Helping Consumers Buy Products that Reflect their Values; How Google's Mobile...

50:07
Google Tech Talks February, 8 2008 ABSTRACT Internet searching and advertising increasingly plays a role in consumer decisions and purchases, yet pertinent information for making value-judgments is currently awkward to ferret out and certainly not universally accessible or useful. There is rarely a feedback loop aligning vendor or manufacturer's environmental, social or governance policies with a shopper's values, so shoppers, over time, rarely cause industries to change their behavior. There needs to be a way for shoppers to aim their purchasing power at achieving social values of highest regional priority. There needs to be a way to accumulate and redeem "social values rewards". What's missing is timely and impactful analysis of a candidate purchases' impact on the Shopper's family, region and planet (expressed according to their values), so that the purchaser can more easily make informed purchasing decisions. With some modifications to Google ads and Google product search, Google could solidify the feedback loop and help consumers, by their actions, build a greener and better world. Speaker: Bruce Cahan Bruce B. Cahan, President Urban Logic, Inc. (a nonprofit organization) Email: [email protected] Bruce Cahan is an Ashoka Fellow, a social entrepreneur, a non-residential fellow of Stanford Law School's Center for Internet and Society, a lawyer, and a banker. In 1989, a steam pipe exploded outside his apartment building, spraying the neighborhood with 220 pounds of asbestos wrapping in an 18-story geyser of steam for several hours. After that, Bruce foresaw New York City's need for geospatial preparedness, and founded Urban Logic, a New York nonprofit, to make America's cities safer and sustainable. Bruce convinced New York to fund and build a multi-agency GIS basemap. As a bond lawyer, he found $20+ million in the City's capital budget to pay for its GIS utility. NYC's basemap was completed just 6 months before the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, and aided in coordinated response and recovery. In the months after September 11th, Bruce joined others at the City's Command Center to organize and staff its Emergency Mapping and Data Center. His team supplied the Mayor's Office, Fire, Police, EMS, military, public health, environment, news and other groups with up-to-date maps of rapidly changing conditions at Ground Zero and throughout Manhattan. Bruce was the catalyst for deploying OpenGIS' SensorWeb project to monitor environmental conditions citywide, and other innovations. Taking 9/11's lessons, Bruce designed the federal OMB's I-Team Initiative to strategically plan and implement spatial readiness across 49 states. Bruce's knowledge of finance, law and organizational barriers to spatial awareness and urban innovation comes from researching and writing major studies for the federal government, including . Financing the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (FGDC 2000) . Aligning Investments in Environmental Monitoring and Management Information Systems (EPA 2002) . The Value Proposition for GeoSpatial One Stop (OMB 2004) . A Regional Portfolio Investor's Toolkit (USGS 2006) In 2005, Bruce moved to Silicon Valley to organize two market-driven mechanisms that support urban sustainability. The first he calls the Means MeterTM, a tool for socially-purposeful consumers to buy products that reflect their values. The second is a bank that amplifies the sustainable impacts of Means MeterTM consumers and their vendors. The bank will reward choices that grow Sustainable ResiliencyTM. Bruce's bank would serve consumers, businesses, NGOs and governments. The bank would offer credit, insurance, investment and merchant banking services, and scale pricing and interest rates based on each customer's impact on Sustainable ResiliencyTM. Bruce graduated from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Temple Law School. Bruce practiced law for 10 years with Weil, Gotshal & Manges in New York, where he specialized in structuring and negotiating complex corporate, bond, creditor's rights and real estate finance and ot...

20. Philip Roth, The Human Stain (cont.)

49:36
The American Novel Since 1945 (ENGL 291) In this lecture Professor Hungerford discusses how the novels we read are shaped by legal and market constraints. She traces a history of censorship from the Comstock laws, to the policing of Joyce's Ulysses and Ginsberg's Howl, and shows how changes in publishing practices have tended to penalize more unusual, less profitable books. Hungerford also touches on the canon debates of the 80s and 90s (citing John Guillory and Toni Morrison), and the issues of intellectual property and internationalization raised by digital literature. Finally, she points to some ways that Philip Roth, despite his controversial representations of Judaism and of women, succeeds in tackling fundamental human concerns. 00:00 - Chapter 1. 2. Putting yourselves into other people's shoes

01:08:49
Game Theory (ECON 159) At the start of the lecture, we introduce the "formal ingredients" of a game: the players, their strategies and their payoffs. Then we return to the main lessons from last time: not playing a dominated strategy; and putting ourselves into others' shoes. We apply these first to defending the Roman Empire against Hannibal; and then to picking a number in the game from last time. We learn that, when you put yourself in someone else's shoes, you should consider not only their goals, but also how sophisticated are they (are they rational?), and how much do they know about you (do they know that you are rational?). We introduce a new idea: the iterative deletion of dominated strategies. Finally, we discuss the difference between something being known and it being commonly known. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Story Driven Modeling with Fujaba: Turning Scenarios into Automated Tests

40:38
Google Tech Talks June, 4 2008 ABSTRACT Story Driven Modeling (SDM) is a systematic software development approach based on scencario analysis on model level. Usual text book approaches start with the derivation of a domain level class diagram from textual requirements specifications. This does not work. Class diagrams structure programs not your domain. Thus SDM proposes to analyse requirements with the help of usage scenarios. These scenarios are elaborated into a flip book of object diagrams that models how the runtime data of the desired application shall be organized. The Fujaba UML tool supports the modeling with such story boards and as a result it generates automatic JUnit tests that setup the modeled scenario, invoke the described functionality and compare the resulting object structure with the object diagram modeled in the initial scenario. The talk will present this approach with a live demo of the approach on a simple example. Speaker: Albert Zundorf

Revelations of Christ - "Can science and religion reconcile?"

