He has developed branding and logo designs for clients ranging from international corporations to young start-ups to well-known non-profits. Haviv speaks about balancing the desires of clients with the fundamental principles of business and design—in order to get to a great design solution, it’s often important to say “no” to a client. Haviv is a partner and designer at Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv. He teaches Visual Identity Design at The School of Visual Arts in New York City and coauthored the book Identify: Basic Principles of Identity Design in the Iconic Trademarks of Chermayeff & Geismar. Haviv has been a frequent speaker internationally and has served as a judge for the Art Directors Club of New York, the CLIO awards, and other competitions. How do you design a brand identity system? How do you develop a logo? What is the packaging design process? How do you come up with ideas and explore options? Today's episode features The Futur's graphic designer, Min Hye Cho, who shares her step by step process to re-design the Energizer Battery packaging. Chris Do sits down with Min to review her design work and talk about her process. Here's Min's process for this assignment: Brainstorming prompts: Before designing anything, Min finds an inspiring image and uses it to come up with words or prompts that will guide her designs. The logo wordmark: Using the prompts as a guide, she chooses a typeface and starts sketching shapes, icons, and images that come to mind. Going deep with exploration, trying lots of ideas. She then chooses the 3 best wordmarks, refines them and adds color. The packaging: She again goes into exploration mode and creates lots of different packaging designs. Exhausting many design options. Again, she narrows it down to the best ones and refines them into actual size mockups. Hopefully after watching this video, you’ll get a new perspective or at least a few ideas on how to design a personal logo of your own. It’s especially hard to come up with an idea when you aren’t sure exactly what kind of designer you want to be. But don’t worry, personal logos can change and you shouldn’t feel as though you’re designing something that you have to be locked into for your whole life. The best way to go about creating a personal logo is to focus on what is unique about you. That could be anything, but to help i’ll give a few examples. Do you have a unique family? Were you in love with a sport or a band when you were young? Is there something about you that people usually pick up on quite quickly? After you have identified a few things that make you unique, try to make ideas of how you can represent those traits visually. When creating the personal logo, try out a bunch of things and don’t give up if it feels like it’s not working, you’re probably just around the corner from a really great personal logo design!
