From Rehab to a Body Bag | Dying for Treatment: VICE Reports (Full Length)

6743 ratings | 953448 views
In the United States, more people between the ages of 25 and 64 die of complications from drugs than car crashes. According to a 2009 study published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 23.5 million people in this country over the age of 12 need treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, and only 2.6 million of these afflicted individuals actually receive it. In response, drug and alcohol rehab has blossomed in the past three decades into a $35 billion industry with nearly 15,000 facilities across the country. Although non-hospital residential treatment serves only about 10 percent of those in recovery in the US, the exorbitant cost of such care--as high as $75,000 a month--has made it extremely lucrative. And thanks to popular TV shows like Celebrity Rehab, which have installed the luxurious rehabilitation center in the popular consciousness, the national enrollment figures keep growing. VICE editor Wilbert L. Cooper traveled to Southern California, the region with the highest concentration of these high-end rehab clinics, to explore the peculiar and troubling side of the for-profit addiction treatment industry. Where are your patients today? "...I don't know, where are they..? Wherever they went there's, uh, umm.., hmmm, a therapeutic meaning behind it..." This was like a cokey SNL sketch.

Rehabs can work or they dont. If the person wants to stop then they will if they dont then they wont. That simple, been a heroin addict for 9 years and I stopped because I went through enough pain and had enough. It's all up to the individual and how bad they want it.

In 95% cases, rehab never works, never.... Do it by yourself at home with proper medication and time or have methadone or buprenorphine if you can afford. Rehab centers, even good centers, are a complete lost of money.

Rehabs are a joke. I’ve been to good and bad ones. And all they care about is $$$ period. The only way you escape is if you really and truly want to be clean that’s it. I’ve been clean just over 7 years and I finally did it in my own cold turkey. Fuck rehabs they’re just Scams for $$$

I got clean from smoking pot for 6 year I spent 600$ a week on weed ever time I would relapse I would just cry now I'm four years clean. some would say pot isn't a drug but anything that make you have a evil attitude or not want to eat unless you have a couple of joints is a drug to me.

It's sad we still live in a society were in 2018 the only medical solution to addiction we are taught is "god" being an addict and user of almost every drug out there I can honestly tell u the only true way to get sober is to improve your quality of life and grow the fuck up.

Makes sense why us addicts tend to believe in god (I don’t). Look at how lucky one has to be not to end up in a carnivorous rehab, then end up in an endless cycle of rehab stints... till fatal overdose (opiates, I’m talking). I get so much survivors guilt when I think of all my dead friends and acquaintances. They deserved better help.
Monk Killedababy (21 days ago)
As a recovered heroin addict, I absolutely hate the show Intervention and how it represents us addicts, also the way they represent rehab. It’s 90% fiction and it’s hurting; not helping.
Hermosa Reina (20 days ago)

They should clean horse shit, not enjoy time with the horses... It's like giving a heroin addict, a nice place to stay, loads of money, and a Grade A pure Colombian Coke and Asian Heroin. This place is for hipsters, not drug addicts.

Kickback Pfft, Judge Conover in Davison was part owner of a program called Nupaths. It was a work release program. In fact several judges owned the building . Same idea as the c-sucking judges sending juveniles to camps and getting kickbacks. M-F'rs should have their nuts cut off and shoved down their mouth.

How can you open a business treating desperate or at risk people without actually being qualified it for it? There needs to be at least some form of regulation, otherwise it's nothing more than a scam and pure marketing...

JESUS CHRIST what a joke, let’s play with a noodle and lounge out. It’s pathetic if I would have been pampered in rehab why would I ever want to get off heroin? I would have just kept using if I had that money. And oh when I’m tired of it I get a vacation? Lool
blastman8888 (26 days ago)
No wonder so many fucking people standing on the corner holding up a sign begging for money. There is no rehab program for regular people in America. I have asked doctors if they can recommend someone they have nothing for my family who needs it. I called one place they took our insurance called back said all we needed was to pay the educable I asked what about the out of network only pays 50% they were like don't worry about that we take care of that. When I asked about coming down there to meet with them they said it doesn't work like that you just sign all the paper work over the internet they just take you in. I got the feeling this rehab was all about money not rehab.

