3004 ratings | 489265 views
Hi there, This scarf is 70" before it is halved. If you don't know how to knit or need some basic tips watch my beginners knitting video first at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebNPt... Questions and Answers about this scarf is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuyJl... If you need help starting with a new yarn you can go to 15:40 on this video it changes color but is the same technique https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFyEl... This is my daughter modeling the scarf and the infinity scarf is done in ribbing. It measured about 70 inches before I halved it and sewed it up. It is really easy to do. Great video thanks! About how wide is the scarf? I'll be using thinner needles so want to estimate more or less how many points to do. Thanks!

Rewind it and play it slower. You can choose the speed of the video on both mobile and desktop, by the way.

I found this EXTREMELY helpful!!!! I've watched quite a few videos online, and looked through hundreds of photos, but none have come close to how helpful you have been.  As a beginning knitter, it really means a lot.  Thank you for breaking it down step by step and slowly going through each step.  This has rekindled my excitement in the craft of knitting. (: Thank you again!

+Autumn Penberthy Hi there, the scarf measures 70 inches before it is halved :)
agcitrusstudios (2 years ago)
I love this scarf and i want to make one too! How long did it take to make it?
GillysCraftWorld (2 years ago)
It took me a couple of days as I do other projects at the same time. It is pretty quick if you just do it by itself. Depending on how much time you take and how quickly you knit I am sure you could do it in a week or sooner.
agcitrusstudios (2 years ago)

Hi, this is a great project for me, a beginner. I'm ordering this same yarn on Joanne website, and size 17 needles. Question, how long should the size 17 needles be? Is 10 inch long enough? Thank you for posting this lesson!
GillysCraftWorld (2 years ago)
+Candyce Parks Hi Candyce, that length should be fine :)

http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/img-thing?.out=jpg&size=l&tid=23530187 I know this picture isn't that clear but I am trying to make this scarf for my daughter that is driving me crazy by this picture it looks like s rib and purl stitch but the problem here this scarf is loose not so tight , is there any way you could tell and how would I do it loose. Thanks
GillysCraftWorld (2 years ago)
+Gabe Ferreira Hi Gabe, sorry that I am only getting back to you now but to make it looser you would want to use larger/thicker needles, that will make your work looser :)
Sup Bra (2 years ago)

GillysCraftWorld (2 years ago)
+A-NONymouse Tic That's fantastic :)
Vivianne Angulo (2 years ago)
When you are barely starting the scarf in the very begging do you start with one row stich and another purl? Because in you other video you did for beginners you started with one row stich and another purl
GillysCraftWorld (2 years ago)
Oh wow, that's great.! Glad they are enjoying it. I know when I hear South Africans, it warms my heart so I can understand what they are saying. Thanks for getting in touch with me :)
Philip Vitols (2 years ago)
Thanks so much.! Actually my wife Liz and daughter Kelly are the South Africans. We are all sitting at the table and they were watching your video. Great job! Thanks.
GillysCraftWorld (2 years ago)
+Vivianne Angulo This stitch is knit 1 stitch and then purl 1 stitch, You repeat this. So it is every stitch that alternates and not every row.

The very first line of the infinity scarf, do you start with kn, pu for it or just knit the first one then switch?
GillysCraftWorld (2 years ago)
+Shane Alexander I could definitely do that. that is a good idea.
Shane (2 years ago)
+GillysCraftWorld I'd love for you to do a video on how to add a simple knitted pocket on a scarf. Just something to stick your hands in when its at about waist length.
GillysCraftWorld (2 years ago)
My scarf measured 70 inches before folding it in half :)
Yuki Huynh (2 years ago)
+GillysCraftWorld how long was your scarf?
GillysCraftWorld (2 years ago)
+Shane Alexander Hi Shane, sorry for some reason I am not finding your question, about ending with a knit instead of a purl stitch. So I though I would answer you here. Not sure if you have watched this video but it should help you with this question https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebNPtVePrh0

I have some Red Heart soft 4 ply (American size, same as 8 ply AUS) and some size 15 needles, so will use two strands at once to make it a big bulkier.. What do you think?
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
That sounds good. I am sure it will be great!

