The First Book of Fashion

Fashion conveys complex messages. The recreation of an outfit taken from one of an extraordinary series of Renaissance portraits reveals how one man made his mark on society. In 1530 Matthäus Schwarz, an accountant in the German city of Augsburg, was man in his prime: slim, smart and successful. In a portrait that shows him in an outfit made for the occasion of the Imperial Diet of Augsburg, he is every inch the fashionable man about town, ready to step out of his door and join the party. In the painting Schwarz wears a doublet made in panes of brilliant red and yellow silk over a shirt cut from fine linen. His slender calves are shown off in yellow leather hose and his knees are cross-gartered. On his feet are slim shoes and on his head is a flat black beret made in felted wool. At his waist are belts carrying the sword and red purse that complete the picture. Now an experimental project undertaken by Dr Ulinka Rublack, Reader in Early Modern History at the University of Cambridge, has brought this portrait alive in a historically accurate reconstruction of the outfit it depicts. The project reveals the role of dress in conveying complex social and political messages and the way in which fashion had a profound effect on mood and behaviour.

Italian fireplaces - a taste of Renaissance

Italy is the home of fashion -- clothes, shoes, accessories. It is no wonder that Italian fireplaces have become a trend fashion of their own. When you think of Italy and fireplaces, somehow the first thing that comes to your mind is Rome, emperor, Roman architectural style, etc. http://www.shopstonefireplaces.com/fireplaces-mantels-surrounds.html

Secrets of the Wallace: The Rapier in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries

05:04
David Edge, Head of Conservation at the Wallace Collection, is interviewed by Katie and Amethyst about the rapier swords of the Renaissance period; the sixteenth and seventeenth century must-have fashion accessory. Hi, I'm Katie and I've been working along with Amethyst, who has been interviewing David Edge, who is the Head of Conservation at the Wallace Collection. We will be interviewing him about rapiers, which were important swords in the sixteenth-century. What is the speciality of the rapier sword? What made it different from the other sword? The term rapier is quite of complicated one and its history is equally complicated. In general the rapier is a sword which has a long thin blade and is predominately used for fighting in a style where you would use the point, rather than the cut (though there are cut and thrust rapiers). This one is more of an Italian style rapier, with a point and a long, thin, straight blade. It was usually a civilian rather than a military weapon, though there were military rapiers to be had. When the sword was introduced in the Renaissance how did people learn the skills needed? It's a type of fighting that was very refined. The weapon was a social statement, so you couldn't own a rapier and show off your importance without knowing how to use it. You would be taught at a Fencing Academy by a master, who would show you the various different styles of using a rapier. There were lots of different academies, fencing schools and masters, and with any expertise, one set of experts were always ready to pour scorn on the other set of experts. In England we had George Silver, who disliked the Italian 'nimby-pimby' style, insisting instead that you should fight in the English manner. So different styles were developed and even manuals where written. Rapiers became very fashionable and cultured, all the noblemen would know how to use a sword, even from a very early age. For example, some of these rapiers were made for boys, I can't actually fit my hand in, showing it was made for a child. It was still as lethally sharp as the adult ones and the child would be taught from an early age how to ride and fence. What pieces of clothing or other weapons would need to be carried or worn with your sword? You would have a belt and hanger and the sword would hang here, quite low, so it would be very quick to draw (like in a western- quickly for your pistols). The longer the blade, the more fashionable it was in the Renaissance but you still had to be able to draw it from the scabbard, so the blade was limited by that distance. On the belt you would also have a left hand dagger. This was called a parrying dagger and often the decoration would match the rapier, if you bought it as a pair. You would fight with both, so you could engage with your opponent's blade, knock it aside in a parry and then go in with the dagger. Thank you We chose the rapier as we thought they were an important part of fashion in the Renaissance period. You can view the rapiers at the Wallace Collection and keep watching for the next podcast. Part of the 'Secrets of the Wallace' podcast series.

4 quick medieval hair do's ✛ medieval fair, clothing & music ღ

14:12
Last minute, quick and simple medieval hair do's for all unskilled medieval maiden's out there ;). They are also all designed for wearing long hair down so you can flaunt your medieval mane. Depending on what time period or culture you are reenacting, these may not be authentic. So if you want to be exact, check to see what styles were worn. I am doing viking reenactment, which allows me a bit more freedom (although there also were headcoverings for viking women, but they are not seen very often at fairs) The video starts with music and videos of the fair so feel free to skip to 8:21 for the hair do's or 2:17 to listen to medieval musicians. My hair: I started making YouTube Videos when my thigh length hair was falling out due to illness. So sadly you will rarely see it in the very best condition, always more or less thinned. But the important part is that this made me aware of many underlying health problems and gave me the chance to better my health (and eventually my hair). So as of now my health is doing good. Beige Magazine: Nik Thakkar -- 21st Century Renaissance Man

01:07
For the winter issue, Beige caught up with London and New York based multi-platform creative, Nik Thakkar who has worked with international design houses such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and Karl Lagerfeld. And, not stopping there, Thakkar is also the voice behind the globally celebrated pop culture and fashion site karlismyunkle.com, director at creative brand consultancy Nephew London, in addition to being the co-creator of the luxury dark matter menswear brand Ada + Nik. Sitting in the Archer Street Bar in Soho with only a coffee and his phone, Thakkar is the very image of the 21st century Renaissance man -- international, on-the-go and with the world at his fingertips. Thakkar thinks in a way that reflects his love of technology; his mind moves at an incredible speed, constantly buzzing with some new piece of information or idea, shifting gear and topic at a truly digital speed. At the age of 26, he has become a major player and poster boy in a digital revolution that has transformed the way the fashion industry operates. Having first entered into the public consciousness as the voice behind "pop-couture site" karlismyunkle.com, Thakkar speaks from experience when he explains that "people are now capable of doing whatever they want, whether it be from their mobile, from their living room or on their laptop... we're all content creators." To read the full interview with Nik Thakkar make sure to pick up a copy of the winter issue of Beige. In the meantime feast your eyes on this exclusive video we produced on the day.
