From Rehab to a Body Bag | Dying for Treatment: VICE Reports (Full Length)

7024 ratings | 986221 views
In the United States, more people between the ages of 25 and 64 die of complications from drugs than car crashes. According to a 2009 study published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 23.5 million people in this country over the age of 12 need treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, and only 2.6 million of these afflicted individuals actually receive it. In response, drug and alcohol rehab has blossomed in the past three decades into a $35 billion industry with nearly 15,000 facilities across the country. Although non-hospital residential treatment serves only about 10 percent of those in recovery in the US, the exorbitant cost of such care--as high as $75,000 a month--has made it extremely lucrative. And thanks to popular TV shows like Celebrity Rehab, which have installed the luxurious rehabilitation center in the popular consciousness, the national enrollment figures keep growing. VICE editor Wilbert L. Cooper traveled to Southern California, the region with the highest concentration of these high-end rehab clinics, to explore the peculiar and troubling side of the for-profit addiction treatment industry. Thank you for including someone with an eating disorder in this, people don’t realise that it can be as much of an addiction as a street drug.

David Zanny (4 days ago)
My advice to Cliffside Maibu, never agree to another interview about your drug treatment program. Cliffside Malibu is a glorified bed and breakfast. The owner/founder sounded like a moron, who feeds off of other wealthy morons. These types of places are an epidemic and should be investigated for corruption.

You cant bitch and moan because one form of treatment or another isnt available to poor people/middle class people. When you grow up in the U.S.A., you are constantly having it hammered into you the dangers of drug/alcohol addiction. If you know your broke ass can barely afford the drugs, much less the rehab, then its on you if you gamble with your life and go out and fuck around with that poison. The opiates doctors are giving, 30 years ago, addiction to them might have snuck up on you because not alot of people knew the dangers of pharmaceutical grade opiates. But now, im sorry. No sympathy at all for people that choose to take that risk and expirement, despite being warned at school, warned at church, warned at home, warned on television, warned online, and warned by the healthcare community at large about just how deadly this shit is. Its an indictment on people as a whole, that when we choose to do these things and get ourselves into a world of shit, that we turn right around and try to convince ourselves and others that we are a victim. No motherfucker. Making the decision to self-medicate with oxycodone(harming yourself and knowing its dangers) for 10 years then, realizing youre an addict, and then saying or being told "addiction is a disease", is like drinking a fucking gallon of lye, and when you get sick and near death saying "i have a disease" ***Wait and see. Constant victimhood and entitlement is going to sink the fucking ship before long. Now, i gotta go take my 140mgs of methadone. Peace.
J.J. Sutton (6 days ago)
Actually bro, weve been trying to understand addiction WAY before prohibition/alcoholism. In the 1800's people had "Veterans Disease" or "Veterans Syndrome". Which was morphine addiction, brought on from use of morphine for treatment of an injury sustained while fighting the Civil War. And also, quiet tragically, when the heroin molecule was isolated from morphine, it was thought that it would cure you from morphine addiction. And i guess, from a certain point of view, it did "cure" people of morphine addiction- by giving them a heroin addiction. Which is probably 10,000 times worse lol- not exaggerating.

It's really easy to get clean after the initial detox. Just work out all day. it will make you feel good and keep you from thinking about drugs
Logan Stroganoff (7 days ago)
Malibu treatment guy was fucking spun himself and couldn't answer simple questions such as where his fucking patients are! I'll tell ya where they are: Out scoring dope that he will probably "confiscate" and use himself! Jesus what a charlatan...

tried and tested solution.. dont get into drugs or alcohol.. at all..
Brie Girlll (10 days ago)
Dr. Drew and the guy promoting his rehab center are wrong about some things. A rich person has more resources for rehab than a poor person, no doubt. There are not enough inpatient rehab facilities for the poor or middle class that don’t have adequate insurance. Outpatient treatment is not the best option for many hardcore alcoholics or addicts. Many people using drugs or alcohol do so due to emotional pain or trauma or mental health issues. Passing out meds to reduce the symptoms of withdrawal are appropriate. There is no fool proof method of curing addiction. You can detox a person medically but that is different from helping their mental and emotional issues.
Jessica Robinson (12 days ago)
12 step non profit recovery is where it’s at. It’s not glamorous but it works! I went to treatment almost 7 years ago, worked my ass off to stay clean and I am still clean. The exclusive treatment centers are crap and they learn no real skills to stay clean. It’s sad!

what a fucking DOUCHE!!! HOLY HORSE SHIT!! edit: which one you ask?? ALL of these clinic "specialists/owners" EVERY one of them are solely in it for the almighty dollar. So sad. I went to a pretty low level rehab and 30 days later I've been clean 10 years. Because I was finally AWAY from the drug for a decent amount of time and because I WANTED sobriety. These jackasses piss me off you dont NEED a million dollar a month facility to get clean and they can't even convince themselves.
Shanna Kahl (25 days ago)
People are so desperate for a quick fix to achieve sobriety. Swatting at a poor horse with a swimming noodle isn't the answer. Recovery takes alot of work and maintenance. There's no pill or happy horse shit therapy techniques to achieve sobriety. My worst day clean beats the days I spent homless and addicted. It took multiple detox, rehab, jail , and halfway houses to understand this is and will be a life long walk in recovery. It started with me wanting to be clean no matter what!

