Coding With Python :: Learn API Basics to Grab Data with Python

19:23
Coding With Python :: Learn API Basics to Grab Data with Python This is a basic introduction to using APIs. APIs are the "glue" that keep a lot of web applications running and thriving. Without APIs much of the internet services you love might not even exist! APIs are easy way to connect with other websites & web services to use their data to make your site or application even better. This simple tutorial gives you the basics of how you can access this data and use it. If you want to know if a website has an api, just search "Facebook API" or "Twitter API" or "Foursquare API" on google. Some APIs are easy to use (like Locu's API which we use in this video) some are more complicated (Facebook's API is more complicated than Locu's). More about APIs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Api Code from the video: http://pastebin.com/tFeFvbXp If you want to learn more about using APIs with Django, learn at http://CodingForEntrepreneurs.com for just $25/month. We apply what we learn here into a Django web application in the GeoLocator project. The Try Django Tutorial Series is designed to help you get used to using Django in building a basic landing page (also known as splash page or MVP landing page) so you can collect data from potential users. Collecting this data will prove as verification (or validation) that your project is worth building. Furthermore, we also show you how to implement a Paypal Button so you can also accept payments. Django is awesome and very simple to get started. Step-by-step tutorials are to help you understand the workflow, get you started doing something real, then it is our goal to have you asking questions... "Why did I do X?" or "How would I do Y?" These are questions you wouldn't know to ask otherwise. Questions, after all, lead to answers. Should I Learn Python or Ruby or PHP?

02:33
Should I learn Python or Ruby or PHP? Programmers put more energy into debating that question than any student every did Spanish versus German versus French. Spanish is more useful, while French makes you sound romantic. All three languages are object oriented and dynamic. The only caveat is that PHP only became object oriented over time, while Python and Ruby were created as such. An IEEE survey found that Python was the most popular language at 11%. PHP essentially tied it with 7%, while Ruby was a mere 4%. And other garnered 29%, the greatest by far. OK, so polling the pros doesn't answer the question. Everyone has their favorite programming language, and they'll all advocate for it. Ruby is a big name because it is popular in Silicon Valley. Ruby is popular with startups because programmers can use a lot of built in tools to create look-a-like apps. They can slap together an app faster. Ruby is simpler to learn than PHP. Yeah, but PHP does better on the server side. And PHP is simple to deploy. Whereas Python has had to be retro-fitted to keep up with the modern era. It is still a solid programming language with lots of support resources. Ruby needs a framework to work at all; you can't just run the code on your server and have a working app. That's why they keep talking about Ruby on Rails. Ruby is the code while Rails is the framework. Python usually works faster than Ruby. And Python has the Django framework, which comes with a good toolkit. Python and Ruby I've heard are better designed than PHP. Which one is better? But PHP lets you create server side web-pages easily. PHP shifts a lot of its dependency issues onto Apache. PHP has more mature CMS frameworks to use, such as Wordpress and Drupal. I heard Ruby and Python are similar, but no one can give me a good reason to pick one over the other. All I know is that I don't want to work with PHP, since it is too clunky. Just pick a language and go. Odds are you'll have to learn JavaScript or C# anyway.

Intro to Web Development & the LAMP Stack

02:58
Glasses this time, but keep up the hard work, we're just getting started. When you type a web address in your browser it's asking a web server somewhere to send your browser a page to display. The webserver gets the request and is like yeah, ok Emma Watson pictures again!?... what a weirdo, but whatever, here is the page. A bunch of technologies work together on the server to make this happen, the stack. The most common stack is the LAMP stack, made up of four things, Linux is the operating system, Apache is the web server, mySQL is the database, and PHP is the server side programming language. You can stick other stuff in too, like Python or Ruby instead of PHP, Engine X instead of Apache, or MariaDB instead of mySQL, and tons more. If you buy server space for a site it's usually running a version of the LAMP stack. Let's go deep. A distribution of Linux is the operating system. Linux is stable, secure, free, and it's open source, meaning that anyone can download it and look at the source code, plus if you're a programmer you can contribute code back to it, like a bad ass. Apache is the web server. It listens for your page requests and then tells the server to run the necessary code, in this case PHP. That code runs and accesses or inputs any data it needs into the mySQL database and dynamically spits out a page of HTML, plus some other files which Apache sends back to you. Now you're thinking, what language should I learn? The answer? Fucking pick one and get to work! For the web, Ruby or Python are well written languages that help you learn to write good code. PHP is great too, in fact, it's the most popular language on the web. Facebook was written in PHP and open source CMS systems, like Wordpress and Drupal use it. If you kick ass with any of those, you'll always be able to find a job, unless you're a total asshole, and even then it might not matter. PHP gets made fun of for not being as elegant as other languages and being a bit quirky, but newer versions are better, and it's not going anywhere. Any good developer knows at least one language well with a peripheral knowledge of a few others, and is always learning. Once you master the basics of programming it's easier to pick up new languages too. Now, there's one more layer, the front end code like HTML, CSS, and Javascript. This code lives on your server too, in a directory usually called the webroot, along with the server side code. If your site is dynamic, the HTML gets generated on the fly, and any referenced CSS and Javascript, plus images, video or audio files get sent to your browser to become a web page. The look and feel of that web page is controlled by the front end code, the HTML, CSS and javascript which we'll talk about next, and things will start looking real good.