05:14
http://www.crystalclarity.com/product.php?code=BRC Revelations of Christ Proclaimed by Paramhansa Yogananda presented by his disciple, Swami Kriyananda An Interview with Swami Kriyananda about the book and Christ's teachings. For years, our faith has been severely shaken by a growing series of attacks, including: the breakdown of church authority, the repeated discovery of ancient texts that supposedly contradict long-held beliefs, and the sometimes outlandish historical analyses of Scripture by academics. Together, these forces have helped create a spiritual vacuum filled with substantial confusion and uncertainty about the true teachings and meanings of Christ's life. The rising tide of alternative beliefs proves that now, more than ever, people are yearning for a clear-minded, convincing, yet uplifting understanding of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. This book, presenting the teachings of Christ from the experience and perspective of Paramhansa Yogananda, one of the greatest spiritual masters of the twentieth century, finally offers the fresh perspective on Christ's teachings for which the world has been waiting. This book presents us with an opportunity to understand and apply the Scriptures in a more reliable way than any other: by studying under those saints who have communed directly, in deep ecstasy, with Christ and God.

01:13:06
Introduction to Ancient Greek History (CLCV 205) In this lecture, Professor Donald Kagan explores the development and character of Sparta. He points out that in Sparta, the ethos of the polis was present to an extraordinary degree. Then he describes how this came about. In short, Professor Kagan argues that the Spartans were able to create a distinct military culture on account of their subjugation of the inhabitants of Messenia, who were forced to carry on the work of farming while the Spartans trained for war. Finally, Professor Kagan examines the education and training of the Spartan citizen as well as the constitution of Sparta. 00:00 - Chapter 1. CSB Safety Video: Anatomy of a Disaster

55:34
Anatomy of a Disaster tells the story of one of the worst industrial accidents in recent U.S. history--the March 23, 2005, explosion at the BP refinery in Texas City, Texas, which killed 15 workers, injured 180 others, and caused billions of dollars in economic losses. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board, an independent federal agency, investigated the accident. The CSB produced this video in March 2008 based on its comprehensive 341-page public report issued in 2007. The video includes a nine-minute animation detailing the events leading up to the blast. It features interviews with members of the CSB investigative team who spent two years studying the causes of the accident. Outside safety experts Prof. Trevor Kletz (Texas A&M University and Loughborough University, UK), Prof. Andrew Hopkins (Australian National University), and Mr. Glenn Erwin (United Steelworkers) provide insightful commentary on the significance of the accident to the world's petrochemical industry. The CSB believes that an understanding of the key findings, recommendations, and lessons from this investigation will help prevent future accidents. DEAD MAN WALKING

07:15
This is my Sunday update quickie, so please stick with me for a couple of minutes. But before we do ANYTHING here are news that may not surprise you: --- Richard Hoover Shelby, Alabamas Senator and top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, took over $100,000 in money from banks, bankers and insurance corporations and their employees during the 2007/2008 period. I am analyzing the situation and will report on it shortly in more detail. --- Never in my life have a seen such a collection of enemies of the state, enemies of the public, in one place, ranging from politicians who torpedo clinical trials for a cure for liver failure for money that is - to those who jeopardize the national security by keeping us dependent on foreign oil to be bought from hostile nations you guessed it: for money that is. --- Alabama Senator Richard Hoover Shelby, better known as Senator from Hell, nearly managed to make our economy a dead man walking by bringing our car manufacturers two steps closer to bankruptcy. --- I am calling him Hoover Shelby not only because he tries to reinstate Hoovers disastrous do nothing policies, but actually looks like him. Hoover Shelbys refusal to provide bridge loans to car makers could easily add another 2.5 million unemployed to the current record 6.5 percent unemployment figure. --- The current number of unemployed has hit 4.43 million. I dont have reliable data but feel relatively safe by assuming that the average annual salary was at least $24,000. That is a loss of purchase power of over $106 billion per year. Hoover Shelbys attempt to add 2.5 million automotive workers to the roll of unemployed would add another $145 billion purchase power loss to it. Never mind the cash outlay to be paid by tax payers in the form of unemployment benefits that would total some $25 billion. According to Fortune, the blame is to be shared, though politics play a major role. --- Now to the bad news. The Energy Department estimates a decline in GDP of 1.4 percent and an unemployment rate of 7.9 percent for 2009. Economists at the University of California, UCLA, forecast a rate of 8.5 percent. --- In Europe, that problem may even be bigger. In Germany, for example the decline in Gross Domestic Product is expected to be 2.2 percent. Germany in its entire existence has never before experienced such a decline. Even in the mid-70s oil crisis the decline was only .9 percent. --- The Daily Mail also reports about what they call Carmageddon. With tens of thousands of cars being stored in green pasture --- Volkswagen tries to use the US version of Carmageddon, by pushing their somewhat more fuel efficient cars into the U.S. market and trying to increase their market share while GM, Ford and Chrysler fight for their existence. - I hate to tell you that VW is just another corporation that has slept and as of this day done little or nothing to electrify their cars. I mean acted on it, never mind blabbering --- For those of you who missed my earlier video blogs on the impact the electrification of cars has on national security, here is a comment on Hoover Shelby. How on earth can an elected official be so incompetent not to understand that our dependence on hostile nations for our oil supply makes us vulnerable to a continuations in part of economic disasters? The car maker bailout was conditioned upon their commitment to electrify their cars. But then, Shelbys colleague Jeff Sessions, also a Republican, just took $5,000 from Chevron just about at a time when Mercedes sued Chevron for restraint of trade. Which was followed by a recusal of the randomly assigned judge do you get it? But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. At least for today. Daily Mail reports about a builder of a steam-driven car tries to break the speed record for cars driven on hot air. I m serious. Being that it runs on hot air, one reader commented that the car should be driven by members of their government. Good idea. Picture this, congressmen driving hot air cars rather than traveling in hot air balloons. --- Oh, by the way, Siemens, the German super conglomerate, was fined by the SEC $800 million dollars for having been involved in a massive bribery scandal. I reported about it and published evidence of payments to elected officials in the US who by the way were not fined. Thats it for today. Take care.

