DIY: Knit-Like Circle Scarf(Crochet Tutorial)

11802 ratings | 1693503 views
Hello hello, I'm sorry for posting this video during this time of the year. I know it's spring and silly to be wearing a knitted scarf, but I did not want to wait for another 5 months before uploading this hehe. I love this pattern so much because it really looks like it was knitted instead of being crochet. It is super simple as well so I have the faith that you'll be able to follow along with ease. I also want to mention that I am not a professional. I am just sharing a technique that has been passed on to me. I do not know the correct crochet terms because my momma first taught me how to crochet in Vietnamese. I am also not planning to learn the proper crochet terms any time soon. If this is something that bothers you, then please do not watch this video and refrain from leaving unnecessary comments. I want to keep a positive environment for those who appreciate my tutorials and are still able to gain some knowledge from them, despite my lack of professionalism. What I used: GRAY SCARF: 2 packs of Vanna White Lion Brand Yarn: Silver Heather - To figure out exactly how many yards I used, just google up the brand's info and you should have the calculations Boye Crochet Hook: G/6 - 4.25MM Black Scarf: 1 pack of Carson Simply Soft Yarn: Black Time: 30mins+ Size: 180 stitches x 11 rows I do not have a pattern for this. Thanks for watching. I hope you enjoy the tutorial. xoxo Tracey twitter: http://www.twitter.com/traceynguyen tumblr: http://www.traceynguyen.tumblr.com instagram: http://www.instagram.com/traceybeauty What I'm Wearing: top - Express shorts - Forever 21 nails - Wet n Wild "I need a Refresh-mint" and Sinful Colors White(Thin brush polish)

Thank you for this tutorial. It helped me to master the hdc foundation chain. I've used this pattern to make several unisex scarves, not cowls, for a worthy cause. I've made scarves using short rows or long row scarves with either front or back loops.
carolern77 (1 year ago)
Does anyone know if we're starting this scarf with half double crochet foundation stitch and I want to leave the scarf open and not make it an infinity do we use half double crochet stitch on last row?
carolern77 (1 year ago)
Tracy, thanks for video. A friend & myself want to make 50 scarves for kids that were in foster care, out of the foster system, have beaten the odds, and are going off to college without any family support system. This will make great unisex scarves in red for Valentine's day. If anyone is interested please check out the website www.fc2success.org

thank you so much ^^ i made two scarfs and now want to make my third, but would it work with fur yarn?

I am desperately seeking a hooded cowl tutorial... that actually works. I was hoping Tracy had one. help!#
Jeannie Lecure (2 years ago)
Some of you asked what needle size. For me, it's always easier to use needle size recommended on yarn packaging. Also, for any infinity scarf, I've learned it's not about how many chain stitches you start with, because that can vary by yarn weight/thickness. I just use my plastic tape measure and start with a 60" chain (or 1st row) for the length. This always makes a nice length, no matter the yarn. OR you can chain your 1st row then stop and wrap it around your neck as you would the finished product and adjust to make it longer or shorter to your liking. I've stopped counting stitches for good! :)
Liz (2 years ago)
What hook are you using? 6 or 4.50 ? You have both written on your explanation
Felicia Olivarez (2 years ago)
Hi there, I'm working on this scarf but I'm a little confused. It looks like you are working on the third loop of the half double crochet but in the slow motion version it looks like you worked into the front loop of the half double crochet. Which is the correct way??
bjoerni xd (2 years ago)
What crochet hook you use? I love your videos, sorry I come from Germany and I can not so good English
Kailey Schade (2 years ago)
By rows do you mean how long it is?
doris hamilton (2 years ago)
Kailey Schade it's the width of the infinity circle scarf beginning with row 1, 2, 3, 4. etc. until you reach the width say like from 1-15 rows, the length of the scarf is 180 stitches or you may want your scarf to be longer so you may use 250 stitches in length.

I just finished crocheting my scarf.. but it's not as long as I would like it.. do you know how I could lengthen it??

