+groovypoodle  If you're using SASS or LESS I'm thinking along the lines of  @import(.tombstone) with .tombstone being a class with code similar to +blenderpanzi's suggestion

Maybe something like: copy-of-selector-suspected-dead:after { width:0; height:0; content: url(tombstone.gif?tag=2014-10-31-some-id); }