Chris McCreary (1 month ago)
He asked him where his clients who live there are at the moment and he had no idea. Even the other assistant whom he asked where they are they had no answer. Lol. These are the people you're supposed to be treating and keeping an eye on as they progress through drug recovery and make sure they are not doing drugs, and you don't even know where they are… That's absolutely insane They are probably down on the street corner buying drugs and living the life of luxury in your nice facility. What a joke of a treatment center overpriced and they care nothing about your recovery because if you come back, that's just another hundred grand in their pocket Also it would blow my mind to know that insurance actually covers these kinds of places. And then we wonder why our insurance rates are so high to get a basic medication that cost $40 covered
Chris McCreary (1 month ago)
He also talks to the journalist like "why are you bothering me with these petty questions". That guy is kind of how I view people in malibu orange county, beverly hills types --how they act that way out there anyways. A bunch of stuck up snobby assholes...

5:08 he walks into the kitchen where they are trying to get all of his food prepared and just says "guys" and then gives them a death look like they need to shut the hell up or he's going to send them back to wherever they came from… What an asshole. And I think he's more full of crap than any 12 step program

Depression had really got an iron-fisted hold on me and had succeeded in doing so for the last 3 years. I felt very weak and insecure - I didn’t feel like a true man. After adhering to this depression therapy “fetching kafon press” (Google it), it did not only help me to take control of my life once more, it also helped me shed 44 pounds!.

Wtf?"where are your patients right now?" ,"oh , they're emmmm they ah .... they're u know em.... doing some therapeutic type...... ahhh ....emm". Seriously dude? &$73,000 for a room that if it were a hotel room id be cancelling my booking it was tiny&looked grubby. Must be some bed fr$73000 .I'm in disbelief that this place is still open &wtf was all that crap with the pony &pool noodle? Yeah that'll help with withdrawal. Only in America folks.

When you are an addict you fall prey to mental, sexual and physical abuse but more sadly you fall victim to opportunistic rehabs...Not all are bad but it just another reason why being addicted to drugs is a lose-lose...you lose control over your life and are at the mercy of others...that usually doesn't end well...
Jennifer Rojas (1 month ago)
Rehab is over rated. Its deadly even.
Aundrea Kym (1 month ago)
This seems like propaganda because of the way it was edited and cut to give a certain impression to the viewer. It's obvious what the film maker's perspective of the Malibu treatment center is and I guess I was looking for more of an objective type documentary that allows the viewer to form their own opinion instead of suggesting my opinion for me.
ipsurvivor (1 month ago)
If you have a son who’s addicted and your his dad you’d be better off taking him to a hotel with enough meds to wean him off and handcuffing yourselves together until it’s over. Give him a choice of which hand he wants free to wipe with and he can’t go out and score. I believe the future (if we take the right course) will involve micro dosing so that legit pain patients and addicts alike will have doses tailored to them and not forcing their bodies to conform to the meds whether they are titrating on or off the medication. REMEMBER: Opioids still save millions of lives in the United States compared to a relatively low number of ODs in comparison to all the successful surgeries that are not possible without opioids... Most people don’t get addicted after surgery... Though I think that a follow up nurse should stop by after surgery to take any unused meds... No need for “Rainy Day” meds for those who are not in pain.

Reading American Fix by Ryan Hampton - turned me on to this mess.Typical $$$$$$addiction. Sad-diction. How to get rich on someone else's misery. One may ask a simple innocent question. Why cannot the solution to this problem be free, available, competent and straight up?Because the ones in need of help don't count, don't matter. All that really matters is figuring out how to "grow" the $35 Billion industry in order to replace all the good jobs that were exported to other countries. And there it is.

If you are a *heavy* alcoholic you need Valium and medical supervision to safely detox. I feel bad for serious addicts who get trapped trying some fancy rehabs that do not have trained medical staff on board... The phycological stuff is a lifetime of work the physical stuff needs to be addressed immediately. Fucking scam's just milking peoples money... Vampires...that is a horrible way to die also...

This is so wild to me. Cliffside Malibu and places like it are a crock of shit. But that being said, there are places that ARE helpful. Do your research and honestly, trust patient reviews. I work in a treatment center and yes, it’s not for everyone. But I’m in recovery myself and I know my intentions are to try and help. Nobody’s a dollar sign to me, personally. And some of the staff I work with are in recovery too and absolutely feel the same way as I do. But it can totally be dark sided and fucked up when people become dollar signs. Again do your research when seeking treatment and know that AA/NA, celebrate recovery and other methods are virtually free.

I stil feel like shit that some Interventionalists conned my mom into spending 75,000 for the last rehab i went to which i found out later. They talked her into it by saying i was going to die if she didnt do this and said ur buying him a new life, adding that if people could buy or start over a new life that it would cost millions.Saying i would come out talking, walking different, being more respectful and all kinds of bullshit saying i was going to learn how to live life in a different way to where they wouldn't believe their eyes i changed so much.Plus i would be clean and sober and this would all be over. She caught me using a couple months later and she told me what she spent and she was under the impression if i went that everything would be as if not a worry in the world and us as a happy family i got so pissed i wanted to kill them but sfter seeing my mom as if she was so hurt that got me clean not the rehab, meetings, advice nothing my own self did it so my mom wouldn't feel as if it was her fault
