Christopher Poole (aka moot; founder of 4chan, Canvas) speaks about the value separating your online identity from your public identity at the 2011 Web 2.0 Conference. As Facebook and Google+ move toward ensuring that your online persona is always linked to your real name, does it alienate the audience for anonymity? Don't miss an upload! Very good talk, very good points. Maybe he should re-watch it now that he works for google+ and think about what has changed since the video.
Hamish Sandall (5 months ago)
I have come back to this video just to say, he was hired to work on google+ and after a month got moved to maps (according to his Linkedin). Now look what happened

Yes, Lord knows 4chan doesn’t degrade our humanity in any way whatsoever
ColasTeam (1 year ago)
It really doesn't, most boards are actually pretty useful and you learn to mentally filter-out the garbage.

everyone bashing Mr. Poole & this video looks incredibly stupid. If you don't have a constructive counter-thesis, sit down, shut up & take notes. This is a great talk.

ExertionDiver (6 years ago)
You are saying it as if exactly your interactions are important to them somehow. They're not. What's important to them is to get statistics. One's place there is but a grain of sand on a beach. Individual actions can be considered only if you doing something against the law or some powerful "player".
ExertionDiver (6 years ago)
I don't really understand what he is implying to do with identity system except that aggregation of identity is bad. There is three sides as I see it: 1) Circle of people to appeal to (facets as he said). 2) "Informational abuse". 3) Sincerity. Strict identification promotes conformism but reliably protects from abuse. Vague one promotes sincerity with a circle and protects a bit from abuse. Anonymity promotes non-conformism but very prone to abuse. Every one of them is useful in a way.
Big Brother (6 years ago)
He's just exploiting that system to cut down on spam. He never said it isn't useful for him to do it, just that it sets a structure inside internet culture about how we view identity and what he talked about.
madichelp0 (6 years ago)

Right after this video, I clicked the box to comment. YouTube asked me for permission to display my real name instead of my username. This really drove home to me what was already a very powerful message in the video above, how many of you would be comfortable with everyone (friends, family, potential employers) knowing every single one of the comments you've made on not just YouTube, but every single forum everywhere. +1 for web anonymity.

Yuudachi (6 years ago)
Then again... Why would you need to put your real name as your name on it if your friends already know your name, they don't need to be reminded. You should be able to put your name as whatever you want, the whole point is that they are trying to force you to put your real name on the internet. Well I've rambled for long enough I'll stop. >.>
Yuudachi (6 years ago)
Oh and one more thing, how would it of become what it is without having you put your real name is irrelevant, it is a line that shouldn't be forced on people, it is a choice and should always be just a choice.
Yuudachi (6 years ago)
- keep Facebook to Facebook not expand into the rest of the web, why should it? because eventually you may not have choice of anonymity on the internet because that may become the standard. But to me again I just see it as a place for you to talk to people you know in real life so to have your name as your real name because you are known to them by your real name not a handle name but it's when it try to cross the line it shouldn't that is the problem.
Yuudachi (6 years ago)
- what they actually are trying to do with the Facebook comment box's on sites and Facebook interacting with other sites like registering with your Facebook account on other sites or you can connect your Facebook to other sites. I can see ''some'' people wouldn't mind all that but anonmity on the internet IS important may not be on Facebook but on different places of the internet it is and some places you want to keep private not share. That's the exact reason of the pitchforks, -
Yuudachi (6 years ago)
I use a handle on it(well to be precise its random, not handle I prefer to use and known by) >.>. Facebook to me is for friends to talk to friends they know in real life not random people on the internet so most people put their actual name as their name because of the fact it is a place where you communicate with your family/friends, so I don't really see the problem with Facebook itself as long as they keep Facebook to Facebook and not try and peek into people's actions/interests on the web -