Ex junkie here, in my personal experience rehabs are good for getting you 30 days clean, and thinking relatively straight, but jail is better. For me it all came down to self control, and for that you need motivation.
Zinaagent009 (28 days ago)
They needed a more aggressive vice interviewer. All he did was shake his head in agreement when the rehab owner was talking a bunch of B.S. he didn’t have much to say until he was in the car alone. The owner acted like he needs rehab 😹

Funny. I got Sober because I did it in a practical way. Not a place so awesome that when i come home I realize ugh back to life and the cycle starts again. I like it when I am in a setting that helps me at home NOT in a stress free environment
Candice Evans (1 month ago)
I worked in two rehab facilities. Some of the staff treated clients like prisoners. Who is gonna believe you if you leave treatment and blame it on abusive staff? They kinda got ya... And it can be a money grab. Not saying all rehabs are but in some instances they certainly take advantage of a vulnerable group whose families are desperate for their "help." People heal from addictions because they are motivated to change and are ready to face their pain in a new way. The answer is not necessarily rehab... I would say more often than not it isn't. Rehab can be a toxic place to be and is not a cure all. No one monitors how they treat the clients, and it is a serious problem.

faith based God centered free facilities are located all over the country. I'm a recovering addict myself, 4 years clean, took me a prison sentence and state funded rehabilitation program. but currently work with faith based program and I'm a true believer that God is the only answer to cure addiction and you must surrender to God to be healed but it is possible.  starla corpus Christi texas

watch em actually give em drugs this is more like a comedy show had me cracking up in every scene 😂
The best way for me was to do it cold turkey from the highest dose of methadone i could get on i was in the worse pain etc that lasted almost 2 months had a heart attack and i was 24 years old the support of my family also greatly helped no rehab forcing nothing if you have the will you can do it i prayed and i found god and he showed me a different way now im 4 years sober. Here are the steps i took 1: Leave downtown(or whereever you hangout with dope fiends/friends) 2: Find a stable enviorment with no drug use around. 3: Switched to methadone so i could get off needles until i reached 200mg of methadone 4: Prayed for the first time in my life and god showed me a different way and path to take But yeah this isen't for everyone i know but was just letting people know that's how i quit. Goodluck in recouvery all and god bless P.S. sorry english is not my first language or my second one.

Sober Way Home in Prescott Arizona doesn't sound like it's improved much since I went there in 2003. Stay away from it. I truly do believe they're making referrals back and forth with other treatment centers to make money. When I was at Sober Way, there were three actively using heroin, Klonopin, Vicadon, and whatever else in some mixture. I don't know drugs, being an alcoholic is bad enough, but that's where I learned more about drug use. I didn't use them but I got more of an education than I ever wanted. The house of females (there were six of us) were basically left to their own devices, all day long, concerning maintaining sobriety. Yeah, we were told to go to three AA meetings and had one weekly psychologist appointment per week. Those of us who went to AA and other required appointments had to lodge complaint, after complaint to get the non-compliant (and sometimes dangerous) substance users out. I left and went to another center but a Sober Way sure sucked the life out of my savings.

tbf, equine therapy isnt bogus when done properly, but when people like implement it wrong and dont take care of the horses properly and market it incorrectly...that's when things don't go properly. equine therapy has a place and it works when it's done right and this isnt the place for it at all.

It’s real simple you either want to quit or you don’t. It doesn’t matter how much the rehab facility cost if you don’t want to quit it won’t work. I spent 10 years addicted to opiates my late teens all through my 20’s. I have 4 years clean now with Suboxone and therapy. Suboxone isn’t perfect it’s an addictive substance itself but it’s the most effective solution I’ve tried so far.
