How to Knit the Peony & Thyme Fisherman's Rib Scarf

1847 ratings | 89150 views
How to Knit the Peony & Thyme Fisherman's Rib Scarf I was so thrilled to be asked by Lion Brand (one of my very favorite yarn companies!) to create a design with some of their yarn! They sent me some of their gorgeous New Basic 175 yarn, and I thought it would be perfect to use on a fisherman's rib scarf idea I'd been itching to try! I'm SO happy with how it turned out-a beautiful stitch plus color blocking and pom poms turned out to be a great combo! I hope you give the pattern a try, and would *love* it if you found me on Instagram and tagged me in your Peony & Thyme Fisherman's Rib scarf! -Anja Fisherman's Rib two-row sequence: (Don't forget that the very first row of your project will be the "setup row" where you knit across all stitches. After that, just repeat the two row sequence below.) Row 1 (wrong side): *Purl 1, Knit 1 into stitch below, repeat from * until 1 stitch remains. Purl 1. Row 2 (right side): Knit 1, *Knit 1, Knit 1 into stitch below, repeat from * until 2 stitches remain. Knit 2. Supplies used in this video: Find the supplies here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/peonyandthyme?listId=3IXC1CWQ7MXVH&ref=idea_share_inf (This is a link to my Amazon Influencer page and I do make a little money off it:) ) -Four skeins of Lion Brand New Basic 175 yarn. Tutorial scarf used two skeins of the color "Thyme", and two skeins of the color "Whisper". (Other scarf used as example [pink and cream scarf] used two skeins of the color "Peony" and two skeins of the color "Cream".) -US size 10 circular needles (You can use circular or straight needles. Pattern is not knit In the round.) -Perfect Pom Pom Maker -Tapestry needle -Pair of scissors Here are the links I mentioned in the video: Casting on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-YDQ1bP5TY Perfect Pom Maker Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kq8zJoOB5LA Casting Off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZdF1wKeFa4 Connect with me on: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/peonyandthyme/ Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/PeonyAndThyme?ref=profile_shopname Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/peonyandthyme/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/anjacj/peony-and-thyme/ Special thanks to Busy Bree Design for the beautiful "Rainy Daze" background art. I wanted to know that too ...my sides came out all wonky. She never replied.

Great pattern! How long are the green sections in inches?! I noticed in the video it says the grey is around 28’ so I’m wondering if it’s the same for the green sections. Thanks!

Love the pattern & the Colors you put together. I am sure going to try this pattern & love the added touch with the pom poms!

Aw, thanks so much!!:) I hope you enjoy the project as much as I did!:)

i will be looking for a crochet version of the stitch as crochet is sooo much faster. thanks for the cute idea
susan wingblade (2 months ago)
I love your scarf and the pattern. Isn't there supposed to be one row, in fisherman's knit, that has purl stitches in it. You purl into the back of the stitch? I was ronly wondering because other videos did that for this stitch. Personally, I think your pattern is far easier and I love it.
Mena Homberg (2 months ago)
How did you wash your scarf? I washed mine in the washing machine on the delicate cycle and it held up really well but my pom poms fell apart even though the yarn said that it was machine wash safe.

Okay my Walmart (only thing that's close) only carries size 9 and size 11 needles so I got the 9 because the 11s were very short. Are there any adjustments to make when using 9mm needles?

I love this pattern so much. Very good tutorial. I would like to knit another things and I wonder, how can I increase and decrease this pattern. Thank you

I would like to see the full scarf on you. It looks beautiful.

Can U plz mention me the width of the scarf??
Ashley Flynn (4 months ago)
I noticed that your one caption said 'switching between right and left-handed knitting', but you were still working with the same needle (the right needle), and just holding the yarn on your other hand. That's not left-handed knitting, it's continental style (easier for those who started out crocheting, usually, like me. haha).
Judy Donnelly (4 months ago)
Look for the three dots on the top right hand corner.......clic on them, you will see the word caption, clic on it.
Cubby Levi (3 months ago)
Judy Donnelly I just tried that for the first time and there they were! The words!

Hi, can you please tell me exactly or approximately how long it took you to knit the whole scarf without the pom poms. 😊 good work and thank you for the written instructions!

I love the length of this scarf. Could you tell me how long it is?

+Peony and Thyme Anja, thank you so much for your speedy response. I hope you are blessed with more projects from yarn companies.
Peony and Thyme (4 months ago)
I made these 68 1/2 inches long, but you can make them any length you like!💕
Kim Sanborn (4 months ago)
Love the scarf and video! I know it was made a year ago but can I suggest making the pom poms first. This way there is no guessing when it comes to how much yarn to save. You made it look very easy.

Alexandra Abraham (5 months ago)
I'm confused. You purl on one side, ('wrong' side) but knit/knit one below on the 2nd row ('right' side) ... Other patterns rib both sides (knit/purl) ... I tried knitting it the way you do, and frankly, I must have messed up... after 4 go's I gave up... what's going wrong?? You really speed up too quickly... I personally need more time to see what you're doing, because I'm obviously not following!

