Personal branding is pretty essential when you're a graphic designer or illustrator, especially after graduation. This means creating a logo, building a website, and growing your social media. After graduation from illustration or graphic design you need to make an impact online and get people's attention, both with your work and your personality. If you do a good job at it, and grow yourself a decent little brand, then it can give you an extra little bit of experience that the competition might not have! – This video is sponsored by .SPACE domain names. If you want a fun URL for your portfolio website then you can get one at a discounted price of $3.99 by following the link below and using offer code: DESIGNYOURSPACE https://get.space/?coupon=DESIGNYOURSPACE&utm_source=CLewis_YT&utm_medium=Vid_Prime&utm_campaign=CLewis_YT1_April2017 – // MUSIC // The Halfway Kid - 'Peach Room' https://soundcloud.com/halfwaykid – // LINKS // https://www.twitter.com/ceklewis https://www.instagram.com/ceklewis/ http://www.charlie-lewis.com

I never understood why you need a website
Gail Armstrong (5 months ago)
I’m about to spring clean my business which has moved more into illustration now and need to change my branding. Your video was a great start and gave me some new ideas. Thanks Charlie.

Hey, where do I begin if I want to be a graphic designer? I have studied the theory but I can't create proper designs. Also, how do I connect to other designers?
Charlie Lewis (8 months ago)
Your work is gonna look bad for a while to begin with. Just keep going and your skills will match your theory. As for meeting designers. Try behance, dribbble, instagram

Thank you. Very helpful.

How did you start to learn drawing and illustration? your illustrations are really looking awesome I really like to learn that style.
Charlie Lewis (8 months ago)
It’s a mixture of drawing from a young age (this is not needed) and also just copying better illustrators when i was just starting out. Eventually you create your own style, but first, copy!
Why do you advise to name your brand your own name?
Charlie Lewis how do you like: “Whale Graphics”
Charlie Lewis (9 months ago)
It’s just easier. Maybe don’t if you have a very long name.
TheCoffeeAddictedWriter (10 months ago)
You will be lecturing all your YouTube content and then some to young, eager minds someday soon, Charlie. You have the gift of captivating select masses.
dominique007 (10 months ago)
I definitely see a distinctive style throughout all of your logos and work. Nice vid.

Loving your content! I'm going into my third year feeling really unconfident. Watching this was helpful.
Charlie Lewis (1 year ago)
Don't worry about confidence, that comes with experience and time. Just work hard.

Do you think portfolio sites like Behance and/or ArtStation are a good substitute than a personal website?
Charlie Lewis (1 year ago)
They're good to have as a bonus. But no, you need a real website. It costs a little bit of money. But it's 100% necessary.
Laura Evans (1 year ago)
hello! I am a end year graphic design and illustration student! :) I'm starting to send my portfolio out and trying to make a website from it currently but got alot left to do over there! I tend to use instagram the best, @lauraevansillustration
Charlie Lewis (1 year ago)
Looks awesome! I like that you use captions. I think it adds a lot of personality. Just try and keep the website simple. It just needs to be clear and easily updateable.
Khadijah Abdul-Nabi (1 year ago)
Your videos are truly helpful and inspirational. I'm learning graphic design on my own so it's great to see another Designer forge their own path as well.
Charlie Lewis (1 year ago)
Yes, well done! Love hearing from people who don't make excuses and just go for it. Good luck!

