'Affluenza' Teen Drunk Driver Sued By Victims

06:36
"A wealthy Texas teenager who got no jail time for killing four pedestrians while driving drunk still faces three civil lawsuits filed by victims' family members, NBC's Dallas affiliate reports. Many of those family members were outraged when 16-year-old Ethan Couch got probation after a psychologist testified he had "affluenza" — meaning he thought he was immune from punishment because he was rich. Couch's family may still be on the hook for millions in related civil litigation, though. (Unlike a criminal case, Couch can't be sentenced to jail or be found guilty. He could, however, be found liable and have to pay a monetary penalty.)"* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down. *Read more here from Erin Fuchs / Business Insider: http://www.businessinsider.com/ethan-couch-faces-five-civil-suits-2013-12 Download audio and video of the full two hour show on-demand + the members-only post game show by becoming a member at http://www.tytnetwork.com/member-options/. Chicago Drunk Driving Accident Lawyer

00:59
Chicago Drunk Driving Lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. http://www.daveabels.com/drunk-driving-accidents.html No driver should operate a vehicle after she has been drinking, but the unfortunate reality is that drunk driving incidents happen every week in Chicago. Some of these motorists are apprehended by police before they can do any permanent harm but in other scenarios, a drunk driver is not stopped until after a car accident takes place. Following a collision, victims may think that an official police investigation or criminal charges will serve their interests in the matter. But any fines or fees assessed by a criminal or traffic court will not go to benefit the victims of a collision who were hurt, even if they need that money to pay for their medical expenses. Instead, victims must seek their own relief through the use of a civil claim, and working with a personal injury attorney can help a victim through the process. From filing a claim to the resolution of the matter, it is a victim's right to work with an attorney she chooses. Drunk driving accidents often cause harm to innocent victims, whether they are inside the same vehicle as an intoxicated motorist, in another vehicle, walking nearby as a pedestrian, or even riding a bicycle. The harm can range from minor injuries to the loss of life and some of the damages may never be able to be righted regardless of the compensation that is available. If you were injured by a drunk driver in Illinois or if someone you love was killed, call the personal injury attorneys at Abels & Annes, P.C. today. We offer a case consultation without cost or obligation to all victims who call us and we have a licensed lawyer standing by 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Drunk driving crash victim hopes people won't drink and drive

03:22
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM NewsA drunk driver left Dani Simien, 25, paralyzed after crashing into his car six years ago.He wants people to stop drinking and driving, especially those celebrating during the July 4th holiday.Since the third grade, I wanted to be a firefighter, but that's not going to happen anymore, he said.Simien says he just dropped off his prom date in 2006 when a drunk driver struck his car on Highway 69 in Port Arthur, starting a chain reaction of events. When we hit, it was a head-on collision, and my car spun back into traffic and a car behind me hit me on the driver side and spun me back around, and I think actually the second time I was hit on the driver's side, I think that's how I broke my spine and it was broken in half, Simien said. The 25-year-old broke both ankles, both knees, both thigh bones, his spine, six left ribs and damaged his kidneys, lungs, liver and heart in the wreck. He also had a severe brain injury. Doctors werent sure if he would live. Despite the odds against him, hes still alive. He credits that to God.I feel like Im just another soldier trying to do good and tell my story and help other people, he said.Simien partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, M.A.D.D., to share his story in hopes that people will learn from what happened to him. What I'm doing now, speaking, it's still like I'm saving lives even though I'm not running into burning buildings, talking to people telling my story because I don't want nobody to live my life, Simien said.

Drink driving teen who killed four is spared jail 'because he's rich': Judge lets 'spoiled' boy facing 20 years off with probation after lawyers blame his wealthy parents *Ethan Couch, 16, of Keller, Texas, had faced 20 years behind bars but walked away with 10 years probation Tuesday *Youth pastor Brian Jennings; mother and daughter Hollie and Shelby Boyles; and 24-year-old Breanna Mitchell all died in the June 15 accident *A psychologist called by the defense blamed the teen's behavior on his parents, claiming they gave him 'freedoms no young person should have' *State District Judge Jean Boyd agreed and said she didn't think he could get adequate therapy in jail A judge has let off a 16-year-old boy who killed four people while driving drunk after the teen's lawyers claimed his rich parents spoiled him and never taught him about consequences. Ethan Couch of Keller, Texas, had faced 20 years behind bars but walked away with 10 years of probation Tuesday, something that angered his victims' families. 'Money always seems to keep (Couch) out of trouble,' Eric Boyles, whose wife and daughter were killed in the June 15 crash, told the Star Telegram after sentencing. DUI Checkpoint app to prevent drunk driving! NO DUI! NO DUI!

