From Rehab to a Body Bag | Dying for Treatment: VICE Reports (Full Length)

7225 ratings | 1015442 views
In the United States, more people between the ages of 25 and 64 die of complications from drugs than car crashes. According to a 2009 study published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 23.5 million people in this country over the age of 12 need treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, and only 2.6 million of these afflicted individuals actually receive it. In response, drug and alcohol rehab has blossomed in the past three decades into a $35 billion industry with nearly 15,000 facilities across the country. Although non-hospital residential treatment serves only about 10 percent of those in recovery in the US, the exorbitant cost of such care--as high as $75,000 a month--has made it extremely lucrative. And thanks to popular TV shows like Celebrity Rehab, which have installed the luxurious rehabilitation center in the popular consciousness, the national enrollment figures keep growing. VICE editor Wilbert L. Cooper traveled to Southern California, the region with the highest concentration of these high-end rehab clinics, to explore the peculiar and troubling side of the for-profit addiction treatment industry. The treatment available for addiction of any type is ridiculous. It's like using an ice pick through the eye to preform a frontal labotamy at an anger management class....they are outdated and to close minded to acknowledge or even consider they have been treating the problem wrong the entire time.....and the federal and state governments do not want addiction to end or be curable....they make to much money off of it.

This is the difference between the US and the rest of the world, everything in the US is for profit and business, there are no individuals who are not in it for the money.

You can have the best doctors, best rehab, best support group, best sponsorship, but in the end and after all is said and learned it lies in the hands of the individual. You have no power when it comes to someone's elses life. All you can save is yourself.

Malibu... I'm just up the 1 from those rich fucks lol a part of me doesn't feel bad for the rich fools that fall for expensive "equestrian rehab" lol or a glorified vacation in a beach house. Of course, when an addict dies it sucks, because I think about what could've happened if I didn't own up. I used to be addicted to oxy and I quit using, I went to a cheap methadone clinic along with NA meetings and counseling... that didn't involve arts and crafts or horses or batchiball (whatever that is). No frills are needed to get clean

"So this is our fruit orchard. Seventy trees, all organic." "Uh, yeah, thanks Rich. Last night I obtained a gram of sandy brownish grey powder of dubious origin and - with a stranger's promise that it was Heroin - cooked it with puddle water on the bottom of a dirty old Coke can I found in a the dumpster I slept in the night before, pulled the whole mess through a used tar and nicotine laden cigarette butt as a filter into my bent up, month old, dull hypodermic. I then, after 45 minutes of digging around with the dull needle with my pants down in an alley looking for my femoral vein, shot that dastardly concoction directly into my bloodstream through my crotch. But _THANK _*_GOD_* I won't have to suffer the sheer horror of eating a non-organic apple. As you can see by the track marks on my arms, my leg accesses and the open, weeping sores on the shaft of my dick, I really care about my body. It's a temple, you see." Most addicts treat their bodies like a chemical dump. I know I did. Is a Whirlpool spa and an sauna and some organic fruit going to reverse the 20 years of abuse I did? Oh great! I'm so glad I found you guys! So that's 30,000 a night, yes? Can I give you my Blockbuster Card or my Club Z points? Methadone for life is the best option for some. People like me have the option of Meth or Death. I'll take the free state-sponsored addiction over a pine box any day. I've been an opiate addict for over twenty years. On Methadone for about a decade or more. Soon I'll have been on legal opioids longer than diverted or illicit ones. It's a victory in my eyes. I'm able to function, have a job and contribute to society. Without Methadone I'm society's worst nightmare. It costs ten cents for any dose of Methadone in my province. But for a pharmacist to watch you drink it? Fifteen dollars, please! More money, please! Here's your synthetic narcotic in tang. Oh thanks bartender, make it a double, will you? Just be a good boy and get your carries. Then you only need to come in for supervised ingestion once a week or once a month fir the really lucky ones. I don't want 3 grams of Methadone hanging around in my house so I opted for weekly.
Price Bayliss (21 days ago)
I was on opiates for 13 years. Here is what i did. Flushed them down the toliet and hung on for 2 weeks.. Over a year and never looked back. It takes guts and intestinal fortitude.. And prayer.. Not a goofy 12 step broken program..
Ike Reedy (21 days ago)
I guess the best thing to do is not do DrUgZ....
Jack O'Jack (21 days ago)
3 times 4 times, I know people who've been to rehab 14 times, it's not that the program sucks, it's because you're not ready sometimes and you should keep your good habits when you get out of rehab. sobriety isn't a sprint, it's a marathon.
Jack O'Jack (21 days ago)
It's free in France, you just need your money for cigarettes, the rest is anonymous and free, you can go there and tell them that your name is Donald Duck and that you have a drug problem, they can keep you for a year, and the fact that it's free will make you think twice before acting like a douche, you're not a customer, you're a patient, it was worth it for me, sports twice a week, art therapy, writing therapy, dance therapy, theater therapy, if you break down and feel low, there's always someone there who you can talk with, there's group therapy every day, you have your designated shrink that you see twice a week, your own bedroom, the food was good, I became a sports junky after six months, that's what I compulsed in, and all of that was *FREE* and *ANONYMOUS* , if you're American, the plane ticket to France is nothing compared to a year of rehab in the south of France, you'd be amazed to find out how easy it is to get in, three phone calls and they give you a date.
I like dr drew! He’s honest some of us struggle with Money