Mayleen Call (3 years ago)
Hey there, I am really...really new to crochet! I haven't even gotten my crochet needles yet. But, I was wondering...you said that you used 2 packs of the silver yarn? How do you join them together?
Emily Schoenborn (3 years ago)
+Mayleen Mincher You can join your skeins together by a simple knot, but be sure to weave the "tails" of the yarn throughout the scarf to hide them. Otherwise there's other ways of doing so.. This is just what I do because it's the easiest
Forgetmeena03 (3 years ago)
if I get an i hook instead of a g what does that do to the pattern? I am new to crocheting, but need an i hook for most of the things I want to make and don't want to buy two hooks. Can someone help me?
Forgetmeena03 (3 years ago)
thank you
theHookdude west (3 years ago)
you can use any hook size but remember an I hook will produce a larger stitch making the scarf a bit larger if you follow her pattern ... I made a scarf with an I hook & I was still happy with the way it turned out

Angela Pope (4 years ago)
when doing the foundation chain I yarned over the first loop before pulling the  yarn through the 3 loops on the hook. It made it easier to see where to put the hook through the work starting the next row. It seems twisted and very difficult to work the hook.
Cathy Contino (4 years ago)
Without your video my scarf would not exist. It came out great! Thank you!
mary retter (4 years ago)
Tracey YOU do a great job of explaining. Thank you so muhc for this tutorial mary from IOwa
Cathy Contino (4 years ago)
Thank you for posting. It has been a long time since I croceted regularly. I made slippers for my kids and myself when they were little. My oldest is 32 now!  So anyway I love your scarf but I cannot get the foundation half double crochet to work out for me. I am just going to go with making a long chain and putting half double crochets in it and hope for the best. One of your commenters said it looks like you have 180 hdc and 11 rows so I am going with that except I already chained 200. I bought the same yarn you suggested but I am using a larger hook because I seem to get a better result that way. Here goes nothing!
theHookdude west (4 years ago)
Great tutorial appreciate you doing this

THANK YOU soo much for uploading this video! I have been looking for Tunisian-inspired crochet pattern, and this is THE perfect pattern that I was looking for! =)
Zoey Faith (4 years ago)
Hi I have been following your instruction but just a question, for the last row of hdc, do we crochet normally or using the ribbing pattern?
SleepyJ L (4 years ago)
It is so difficult i can't follow ur instruction
Rachael Pizzo (4 years ago)
ok I'm having a problem, what size needle? I started with the g6/4.25mm (boye) and the stiches look really small. Also I am going into only one hoop of a stitch (which she says to do) and it's not showing the pattern on both sides just one. HELP please, Thanks
Portia Nichols (4 years ago)
For your second question, make sure you're going into the little bump under the two stitches we usually work in on top. Doing this pushes the top forward, creating the "v" the runs through the scarf. Hope that helps!
Portia Nichols (4 years ago)
She used a G but she definitely is a loose crocheter. This is why people say to check your gauge. Play with different sizes until you get the size you like (I'd try "I").
Hui-hong Lin (4 years ago)
After you use up the first bundle how do you connect the second bundle?
Rachael Pizzo (4 years ago)
I am left handed and am having so much trouble starting this, can anyone help me out please. Thanks!
Krystal Milan (4 years ago)
Going to spend Sunday trying this !
cretnotonic (4 years ago)
Is her first row considered a Single Crochet Foundation Chain? I tried to watch two other videos and it's so confusing. Hers is easier to follow and looks much the same as the others.
Kristin Daley (3 years ago)
To add to this: She is using the FDC because using that to start a project gives you a more stretchy, knit-like edge as opposed to the regular chain and then crocheting into that. ^_^
Kristin Daley (4 years ago)
Nope. What she is doing is foundation half-double crochet. :)
Genie P (4 years ago)

Hi, I would like to know what weight category the used wool had!!??
cretnotonic (4 years ago)
I always have this problem when I finish a scarf, the fist row/chair, is really stiff and the last row is very stretchy. So when I fold the scarf, it has a slight curve to it? Make sense? What's going on?
cretnotonic (4 years ago)
@Eva Levorová Thanks. Good Tip!
Eva Levorová (4 years ago)
@cretnotonic I also had this problem, what helps is to use a much wider hook for the first line (for example 12 instead of 7, which will be used for the rest of the scarf)
Rae Wynne (4 years ago)
probably the tension you are using as you are making the scarf- you are pulling tighter at the beginning and looser at the end. I hope that helps!
cretnotonic (4 years ago)
I forgot to say, I chain the length of my scarf first and then I join the two ends together

