How to Knit the Peony & Thyme Fisherman's Rib Scarf

675 ratings | 31795 views
How to Knit the Peony & Thyme Fisherman's Rib Scarf I was so thrilled to be asked by Lion Brand (one of my very favorite yarn companies!) to create a design with some of their yarn! They sent me some of their gorgeous New Basic 175 yarn, and I thought it would be perfect to use on a fisherman's rib scarf idea I'd been itching to try! I'm SO happy with how it turned out-a beautiful stitch plus color blocking and pom poms turned out to be a great combo! I hope you give the pattern a try, and would *love* it if you found me on Instagram and tagged me in your Peony & Thyme Fisherman's Rib scarf! -Anja Fisherman's Rib two-row sequence: (Don't forget that the very first row of your project will be the "setup row" where you knit across all stitches. After that, just repeat the two row sequence below.) Row 1 (wrong side): *Purl 1, Knit 1 into stitch below, repeat from * until 1 stitch remains. Purl 1. Row 2 (right side): Knit 1, *Knit 1, Knit 1 into stitch below, repeat from * until 2 stitches remain. Knit 2. Supplies used in this video: -Four skeins of Lion Brand New Basic 175 yarn. Tutorial scarf used two skeins of the color "Thyme", and two skeins of the color "Whisper". (Other scarf used as example [pink and cream scarf] used two skeins of the color "Peony" and two skeins of the color "Cream".) Find the yarn here: http://www.lionbrand.com/new-basic-175-yarn.html -US size 10 circular needles (You can use circular or straight needles. Pattern is not knit In the round.) -Perfect Pom Pom Maker -Tapestry needle -Pair of scissors Here are the links I mentioned in the video: Casting on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-YDQ1bP5TY Perfect Pom Maker Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kq8zJoOB5LA Casting Off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZdF1wKeFa4 Connect with me on: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/peonyandthyme/ Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/PeonyAndThyme?ref=profile_shopname Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/peonyandthyme/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/anjacj/peony-and-thyme/ Special thanks to Busy Bree Design for the beautiful "Rainy Daze" background art. Teach me the ways of your seamless colour changes! Seriously, the WS looks just as good as the RS, what sorcery is that?! Great video and amazing scarf(ves); thank you for taking the time.

There is a needle size chart on U-tube : "retroknittingsite", comparing US sizes with metric(mm)and UK sizes.
Sigrid Kutz (15 days ago)
Thank you, so easy to follow your instructions. I found a scarf and hat pattern in fisherman's rib, done by "Very Pink Knits". She is doing the hat in rounds, very nice. I like to make a set, scarf and a hat. A 10 US needle is a 6mm in metric , and a size 4 in UK terms. I found a chart that compares the different confusing sizes......yeah

I have watched this video at least 10 times trying to figure out how to do but to be fair I haven't knitted sense 6th grade which was 15 years ago

I just watched this video of URS and I'm thinking I'm going to make a scarf with that pattern u were doing for a friend I know in my area and she is really nice to me and my mom she is so sweet when we walk in the store of Safeway and I love the pom pom idea at the ends I'm going to do that
Mena Homberg (26 days ago)
I'm so excited to try this. I just ordered my yarn for it. I can't wait to make it.
Peony and Thyme (25 days ago)
Ahh! That is awesome! I hope you have so much fun making it!
Very nice video. Thanks for sharing. Instead of pompom(which I am not a fan of it on scarves but I love them on hats), I am going to do tassels which I love. I made lot of scarves with rib stitch. They look awesome. I love cables too. They are easy but you want to pay attention. If you make a mistake, you gotta go back all the way! Do you do sweaters? Can you please make a video of how to make some simple patterns? I am vegan. Its hard to find good sweaters that are not made of wool! Thanks once again.