Rehab is a complete fraud. Those with the means to own the business benefit by recycling the resident as much as possible. I worked as a Chef in one on Long Island. The Medicaid fraud is rampant it subsidizes a lavish lifestyle for the owners. 12 STEP PROGRAM guarantees failure as it labels the practitioner an "addict" for life. We are what we tell ourselves we are.
Anthony Knight (24 days ago)
What a scam good racket for the owners though.

I was a junkie for a few years, I woke up one day and realised that Heroin wasn't the end all and be all for my ADHD. I just stopped, which to be honest, was HARD! But 24 years later, I am not regretting it at all. Though it has cost my body quite a bit. I have stuffed kidneys and hopefully this year I will get a new kidney. I am on dialysis 3 days a week, for 5 1/2 hrs a go. Everybody I knew, mostly didn't survive the 90's. None but me are alive (that I know of) today. This place would have driven me insane. I found work to be the best thing. I took myself to where Heroin and other drugs were very scarce. I must admit that up until 2001 I still smoked ciggarettes and pot. I am clean of everything today. Meth, speed, cocaine didn't work on me as it just counteracted my ADHD.

This is the dumbest shit I've ever heard in my life. Look wheather you pay a million or $1.50 if someone's not ready to quit they're not going to quit. Likely OD. If you are willing to quit it should suck you should have to suffer, remembering the terrible is an amazing deterrent. Over 3 years clean. I pray for, love and believe in all of us addicts in recovery or still trying.

Rehab is a ripoff lol. At least druggies get to get high. In rehab your broke and only get to talk about getting high. As long as rehab is for profit. People won't get help just more and more rehab.

Having been to 400-500+ state funded (in MASSACHUSETTS- the most PROGRESSIVE/foreword) state in USA 🇺🇸 after California, none have helped me find a new way to LIVE!! All detoxes simply give meds, lecture groups with statistics & then discharge you to another 6-12 months of CSS/TSS “HOLDINGS”, only to wait for a sh*tty “social model, DPH STATE funded, halfway house”?! Where peers (Who, COULD BECOME FRIENDS, but instead, do not, due to social model/therapeutic community being “Rat each other her out for brownie points” for ones own selves freedoms”!!!! F**k MASS HEALTH! F**k the “TC” prison side, rat out/call out a so-called potential Figure long term “friend”, only to pull away the one opportunity this person has to reintegrate with their young child?? Only so the rat can get a “more trusted standing” with staff!! F**k public state funded detoxes. State (in MASs, USA 🇺🇸), does not even GIVE rehab (after detox) Treatment, aside from 14 day prison-style lock ups!! My evidence: I have been to all but 1 of 70+ MA state DPH funded detoxes/“rehabs”. Did not remain sober (alcohol as drug of choice”), from not ONE OF THEM! Stop slamming the bette, holistic rehabs for those who are financially better off!

I turned 30 just last month I've been struggling with opiates 11 years now. I get sober and relapse over and over. I have never been able to afford rich people rehab. I once went to this horrible place called teen challenge when I was 19 was one of those Bible thumping if you don't convert and believe in our religion you'll never get sober bullshit places. I left that place after 19 days. After that either I've gone to jail and did involuntary sobriety ( ended up in prison for 5 years Arizona and yes I found and used dope locked up on occasion too) I honestly am out of hope. I relapsed right before my birthday after 21 months of sobriety. I still don't understand after all the horrible shit I've experienced and lived, how am I still this stupid that I still relapse. All the dope sickness depression anxiety losing friends and family I still go back to it. I feel like I'm simply broken and nothing will ever work or help

My advice to Cliffside Maibu, never agree to another interview about your drug treatment program. Cliffside Malibu is a glorified bed and breakfast.