Noemi Espin (3 years ago)
the teaching is a little fast but is the best video that explain how to do an infinite scarf I have found. thank you for sharing .
Miss Webster (3 years ago)
Hi there. I'm thinking of possibly using this for a class project, but I'm wondering how long it took you to knit the whole scarf, from beginning to end? An estimate is fine, because I'm just trying to figure out if it's a project that can be done within a school quarter. Thanks.
GillysCraftWorld (2 years ago)
+Miss Webster Hi Miss Webster, I am so sorry that I didn't reply to you but I am only seeing your comment now :) Not sure why it didn't show up. Anyway If this is any help now, the scarf didn't take me very long to make as the thick needles and yarn make each row go quickly. I could do the scarf in a day but as a beginner it would be a bit longer depending on how quickly you knit. It could be make shorter to go faster as well. :)
Carol Ward (3 years ago)

Scarf is gorgeous!  Did you knit the stunningly beautiful white sweater your daughter is wearing?  If so, how could I get the pattern?  I'm happy to pay for it!  Thank you so much.
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi Jacklyn, I am so glad that you like the scarf. The jersey I did not make. It is a gorgeous sweater. I am going to be making one in the future for sure :)
Lisa M (3 years ago)
Lovely!  I am learning rib stitch.  I have knit and purl down and have used both straight and circular needles.  Can I try this on circular needles?  Thank you for great videos. ps Do you have a recommendation on circular brand needles? I am thinking about interchangeable needles. Again thank you.
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
+Lisa M :)
Lisa M (3 years ago)
+GillysCraftWorld Thank you for your reply and recommendation. I appreciate it :)
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi Lisa. I am so glad that you are enjoying my videos! :) The interchangeable needles that I use are Denise Interchangeable's. I like them. Amazon has them. You can do this on circular needles but I wouldn't make it in the round as it will come out too thick, as it will be doubled or you would have to cast on too many stitches (the length of the scarf). :)
Madam Pudding (3 years ago)
Hi :) I tried to make this scarf but when i knit the string between the needles gets longer while i knit. What am i doing wrong? :((((
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
That is good. Please keep trying, you will be glad when you get it right :)
Madam Pudding (3 years ago)
+GillysCraftWorld its hard to explain because im not good at english. I will ask a friend that knows how to knit but thank you for answering on my comment :)  i will try it until i can make this scarf ;D
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi there, I am not too sure what you mean. I am not sure which part is getting longer. Maybe you can explain a bit more :)
Sonny Williamson (3 years ago)
That is gorgeous. You've inspired me, definitely trying this once I've finished the one I'm currently knitting.
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
:)
Sonny Williamson (3 years ago)
Lovely, my next project is a hat to go with my wonky scarves. Consider me subscribed. All the best! :-)
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi Sonny, Gosh, that was so funny :) I am very proud of you, wow. You completed the project and I am sure it looks wonderful. Keep practising as you will just keep getting better. I am sure that your girlfriend will appreciate it. I am busy making a cream cabled shawl/poncho type thing at the moment and will upload that video in I think 4 weeks as I need to put something else up before. You might want to try that one. It is also using rib but has 1 row making a cable. Not sure if you know what that looks like but it is very popular. My daughter is eyeing it for herself lol Well, thanks so much for letting me know how yours turned out. I am on facebook if you ever want to post your projects. Look forward to chatting again. :)
Sonny Williamson (3 years ago)
+GillysCraftWorld Just to let you know, I finished my scarf. If you saw it, you'd probably stifle a laugh; it's nothing like as uniform and neat as yours. In fact, as this was my first knit/purl scarf, it was a bit of a Frankenstein's monster in the end - holes here and there, the stitching crossing and getting garbled all over the place and I somehow managed to end up with more rows at the end than I started with, so it fanned out. :P  I managed to salvage it though it's a bit more like a snug snood now. Still, I like it because it's my first effort and I'm sure my girlfriend will at least appreciate the effort. Luckily, it's the thought that counts. ;-)  Thanks again for the inspiration!
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
+Sonny Williamson :)
Bevie Arlene (3 years ago)
Hi Gilly, I love your pattern and your scarf! In order to make this with my own preferences in yarn and not to be as bulky, I bought a Bulky 5 yarn that called for size 10 needles, but I did the same thing as you and went with a needle that was 2 sizes bigger. I went with size 13. I hope it turns out similar to your pattern and can't wait to see how it goes. Please give me your thoughts on this :)
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
That is awesome! Glad it is working out :)
Bevie Arlene (3 years ago)
I've done a few inches and it looks great :) I've noticed my scarf edges are fairly loose, so I guess the best way is just to pull tighter on the end stitches? :)
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi, Bevie, So glad you like the scarf. As long as you are using a bulky 5 yarn, your scarf is going to be pretty chunky like mine. If you went with a size 4 yarn you would get one that is not quite as bulky. Try a little piece with your yarn and needles and see if you like it :)
Destinee Ross (3 years ago)
Hello, I'm wondering if you tried to wear it around your head? I want to make a scarf that i can have around my head and neck and I'm considering casting on a bit more to widen it for more head coverage… I'm using size 15 needles if that makes any difference. Great video!
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Fantastic, Destinee. That sounds so nice and comfie! Glad it worked out :) If you are on my facebook I would love to see a picture.
Destinee Ross (3 years ago)
+GillysCraftWorld I just finished the scarf and it is perfect! warm, soft, and big enough to put over my head in case I forget a hat.
Destinee Ross (3 years ago)
Alright, thank you very much!
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi, Destinee, that is a great idea. It will be fine to cast on extra stitches to make it wider. :)
Marina Yapport (3 years ago)
Hi can you leave a link for the color. The one I found looks greyish/brown and yours looks greish/white.  http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_15?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=little+rock+granite+yarn&sprefix=little+rock+gra%2Caps%2C262