BBCara (4 years ago)
Hello. I absolutely love this concept. A few tips if I may... it would be great to learn the terminology for crocheting & include them in your video. Even for a beginner who is watching this is great. For example, this particular project you worked with a HDC (half double crochet)for the entire project. Because you worked it up & down(length) rather than side to side (width) like most do, after you did your chain 3 you wrap your yarn over on the hook & go in & pull through the first stitch. Then you have 3 loops on your hook, so you yarn over & pull through all 3 loops creating a HDC. At that point you would consider that your first row. From there you have stitch #1 from first row & stitch # 1 from second row. So if u lay your work on its side row 1 & 2 r facing up. So when beginning your next HDC you can describe it as, "begin your HDC by yarning over & go through previous stitch (or stitch #1 from row 2). It was a little confusing for just a second to me when you were describing the one chain on bottom & 2 on top. So basically the way that works is this, each stitch will have two strings which is what u described as the two on top. So for each stitch you have your front & back loop. You worked through the front loop. Also it would be great if at the beginning of the project you showed the size of crotch hook used as well as yarn type & size. I hope this helps. I have been crocheting since I was 5. I am 36 now & it took me up until a few years ago to learn the terminology. Back then it probly would have taken me hours to understand exact directions. I had to find the right youtube videos that explains the terminology & process. But other than that you are great at this! I'll b watching more of your videos. It's probly about time I started posting my work lol I'm not getting any younger! :) ♡
cece leone (4 years ago)
wait a second do u do the same stitch for the rest of the scarf as in the stitch i used second ?
Anna R (4 years ago)
It is "tunis crochet". Your shawls are awesome!
d k (4 years ago)
I really appreciate this tutorial! I've been looking for a scarf tutorial where I can follow easily, since I don't understand some of the crochet terms either. >.< Thank you so much for sharing :')
Artshealing (4 years ago)
Can you do this in the round? Tfs
Artshealing (4 years ago)
ok cool
Leslie Moreno (4 years ago)
Elizren you could absolutely do this in the round you can chain your desired length instead of doing the foundation change like she did  then join change together (make sure it is not twisted) then chain 2 and do a row of half double crochet join with slip stitch when you get back to beginning stitch of row then chain 2 and start next row of half double crochets going into one loop only hope this helped you. I prefer doing it this way also because then you do not have to sew together and have the seam .
Anastasia Smith (4 years ago)
I'm glad you learned in Vietnamese. I am just beginning to learn and I appreciate learning basic techniques without having to learn terms first. Thank you for your videos! :)

i loved your scarf so much! i want to do one so bad but i guess it's too much for a noob like me. every time i get to the "turn and go under the two loops" i fail. i just can't find them! and every time i tried it all turned into a big knot :( frustrationnns
MissPockybean (5 years ago)
this looks awesome! im gonna give this a go and gift it to my friend hehe ;)
amanda K (5 years ago)
It was extremely hard for me to pick up the two loops at the start of each new stitch. An easier way I found is: Start off with chain two, wrap around the hook, insert hook into the first stitch made, wrap the yarn around hook and pull through stitch. ***Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull through only the first loop on the hook***. Wrap the yarn around again then pull through all three loops on the hook. Continue for each new stitch in the remaining first row. ***This is the only part I changed from the original instructions.
Leslie Moreno (4 years ago)
Amanda by doing it the way you did at beginning you made a double crochet foundation chain instead  of a half double crochet foundation chain s on the rows after you should of done double crochets as well to match beginning but you can make this with any stitch type even a triple crochet and it would look awesome
1BUgirl5 (5 years ago)
You said you used two packs. How would you connect the yarns together? I'm a newb at this and I decided to make this my first project lol
Michaela Brooke (4 years ago)
I think you just tie the two ends
Destiny Pogue (5 years ago)
Hello! I was just wondering what the actual length of the scarf is before joining the ends. (like in inches not stitches) I am making this scarf but with yarn that is thicker so if I do the same amount of stitches my scarf will be longer. I really like how it sits on you so I want the exact same length of yours.
amanda K (5 years ago)
I just made the first row as loose as you want it around your neck. Trial and error