There is a needle size chart on U-tube : "retroknittingsite", comparing US sizes with metric(mm)and UK sizes.
Sigrid Kutz (5 months ago)
Thank you, so easy to follow your instructions. I found a scarf and hat pattern in fisherman's rib, done by "Very Pink Knits". She is doing the hat in rounds, very nice. I like to make a set, scarf and a hat. A 10 US needle is a 6mm in metric , and a size 4 in UK terms. I found a chart that compares the different confusing sizes......yeah

I just watched this video of URS and I'm thinking I'm going to make a scarf with that pattern u were doing for a friend I know in my area and she is really nice to me and my mom she is so sweet when we walk in the store of Safeway and I love the pom pom idea at the ends I'm going to do that
Mena Homberg (6 months ago)
I'm so excited to try this. I just ordered my yarn for it. I can't wait to make it.
Peony and Thyme (6 months ago)
Ahh! That is awesome! I hope you have so much fun making it!
Very nice video. Thanks for sharing. Instead of pompom(which I am not a fan of it on scarves but I love them on hats), I am going to do tassels which I love. I made lot of scarves with rib stitch. They look awesome. I love cables too. They are easy but you want to pay attention. If you make a mistake, you gotta go back all the way! Do you do sweaters? Can you please make a video of how to make some simple patterns? I am vegan. Its hard to find good sweaters that are not made of wool! Thanks once again.
Rosemary Bruce (2 months ago)
there’s lots of acrylic sweaters available. i’m vegan top & really want to knit & crochet more clothes but cotton yarn is so pricy & never very chunky (i prefer bulky yarns) and acrylic yarn isn’t very environmentally friendly :(
LifeHappened ** (4 months ago)
If you are Vegan then you do crochet with thread.
Desiree Rudolph (6 months ago)
Very nice and clear. The only part I am not sure of is at the colour change do you knit in pattern or just straight knit (like the setup roll) ??? Thanks
Peony and Thyme (6 months ago)
Desiree Rudolph Thanks so much for your kind words! And great question! For the color change, you continue knitting in pattern just like you have been.😊 I hope your scarf turns out wonderfully!😍
Peony and Thyme (6 months ago)
Desiree Rudolph Great question-thank you! For the color change, you continue to knit in the pattern.:) Thanks for your kind words!
Sajida Qudoos (6 months ago)
So, if we want 40 stitches, we'll take +3. Which means 43, right?
Sajida Qudoos, That's correct. But make sure you choose the no of stitches based on the thickness/bulkiness of the yarn. You can choose any type of yarn and normally instructions for a swatch will be written on the label. From that, you can choose the total no of cast on stitches. Hope it helps.

This is beautiful but...is anyone else having problems with some of the stitches coming undone? I'm finding these after I've already finished with a couple rows then I spot a big hole!
Peony and Thyme (6 months ago)
Monique Olguin Oh dear, that sounds frustrating! I’m sorry you’re having that problem! It sounds like you’re maybe accidentally dropping a stitch, which can be super easy to do with a more complicated stitch pattern like this.😫 Have you checked your stitch count? I hope you’re able to figure it out!💪🏻💕

One of the multitude answered, “Teacher, I brought to you my son, who has a mute spirit; and wherever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth, and wastes away. I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they weren’t able.” He answered him, “Unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to me.” They brought him to him, and when he saw him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground, wallowing and foaming at the mouth. He asked his father, “How long has it been since this has come to him?” He said, “From childhood. Often it has cast him both into the fire and into the water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us, and help us.” Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out with tears, “I believe. Help my unbelief!” When Jesus saw that a multitude came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to him, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again!” Having cried out, and convulsed greatly, it came out of him. The boy became like one dead; so much that most of them said, “He is dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand, and raised him up; and he arose. When he had come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we cast it out?” He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing, except by prayer and fasting.” Mark 9:17‭-‬29 WEB https://bible.com/bible/206/mrk.9.17-29 web

And your edges are so neat!! I've knitted two scarves and on the knit ends they are neat and straight but on the purl ends they are a bit wonky 😕

Where did you get your circular needles from?
cloudydaez (4 days ago)
Peony and Thyme I found the circulars on eBay they are from Addi a German brand and they are the best 😊
LifeHappened ** (4 months ago)
In US, it's available in Joanne's.
Peony and Thyme (6 months ago)
I don’t actually remember where I got these needles-sorry! They were just done that I had hanging out in my knitting needle drawer that happened to be the right size! I usually get my needles just off Amazon, and Ciaogoo is my favorite brand.😍

Peony and Thyme (6 months ago)
Meiriana Chen Yes, absolutely! I only used circulars because I love them so much.😄 You can absolutely knit this using straight needles!💕
cloudydaez (9 months ago)
Also this is a very unforgiving stitch I don't really know how you could knit mindlessly unless you were doing garter or stocking stitch. If you lose concentration or drop a stitch you can't frog it because it can be a nightmare. Lovely texture with finished product if you can persevere but I don't think I'll be doing it again ☹️☹️
cloudydaez (9 months ago)
The Lion brand wool recommends a size 5.5mm knitting needle. Isn't a size 10 a much smaller needle? I thought the bigger the yarn (and this is a 10 ply) the bigger the needle. Would love to try this stitch as a scarf it really is very pretty.
Pam H (7 months ago)
I'm using size 8 and 4 ply. It looks good so far.

good video! instructions were very clear. i like to make the pom poms first because i'm not so good at guessing if i have enough left over from the scarf (ask me how i know '-> ). i would have liked more information/ review of the yarn. what it is made of, yardage, what you did or didn't like about it, etc.
Peony and Thyme (1 year ago)
Oh my gosh, sorry about this incredibly delayed response! Yikes! Making the pom poms beforehand is a brilliant idea! I'm so glad you suggested it-why didn't I think of that?! Haha!