What Web Programming Language Should I Learn?

02:24
What web programming language should I learn? If you want to get into web programming, the first language to learn would be HTML. That's pretty basic. True, you could learn it in a long weekend. But if you master HTML5, you could get paid to update the millions of web pages in HTML4. Why does HTML5 matter? It is just HTML. HTML5 replaces the old website format with an HTML page and a CSS style sheet. And it will replace Adobe Flash and Silverlight plug-ins with a new element. That's a drastic change. And having Adobe Flash crash the web browsers of the fifty percent of users on cell phones is drastic, too. What about PHP and Python? JavaScript is one of the most popular languages for the client side webpages. It's used by Google and Facebook. And they are used by the NSA. On the back end, Python, PHP, Java and ASP.net are popular. ASP.net pretty much limits me to supporting websites on Microsoft Servers. That's a career dead end. Java is used darn near everywhere, so it is a good language to use. I could learn Ruby on Rails. Unless you are moving to Silicon Valley to work for a start-up, it isn't worth it. And you can't eat stock options, either. What about Scala? The only serious place that uses it is Twitter, and they make more noise than anything else. At least Python and PHP prepare you for work on websites and enterprise development. I don't know what good that is. The pay rate can be good. I was hoping for just one language to learn, the killer language so to speak. There is not one killer language, though Java can kill a lot of people's websites through security holes. You need to learn several, like Java, JavaScript and HTML to start. That's a long journey. Given the evolution of IT, it is rare to use a language that is as old is as the programmer using it. Get used to it.

It is difficult to get a job without experience and it is difficult to get experience without a job. In this video, I talk about how you can get started learning to program and then how you can actually land that first job. Today I thought I would answer one of the biggest questions that I get all the time. I get a lot of emails asking basically how do I get started in programming or how do I become a software developer. I thought I'd address that question this time. This is a tricky question. It's not easy to get started as a programmer or software developer. If you're already one you can probably recall when you first got started in your career how hard it might have been to break into the field especially this whole experience paradox which basically is if you don't have experience how do you get experience? How do you get a job without having a job? How do you get experience if you don't have a job? There is a way around this. There's a good way that you can actually get a job without having experience and to build up experience without a job. Now starting off, before we get into that let's talk about where to get started if you just don't even know where to start. You want to learn to be a programmer, you want to learn to write code, but you don't know where to get started. The best place to get started is to just look around to find some free resources online for learning to code. There's a bunch of different resources. I of course do videos for a company called PluralSight and that's not a free resource, but you can find online training videos for free as well as the ones on PluralSight which are not free, but are usually of higher quality than some of the free things, but you can find these resources online. Just do a search on tutorials for learning C# or learning Java and you're going to find that. That's the first place I would start. I would start by actually writing code. A big mistake that people do is they pick up a book on programming, they start reading through that book and they think they're going to learn how to code that way. No, the way you're going to learn how to code, the way you're going to learn how to program is to start doing it. That's why I say look for tutorial online because that's going to be more interactive. You're going to get started faster. You're going to be stepping through and doing what they're doing and learning that way. Now it's going to be very confusing at first, there's a lot of moving pieces, there's a lot of things to learn, but you just have to keep on plowing forward and keep on writing code. Like I said you're going to be ahead of a majority of people that are trying to get into the field especially relevant if you're already-let's say you're in QA, you're a software caster or something like that and you want to switch over to development, start writing code, get an application in the app store, build a web application even. Have a portfolio that you can show that you know how to write code and that you have the initiative to see a project through to its completion. Well, that's my advice for you. If you'd like to find out more advice like this definitely don't forget to subscribe to this YouTube channel but also check out my blog at simpleprogrammer.com and take care. Transparently Programming a graph database with an Object-Graph-Mapping API [linux.conf.au 2014]

25:56
The Py2neo package provides Python bindings for the Neo4j graph database. The most innovative and transparent way of accessing the graph using py2neo is using the Object-Graph-Mapping API. By using this model, your object model and graph model are the same thing. The speaker implemented a version of this API incorporating transactions and other extensions and will present the advantages of this API and how to use it to provide easy and transparent access to Neo4j graphs. For example, when a program issues a query, what comes back are not Neo4j graph nodes but real Python objects - constructed according by your constructor. This minimizes worrying about the database and lets the programmer concentrate on his object model. This API is implemented as part of the Assimilation Project - providing innovative integrated IT discovery and monitoring. Alan Robertson Alan is a long time Open Source developer - having founded and led the Linux-HA project (now called Pacemaker) for 10 years. More recently he founded the groundbreaking Assimilation Project - providing zero-network-footprint IT discovery integrated with extreme scale monitoring. Alan is a frequently requested speaker, speaking on graph databases, discovery, monitoring, high-availability and Linux at conferences all over the world. https://lca2014.linux.org.au/wiki/index.php?title=Miniconfs/Open_Programming#Transparently_Programming_a_graph_database_with_an_Object-Graph-Mapping_API

PYTHON in BLENDER TUTORIAL part 3 [GERMAN] (GRUNDLAGEN)

22:04
If Befehl Script: import bpy nameVar = 10 nameVar2 = 10 selObj = bpy.context.selected_objects[0] if selObj.name == "Wahr": selObj.name = "Falsch" elif selObj.name == "Falsch": selObj.name = "Wahr" else: selObj.name = "Wahr"