Courtney Moriah (3 years ago)
Hello i was curious what the material blend of the yarn is? Also what is the net weight of that yarn as well? Thanks!! Perfect scarf i want mine to be huge and stretchy as well
Fluffeh Unicorn (3 years ago)
Hi, i really love your videos!! Is there a chance that you can make a video tutorial on how to make a magic scarf?
Fluffeh Unicorn (3 years ago)
yay! thank you sooo much :D
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi there, I can definitely look into that. I was looking to see what a magic scarf is and it looks like a regular scarf with the capacity to be worn many ways. I think that the key is in the yarn that is being used. It looks like it is a stretchy yarn. I can see what I can do. :)
fairylovr33 (3 years ago)
Go way to fast! For those of us trying to learn this doesn't help at all! Should probably say in the title this is more for people who already know how to knit well.
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi there, Sorry this video didn't work for you. I am not teaching you to knit in this video but am showing you how to make the scarf. If you look in the info box below I have attached a video that will show you how to knit. Hope this helps :) Here is the link to that video  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebNPtVePrh0  Here is also a link to a video that answers 7 questions to knitting problems  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuyJl4mkOUc    Have an awesome day :)
Sona Singh (3 years ago)
Hi again, so I've started again since it didn't work out the first time. I have no idea where the rest of my comments went. But I was just wondering, I started with a knit, and ended with a purl. When I'm starting the second row, do I start with a knit or a purl? Since I ended with a purl, would I start again with a purl? Or a knit? I'm really confused haha.
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Here is another video to help you with the ribbing  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebNPtVePrh0
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi Sona. Don't be confused lol, it is pretty easy. If you ended with a purl you will start with a knit. You start with the opposite stitch. I have just posted a video with some questions and answers and that is on there which should help you. Here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuyJl4mkOUc    Let me know if you need any more help and if this helps you.
Sona Singh (3 years ago)
Also, I should start with a knit? Correct? What should I start and end with? And then start and again with again?
Daysi Santillanes (3 years ago)
Do you know how many rows you knit?
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Daysi, I did 132 rows :)
versaviya legkun (3 years ago)
What's the needle size? US 17? or 17mm?
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Versaviya, I am using a size 17 US. Sorry I didn't see your comment until now! :)
Quinne Davey (3 years ago)
How many yards did you use for this scarf? I have 1 skein of Magnum yarn which is 123 yards and wonder will that be enough?
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
+Quinne Davey My pleasure :)
Quinne Davey (3 years ago)
Thanks Gilly
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Sorry, I used 2 skeins, maybe 3. You could try making it shorter, unless you want to get more yarn. Let me know if you need any help :)
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi, Quinne, My skein is 81yds and I used maybe 2 skeins. So you should be able to make yours much the same size as mine. I will also work if it is slightly shorter. :)
monkeysluvdani (3 years ago)
This is a fantastic tutorial!!! Thank you so much for your help! You made this much easier than trying to figure it out from a book.
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it. Let me know if you need any other help! :)
daisies (3 years ago)
What happens if I use a smaller (7mm) size needle?
Tiffany C. (2 years ago)
+bing - An old question but for anyone later who'd like to know an answer -- In the video, she uses a pair of size 17 needles or 12mm. 7mm is pretty small, especially compared to 12mm. The scarf would most likely be tight and maybe stiff. It won't be as stretchy and bouncy as the one in the video. You'll probably have to use a different, smaller yarn too since the one for the video will be too large for 7mm needles.
Breanna Lopez (3 years ago)
What do you use like what size needles ?
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
+Breanna Lopez You can use a size 15 but yours will not be quite as loose as mine. It should be ok. Give it a try and see if you like the tension that you get.Let me know if you need any help :)
Breanna Lopez (3 years ago)
What if I used a 15
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi Breanna, I am using a size 17 (US) which is a size 12 mm. :)
Nicole Fitts (3 years ago)
About how long would this scarf take to make?
C. Yaya Palace (3 years ago)
+GillysCraftWorld como tejer una banda en agujas en espanol.
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi, Nicole. That is a hard question as it depends on how fast you are and how much time you spend knitting. I could probably do it in about 3-4 days (Stopping and starting) so if someone was a beginner maybe 1 week. But if you knit a bunch at a time, probably quicker. It knits up pretty quickly! :)
rivka (3 years ago)
thank you so much for sharing this video.. i just bought the size 17 knitting needles on amazon, so i can make this scarf for myself. happy holidays!
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
My pleasure! So glad you are going to make this scarf, let me know if you need any help. Have a fantastic Christmas and New Year! :)
Stephanie Brisebois (3 years ago)
Hello, I was wondering how many balls of yarn did it take to knit this scarf? BTW - i love your video, i knit a smaller version of this ( just the one circle) and i love it
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi Stephanie, I used about 3 skeins of yarn, maybe a bit less. I am sure your smaller version must look wonderful! :)
Melissa Quinones (3 years ago)
If I start with a knit stitch and finish also with a knit stitch, when I turn the needle around to start the next row, I should start with a purl and finish with a purl stitch. Would that make the edges look funny? I mean, is it recommended that I always start with a knit stitch and finish the row with a purl? :)))
Melissa Quinones (3 years ago)
thank you! you too :)
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
+Melissa Quinones Sorry, I didn't see this but,no, it doesn't really matter, which stitch you finish with. It would be preference really. Have an awesome day!
Melissa Quinones (3 years ago)
+GillysCraftWorld Yes, it makes sense :) I was just wondering if it wouldn't look as nice if I finished with knit stitch, so I guess the answer is, that it doesn't matter?  Thanks for the quick answer!

