The hidden oil patterns on bowling lanes

84655 ratings | 6676130 views
Every bowling lane has a hidden oil pattern. In this episode of Vox Almanac, Phil Edwards finds out what that means. Follow Phil Edwards and Vox Almanac on Facebook for more: https://www.facebook.com/philedwardsinc1/ Every lane has a pattern. In this episode of Vox Almanac, Phil Edwards explores how they change the game. Bowling isn’t just about a great ball and good form — if you want to understand the sport, you have to understand the lane. Every bowling lane, including the one in your neighborhood alley, is coated with an oil pattern to protect the wood. But these patterns aren’t just for protection — the way in which oil is applied to the lane can affect the speed and direction of your ball. These patterns are so important that recreational bowlers and professional bowlers bowl on vastly different patterns — the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) even classifies the patterns it uses in tournaments. Phil Edwards met with professional bowler Parker Bohn III at his childhood bowling alley, Howell Lanes in Howell, New Jersey. He guided Phli through the complex strategy a pro bowler uses when encountering different oil patterns. Not only do they have to assess which pattern is in use, but they also have to judge how that pattern changes as the oil shifts and slides over the day. Knowing how to play a specific lane can be the difference between a title and second place. But these patterns aren’t just for the pros — they’re relevant to recreational bowlers as well. Watch the video to see how you can use these patterns to step up your game. I always avoided spinning the ball because I thought it would make it nearly impossible for a righty to hit the dreaded ten pin. Guess I'll have to try.

Why the bowling lanes feel empty
Great video! Love that you used such an experienced bowler to explain this. Much respect for PB3, and I think the rest of the competitive bowling community can agree with me!

Maybe they lay oil just to make the game harder? It's a game that theoretically could be played by a simple robot.

So what you’re saying is... we should have oil wrestling matches on bowling lanes...

So is it reasonable to ask for a oil pattern? Are lanes typically oiled daily? So if i want to aim for a personal best, should i go in the AM?

It was my classmates birthday party during 5th grade. I was destroying my classmates in bowling. I knew that I had to get at least 7 pins to win. On the last play, I accidentally took one step too many. I slipped right on the oil. I rolled a gutter ball and lost. From there, I learned that there was oil one a bowling lane.

I am sorry if I sound rude but wearing bowling shoes on the lane will mess up the shoes because of the oil, even if you wear them down lane where there is typically no oil.

Not to mention the difference between left and right hand bowlers... synthetic vs. wood, etc. Poor video.
Anthony Putzell (1 month ago)
For the millionth time...It is not "spin". I't is "lift". You never want to try to "spin" the ball. You want to "roll" the ball and let the ball do the work. Good work on the explanation of oil patterns, poor job on how to actually work them.

im surprised American people haven't stolen the oil yet.
Those lanes have so much oil I'm surprised the US hasn't staged a military coup to profit off of it. Oh wait...

I'm sorry but no one in the right mind tells there parents at a young age.. I want to be a professional bowler.

Used to work in a bowling alley as the guy that maintained the machines and the lanes. The house oil pattern in this video was most common for every day bowling near the weekends (kids birthday parties, college kids on a saturday night, etc). However around the middle of the week there were league bowlers that usually requested special oil patterns (heavy on the right and decreasing to none on the left, or it would be heavy in the middle and thinning out to the sides, a "Christmas tree" pattern, etc). That pattern changed every day and the lanes would get stripped twice per week. Sometimes a new oil pattern covers an old oil pattern if the lanes were not stripped of the oil. If I remember right, lanes got stripped Monday and Thursday at the alley I worked. Other days new oil was just placed on old oil. If the oil patterns are important to you, you may want to find out which ones they do each day, what days have league bowlers, and when the lanes get stripped. However, most of the time my boss told me not to tell people what the oil pattern was (but to this day, not sure why he told me that) Oh, and one day I was stripping the lanes and a screw got trapped underneath and put a deep groove in lane 6 that it seemed nobody noticed. Nobody said anything but you may want to look for things like that because I sure didn't say anything.

i dont even bowl why am i watching this
To everybody who is too lazy to watch the video, I'm going to sum this up: There is oil on the wood in the alley. The more oil, the more the ball "skids" on the surface with little friction. Professional bowlers curve the ball so the ball "skids" on the oil, but when it hits the wood with little/no oil, it will roll towards the pins.