Very nice and clear. The only part I am not sure of is at the colour change do you knit in pattern or just straight knit (like the setup roll) ??? Thanks
Peony and Thyme (1 month ago)
Desiree Rudolph Thanks so much for your kind words! And great question! For the color change, you continue knitting in pattern just like you have been.😊 I hope your scarf turns out wonderfully!😍
Peony and Thyme (1 month ago)
Desiree Rudolph Great question-thank you! For the color change, you continue to knit in the pattern.:) Thanks for your kind words!
Sajida Qudoos (1 month ago)
So, if we want 40 stitches, we'll take +3. Which means 43, right?
Sajida Qudoos, That's correct. But make sure you choose the no of stitches based on the thickness/bulkiness of the yarn. You can choose any type of yarn and normally instructions for a swatch will be written on the label. From that, you can choose the total no of cast on stitches. Hope it helps.

This is beautiful but...is anyone else having problems with some of the stitches coming undone? I'm finding these after I've already finished with a couple rows then I spot a big hole!
Peony and Thyme (1 month ago)
Monique Olguin Oh dear, that sounds frustrating! I’m sorry you’re having that problem! It sounds like you’re maybe accidentally dropping a stitch, which can be super easy to do with a more complicated stitch pattern like this.😫 Have you checked your stitch count? I hope you’re able to figure it out!💪🏻💕

I wish you had caption . I’m hard of hearing and deaf love your pattern in knitting. The colors are beautiful.❤️
Dolores Ungerleider (10 days ago)
Closed caption is a necessity for those who are hearing impaired.

Mary Ortiz Thank you so much for your kind words-that means a lot!💕 And thanks so much for the suggestion! That is super helpful feedback!💕

And your edges are so neat!! I've knitted two scarves and on the knit ends they are neat and straight but on the purl ends they are a bit wonky 😕
cloudydaez (1 month ago)
Where did you get your circular needles from?
Peony and Thyme (1 month ago)
I don’t actually remember where I got these needles-sorry! They were just done that I had hanging out in my knitting needle drawer that happened to be the right size! I usually get my needles just off Amazon, and Ciaogoo is my favorite brand.😍

Does a man wear a scarf with this pattern? How long should a man's scarf be?
Pam H (1 month ago)
Thank you!
Peony and Thyme (1 month ago)
Pam H I think that this stitch is great for everyone! And for length, that is really just dependent on personal preference! Whatever you like is great-no wrong answers!:)

Is it possible to knit this by using straight point needle?
Peony and Thyme (1 month ago)
Meiriana Chen Yes, absolutely! I only used circulars because I love them so much.😄 You can absolutely knit this using straight needles!💕
cloudydaez (4 months ago)
Also this is a very unforgiving stitch I don't really know how you could knit mindlessly unless you were doing garter or stocking stitch. If you lose concentration or drop a stitch you can't frog it because it can be a nightmare. Lovely texture with finished product if you can persevere but I don't think I'll be doing it again ☹️☹️
cloudydaez (4 months ago)
The Lion brand wool recommends a size 5.5mm knitting needle. Isn't a size 10 a much smaller needle? I thought the bigger the yarn (and this is a 10 ply) the bigger the needle. Would love to try this stitch as a scarf it really is very pretty.
Pam H (2 months ago)
I'm using size 8 and 4 ply. It looks good so far.

good video! instructions were very clear. i like to make the pom poms first because i'm not so good at guessing if i have enough left over from the scarf (ask me how i know '-> ). i would have liked more information/ review of the yarn. what it is made of, yardage, what you did or didn't like about it, etc.
Peony and Thyme (7 months ago)
Oh my gosh, sorry about this incredibly delayed response! Yikes! Making the pom poms beforehand is a brilliant idea! I'm so glad you suggested it-why didn't I think of that?! Haha! And thanks so much for the suggestion about more yarn info-that is awesome feedback!! Thanks SO much for watching and for your kind words!! Happy you found our little community here! :)

Perfectly clear and easy to understand! The scarves look so lovely and cozy, the color blends are so warm and charming. This is an awesome design! I think I am going to knit both, and with the respective colors you chose for each. :)