01:02
Website http://www.mrcheckpoint.com gains support from Mothers Against Drunk Drivers and local police departments for helping to prevent drunk driving. Its done by publicizing police presence at DUI checkpoints and giving subscribers ways to get around safer and cheaper than before. Follow me on Instagram: http://instagram.com/mrcheckpoint_ checkpoint locations updated first on there! Mission -- The primary Mission of MrCheckpoint is to deter drunk driving and promote public safety by publicizing DUI checkpoints, DUI statistics, speed traps, police activity, and changes in DUI awareness campaigns. Method -- In order actually help prevent drunk driving on the roads the first step is to reach the right audience. An organization as well known as Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) who helps countless victims of drunk driving doesn't necessarily identify with the right demographic when trying to make a difference on the road. MrCheckpoint prides itself in identifying and targeting the right demographic being twenty-one to thirty-five year olds, which make up majority of arrests and accidents relating to DUI. MrCheckpoint's free texting service sends ad supported SMS text messages in real-time to users who subscribe and opt-in to receive this services. Users receive DUI checkpoint updates, speed trap alerts, as well discounts to local sponsors. MrCheckpoint is proud to have sent over One Million text messages since the launch in August of 2012. Motivation -- DUI checkpoints are conducted for two main reasons; education and publication. 1. The DUI checkpoint becomes educational when the driver and passengers receive a post card sized fact-sheet that shows the danger, cost, and high risk to drunk driving. 2. Publicizing DUI checkpoints is what makes people think twice about drunk driving when already out and about. Authorities released that DUI arrests, accidents, and fatalities are reduced by 20% when a DUI checkpoint is publicized well. This is called the deterrent effect. A common misconception is that DUI checkpoints are conducted to catch drunk drivers. The reality is that DUI checkpoints only identify .45% of DUI drivers who go through DUI checkpoints. When officers want to arrest drunk drivers they perform DUI saturation patrols which yield a 14% arrest rate. http://www.mrcheckpoint.com

Family of bus driver killed in drunk driving wreck makes public plea

02:06
San Benito Consolidated Independent School District bus drivers honk their horns as they pass the spot where their colleague Juan Espinoza died last week along FM 732. The gesture of love can be heard from a makeshift memorial where Juan's mother Minerva Espinoza and sister Oralia Elorza are gathered around it to grieve. "I want him back," Oralia said. The 38-year-old was killed on February 22nd when his motorcycle was hit head on by another vehicle near Leal Elementary School.. Juan was on his way to work at the time. Police say the other driver, 21-year-old Felipe Sanchez, Jr., was drunk. "We need to get letters," Oralia said. "We need to petition. We need to bring up the sentence for drunk drivers. I mean when are they going to stop." The victim's family wants the suspect to receive the maximum punishment possible with no plea deal. They're asking for the public's help in the name of all victims of drunk driving. "I'm asking for letters," Oralia said. "I'm asking for [the public] you to email me so I can present them to the D.A. so he doesn't get a lesser [sentence]... I don't want him to get a plea bargain." It's a fear that only adds to their pain. Oralia knows her brother's smile will only live on in her memory. She wants his killer to live out as much of his life behind bars. "You have to pay," she said. The suspect was denied bond last week. Court records show Sanchez also had served six months in jail for deadly conduct and was out on probation at the time of his arrest for Espinoza's death. Authorities had filed a motion to revoke his probation back in January for violating the terms of his release, according to the records. If anyone would like to write a letter pushing for the maximum punishment in this case, can email the victim's family here: [email protected] Click here to join Ryan Wolf's Facebook Page Click here to follow Ryan Wolf on Twitter
Highway Sign in Memory of DUI Crash Victim - San Diego County Sheriff's Department

01:10
A sign is now up at the intersection of Mission Gorge Road and SR-125 North in Santee in memory of a woman killed by a drunk driver. The Sheriff's Department unveiled the sign with media present in January. The goal is to remind people not to drink and drive. On September 20, 2009, a 17-year-old girl decided to get behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated on alcohol and drugs. As she left a party in La Mesa, she struck a car, injuring that driver. The teen then left the scene of the crash and drove to Santee. When she came off SR-125 at more than 70 miles per hour, she struck the SUV of Pamela Sue Marabeas on Mission Gorge Road. The mangled SUV is now being used in Sheriff's Start Smart classes as a visual reminder of the deadly consequences of drunk driving. Since June 2010, free Start Smart classes have been regularly offered to new drivers and their parents/guardians so they clearly understand their responsibilities when a teen starts to drive. The class also clarifies the restrictions of a provisional license and social host rules in the county. For more information on a Start Smart class near you, visit sdsheriff.net/co_startsmart.html. Our thanks to Erin Limonchi, the daughter of Pamela Marabeas for speaking at the event and for graciously donating her mother's car to spread the message against drunk driving.
