The Future Tire by Goodyear - IT'S SPHERICAL

64567 ratings | 9583996 views
Goodyear presented a vision of a future tire that looks radically different from tires today — it’s a sphere. Goodyear unveiled its latest concept tire, Eagle-360, at the Geneva International Motor Show. The spherical, 3-D printed tire highlights Goodyear’s vision for the future and presents an inspiring solution for the long-term future when autonomous driving is expected to be more mainstream. According to a recent study from Navigant Research, 85 million autonomous-capable vehicles are expected to be sold annually around the world by 2035, for example. According to the J.D. Power 2015 U.S. Tech Choice Study, consumers are most concerned with ensuring safety through technology in autonomous cars. I imagined something like this recently, I guess it wasn't as crazy as I thought since major companies are working on it. In my mind I pictured one large spherical tire in the center of the vehicle. The car body would be more like a square or torus shaped passenger hub where everyone sits around the wheel. The thing that has always annoyed me about the current design of cars and traffic is that it works best while moving forwards, but as soon as someone miscalculates a turn, tries to merge too early, or gets in some kind of jam, traffic needs to move backwards an everything comes to a halt, all because cars don't have lateral movement. It will take a lot of time to implement these technologies no matter what the design is, because the roads, homes and parking bays that exist now are all designed around the current car technology. One cityscape that always inspired me was in the movie Minority Report, where cars could move vertically along wall-roads, and also rotate on the spot to fit onto roads of different width.

How can it will be fixed in a car?
F B T Singh (10 days ago)
Oh I get it, the tyre has magnets inside it and it will be controlled by electromagnetic waves. So this means that by 2035 there will only be electric cars .
Jamie Maing (10 days ago)
Expensive to make, expensive to maintain (even if future forecasted), shape provides less contact (traction) with the ground compared to traditional tires, magnetic propulsion is high energy and object hazard in the case of accidents. Anything else? I hate to bust innovation but this idea doesn't make sense to me.

Cant you put the good things about the tread of this...thing. Into a normal tire? The sphere tire is literally the most stupidest and ugliest thing Ive seen in a while.

Cool concept. But I just don’t see any car manufacturer(s) making the commitment to put these on their vehicles sometime soon.

These gonna be expensive ass tires if they are made, wear sensors and other sensors plus more rubber and however they get held to the car not to mention they are gonna change a premium for new tech

They could put like 4 motors over each tire or ideally 4 on top and 4 under and each motor has a 2D roller in contact with the tire at all times and can fire in forward or reverse to spin the tire in any direction. youd probably need some sort of steer by wire system that knows exactly which outcome will happen before it even has to use the right motor to get it spinning in the direction intended. The same way most modern jets steer the pilot just tells the plane where to go and a computer adjusts all the flaps and rudders and everything to make the aircraft turn

Awesome innovation. Great video!👍 But how do we have suspension in this spherical tire? If this tire solves this problem it's really gonna do wonders.

More over it will have ha lesser contact patch than a normal tire... ideally it should have a point contact with surface whereas normal tires have line contact
mayank singh (3 months ago)
Where will u give the drive to these tires??? Some kind of drive shaft or stub axle has to be connected to it so that power can be given to the tires... and if a shaft is connected to this tire it will only rotate in 1 particular plane just like normal tires

ToniLivo (4 months ago)
That tire repositioning to save tire is so ridiculous. The reposition will always leeave a place thats already worn out in the intersection of the previous used surface with the new one. That leading to turbulences and once every revolution getting the chance to drift unintentionally. How can this company ignore such a simple fact? Its a no for me ty

What reliability of this wheel? When you said that this wheel does not connect with any type of mechanical parts . Its connected with magnetic so magnetic decreases this energy how to maintain this thing.

So instead of a renewable and reliable energy source, we are getting the reinvention of the wheel.
GlassDeviant (5 months ago)
This is a great idea as far as utilizing maglev tech without having to provide a special rail or surface on which to drive, but I am concerned about how road feedback will be affected. Part of the reason that I prefer unassisted steering and manual shift is that the alternatives place a barrier between the driver and the road. Also, the theoretical squeezing of parking lots will only be possible when vehicles that use this kind of revolutionary tire design, or something equally freeing as far as directional manoeuvering, becomes the overwhelming majority. Remember, electromagnetic suspension has been tried before (by Lexus, I believe) and it failed to make inroads into the market.

This concept won't work for a few reasons. First of all, how do you steer & get the car to turn with spherical wheels? Axles turn the wheel to a certain direction forcing the car to move in that direction. These tires float on magnets in all directions 360°, so the tire can't be directional. Not to mention that If their gonna have an advancement like that in magnetic control & power, then tires will be obsolete anyway. We'd be using hover technology. Then another problem is blowouts. These tires couldn't be changed on the side of the road with technology like that. You'd have to have a master's in physics & engineering to fix a flat. You see Goodyear's problem is that they HAVE TO DO THIS. Their whole company revolves around rubber tires & if they go, then they do as well. They can't invest in a technology that'll wipe them out (hover vehicles). They need to come up with something else though. Their trying WAY TOO HARD!!

The only problem is they make cars look wide, fat and really dumb. Look at how well the Pacer sold. I hope they don't bet their future on this ridiculous idea.
i think this idea is dumb firstly why use magnets overtime magnets usually get faulty and axles are a much more reliable option because axles are much cheaper and easy to replace but magnets?you mean like one of those monster magnet there so costly and axles last much longer