Hi Melissa, I am so glad you asked this question, someone else also did but I wasn't able to respond for some reason the question didn't allow me to answer. So anyway, yes, you are correct. You are knitting the opposite stitch on the other side. So if you end with a knit stitch you will start with a purl st,  So whatever you finish with you will do the opp stitch on the next row.I prefer to end with a purl so I start with a knit stitch. It is preference but I prefer to do that. This is going from row to row, not in the round. The even numbers(if you cast on an even number )make you end with a purl when starting with a knit I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you need any more help! :)

Hi! I'm a beginner knitter still and have decided I wanted to try knitting an infinity scarf (great tutorial video on how, by the way). But I do have one question. When you run out of one ball of yarn, how do you end and start the new ball of yarn? Many videos I have seen never shows when and how they switch to more yarn! Thank you so much! :)

Hi, Hope.  That is a good question. Just leave a long strand of the old yarn and hold your new yarn with a new strand and start to knit again. It is a bit tricky, I try to cross my strands over in the back so it doesn't leave a hole. If you watch this video at about 14:40 I show you how to change your colors and it is the same technique https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFyEl82WzTM&list=PLYTTb4zZWBWErv1s0ZlMaVe3A20k2rfBT   Let me know if you need any other help :)

So, is it correct that each new row will start with a knit stitch? If you have 30 in a row and are starting with knit, purl, knit, purl?

Wonderful job! The scarf turned out beautiful! I suddenly got inspired to sew my own scarf today, so I'm trying to watch as many videos as I can lol. I'm 17, so I think it'll be easy start at that age to learn how to knit. I'm curious though, what's this knit method called? Is it Crochet or something? And also did you make your daughter's sweater too? It looks so pretty!

Hi Kris. I am so glad that your scarf turned out so well. You are definitely right to start early is an advantage. Gosh you will learn so much  from your age. The scarf is made in ribbing which is knitted here. I didn't make my daughter's sweater but will pass the compliment on to her. Have a fantastic day!

What is the length of the Infinity Scarf before folding it to sew into a circle (You Tube video: How to knit an infinity scarf on Jan. 31; 2014)?
GillysCraftWorld (3 years ago)
Hi Karen, My scarf measured about 70 inches before folding it in half. Have an awesome day! :)

I'm a beginner and I want to try my hand at this, but I can't find size 17 straight needles. Would size 17 circular needles work and would the circular needles make it harder in any way for a beginner?
kijana chokora (3 years ago)
Only straight needles😀

Here's another choice from Amazon if you want a nicer pair of needles: Knitter's Pride.  They are more expensive than regular Boye's or other mass crafts store needles, however.  http://www.amazon.com/Knitters-Pride-14-inch-Knitting-Needles/dp/B00BY9GTQA/ref=sr_1_126?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1417145558&sr=1-126

I don't know where you live and what stores you buy your needles from but Joann's website has them in stock so the local store might too if you have Joann's in your town.  If not, and you don't mind buying them online, here they are at Joann's website (you could also try Michaels or Hobby lobby if you don't want to buy online but as a general rule a lot of very large sizes are easier to find online).  http://www.joann.com/boye-single-point-aluminum-knitting-needles-10in-size-17/8216194.html