Hi Charlie Lewis!!! I am a graphic design student and this video had great information since I plan to graduate next spring semester. I was wondering how to use Instagram as a tool for some of my work but I don't know where to start. I decided to have a consistent theme of abstract pieces and prints as a starting point.
Chioma U. (1 year ago)
Charlie Lewis Thank you so much for the tips I will research some more and apply them. My phone kinda sucks though lol
Charlie Lewis (1 year ago)
Ok, i have 3 tips. 1- do some research on how to use hashtags in your posts. This will help you grow. 2- write a lot in the captions. Talk about your process. Your thoughts. Why you like the picture. It helps add personality. 3- keep a regular schedule. Like every 3 days or, if you're hardcore, every day.
Anilu (1 year ago)
How do you practice the "communication" aspect of graphic design without being in an environment where you "learn" how to talk about your work to potential clients(like in school)?
Charlie Lewis (1 year ago)
You learn how to talk about your work simply by watching other people talk about their work. I'm gonna do a video with some useful resources. But one easy example to check out is the adobe live videos. Search it on youtube. They get designers on there to work on a two day project and talk about their process as they go. Also they do portfolio presentations etc. And books! Read design books.
Revan (1 year ago)
Your illustrations are surreal and awesome looking. Hope to see more of those, maybe you can talk more about the process too. Cheers.
Charlie Lewis (1 year ago)
Sure i will at some point do not worry. Thanks so much for watching ✌🏼
Sharis Miranda (1 year ago)
Are we going to ignore the fact that he has had 1000 different looks in less than a year, and actually looks good with every single one? (loved the video)
Charlie Lewis (1 year ago)
Haha thanks, i get bored quickly

Peter Buckley (1 year ago)
Hi I can't afford all the adobe creative app. I have just purchased a MacBook Pro do you think I could do really awesome designs within Inkscape and gimp
Peter Buckley (1 year ago)
If i inbox you can you tell me how to pirate it please
Charlie Lewis (1 year ago)
I'm not saying pirate it ... but that is what i did for the majority of my life
PalmParadise (1 year ago)
Check out Affinity Designer / Photo, they cost around $40 each and are a much better alternative to Adobe products than the ones you mentioned.

What's up Charlie! Super frustrated, but I have submitted two portfolios for college admission and both have been denied. Working on the third one and was wondering if you have any advice/tips to make my portfolio better. Loving your videos btw. Keep posting!
Michael Lataquin (1 year ago)
Thank you for the words Charlie! And congratulations on your milestone! Your going to be great!
Charlie Lewis (1 year ago)
I got rejected twice from the same college before i realised it wasnt right for me. Try some other places. In the end, the course doesn't matter, it's what you make it.
jshearing (1 year ago)
Great video! I just finished foundation and put a website together really quickly, it'd be great if you could check it out and give me some feedback: https://jackshearing.com. Also, I really think you should show more of your illustration on your website. Its a part of who you are and there really good. Have a good day!
Charlie Lewis (1 year ago)
Stuff looks great. Cool to see you're clearly self motivated by getting ahead of the curve with the website. Thats the key. Think whats gonna be coming up and do it before anyone else thinks to.
Bikaruz (1 year ago)
Dude! I'm really liking these type of videos, keep them coming! I'm currently building a website and putting together a portfolio and your videos remind me that there's many out there going through something similar... Cheers!
Charlie Lewis (1 year ago)
Nice, good luck with the website. It can be really fun, i think. Portfolio takes a bit longer but it's worth it!
Marietta Mifsud (1 year ago)
I am currently building my website, and this video is perfect timing. I am a full time designer, however I would like to transition into illustration. it's a tough task, but will get there. Great video and great tips, thanks for doing this!
Marietta Mifsud (1 year ago)
Charlie Lewis thank you for your honest answer. I always felt like illustration is what i wanted to do in life, I do enjoy it more than graphic design, however for me its very hard to know where to start from, and making my illustration more for commercial purposes. What I don't like about graphic design is that since I started working I am not finding the projecrs all that interesting, and most of the times clients are hard to work with. I live in Malta, a small country and maybe people are not that open minded when it comes to design and try to' hold your hand' when designing material for them. I am hoping that my move to the Uk in the coming August will be different and hopefully I get hired by a company that works on interesting projects more often than not. Thanks for your help and for the content you provide.
Charlie Lewis (1 year ago)
Glad it was some help for you Marietta 🙂
