Freedom Cobra (4 months ago)
Tires are so darn expensive, do you think someone should pay extra for the tires that need to be replaced after 50k rather then 30k?
Brem (4 months ago)
That isn't a reason not to buy low profile tires. That is a reason not to reduce the profile on a car not designed for it. My car comes factory on 245/35R19 and rides wonderfully because the suspension is designed around that profile. If I went on a minus fitment it would handle terribly. Also your assertion that a wider tire wears out faster because of extra friction is just nonsense.

So is it a good idea for me to get smaller wheels and bigger tires?
Rasti Al (4 months ago)
Hey scotty i love ya man, but omitted one fact, low profile tires are wider yes, but that's a +, cause you get more tread on the road, thus more traction, thus more controle ! Otherwise spot on video

low profile with 20” stock is boring unless you’re 85yrs old 😂

When I purchased my 2001 Chevrolet Suburban the car had 22 inch rims and lower profile tires. After driving around all these years, I am finally going to replace my busted rims and tires for factory models this weekend. The rims have caused me nothing but grief, pain and money. The tires were uber expensive and I would get flats ALL OF THE TIME. Not only that, the owner before me decided it was a fantastic idea to have different nut locks for each of the rims and left no keys behind. I had to hire a mechanic to bust the locks with power tools only after towing my car to the shop. Few mechanics had large enough equipment to remove the tires off of my rims. What a nightmare!!! I'm glad it's over.
THECH0SEN0NE82 (4 months ago)
learned this lesson on a dark rainy night.. i never saw it coming :'( driving as normal as i can and BAM!! fell into a pothole full speed i literally felt the car lower hit and raise back up.. i get home and the rim was totally caved in on impact and the tire punctured. could not find a replacement wheel or any shop that would make repairing the ONE wheel worth while so dished out the money for some 2nd hand wheels and got some regular freaking tires..

Smaller tire and bigger rims means it'll go through regular break pads really fast.
Ryan L. (4 months ago)
Low profile tires usually require larger wheels as well, which weigh a lot more than stock size. Heavier wheel weight reduces effective power due to parasitic loss and ruins handling. Sometimes lower profile tires can help handling by decreasing sidewall flex but if you look at racecars like Formula 1's and Nascar, they use wheels as small as 15' because they're much more effective at acceleration and handling.
moendopi (4 months ago)
That low pro looks like it was a good bit over inflated..
