Touching Home in China: Making the Imagined Real

5 ratings | 920 views
Jennie — a teenager adopted from China — meets Jin Shan, a girl her age who grew up in Xixiashu Town. Jennie's adoption papers tell her she was abandoned here as a one-day old baby. Jennie talks about her expectations for returning to the town she was adopted from as her and Jin Shan interview each other and learn about their different experiences. This video is a storytelling element in the multimedia book "Touching Home in China: in search of missing girlhoods," which is also a web-based, cross-platform project about contemporary China. Maya and Jennie, who were orphanage crib neighbors in Changzhou, China, are its American narrators, as they return to the farming towns where each was abandoned as a newborn during China's one-child era. Friendships they make with girls their age who grew up in the towns where the adoptees were abandoned provide the American teens with clues about what growing up in rural China is like for girls. In their time together, the American and Chinese girls share insights about their childhood experiences.