John McCain: Town Hall Meeting 05/02/08

02:57
John McCain Town Hall Meeting Denver, CO 05/02/08 TRANSCRIPT: QUESTIONER: ". . . would you, at least, consider legislation since you were a big proponent against the anti-smoking, that we control tobacco . . . we get it away from the 7-11s and so forth, that we stop lawsuits, we stop any possible tax cuts for tobacco famers, we stop exporting Marlboro products across the globe. I mean, we're talking over years—you know, give tobacco farmers and the system through, but maybe stop smoking, stop trying to tax it out. Just say, 'It's a bad product for America.' JOHN MCCAIN: "Yes sir. And the thing I was puzzled by was when we decided we would want to fund the children's health insurance, S-CHIP program with, guess what—taxes from the sale of tobacco products. Now somebody said, ' Can you help me out here?' So we want to fund a program to give children health insurance, but we want to fund it by encouraging people to use tobacco that kills ya. Only in Washington. Only in Washington could we come up with that kind of a scheme. I just want to mention one other thing about tobacco. And maybe expand just a bit. My friends, there's a farm bill before congress today that increases the subsidies, that gives some of your tax dollars to . . . people in agriculture that make as much as $950,000 a year, that subsidizes ethanol, which as distorted the market, which has then driven up food prices and it is a continuation, in all due respects, of business as usual in Washington, which has to change. I went to Iowa and campaigned in Iowa and said I was against ethanol subsidies and I was against the tariffs on imported ethanol from Brazil, which is made from sugar cane because it distorts the market. My friends, I commit to the agriculture community in America I will open every market in the world to the most productive and best worker and the best agricultural products ever produced but I will not support these subsidies and they've gotta stop. There's too many Americans that need our help now with your tax dollars." (I believe that everything has changed with the Kindle's creation.) For many years I have been an avid reader of eBooks using almost every eReading device on the market. So as an early-adopter of techie gadgets I had been anxiously awaiting Amazon's Kindle since its first rumors. So I immediately purchased it both out of curiosity and hoping for a better "next generation" eBook solution. In case you're wondering whether I'm "that" Steve Gibson, I probably am -- I'm the guy who gets Google's first three or four links when Googling my name. I was driven to write this review because it is somewhat distressing and, it seems to me, a bit unfair for the Kindle's average review rating to be dragged so far down by Kindle NON-OWNERS who, judging from their comments, seem to be quite annoyed by all of the positive comments about a device that's expensive, monochrome, not a general purpose media player, unable to leap tall buildings, or in some way less than they were expecting, wanting, or hoping. In contrast to non-owners, the people who actually HAVE Kindle's appear to universally love it, though with very valid caveats. I think of this as "The TiVo Effect" since, for the right sort of user, the Kindle will be life-changing ... but it certainly won't be that for everyone. Although it took me a few days to get completely comfortable with it, I am now hooked.... 17. The Peloponnesian War, Part I

01:14:18
Introduction to Ancient Greek History (CLCV 205) In this lecture, Professor Kagan describes the events that lead up the Peloponnesian War. He argues that the rise of Athenian power and the concomitant challenge to Spartan dominance pointed to potential conflict. However, Professor Kagan also points out that there were many people who did not want war and that therefore war was not inevitable. The Thirty Years Peace was negotiated, and Professor Kagan finally argues that its clause for arbitration was the key clause that could have prevented war. 00:00 - Chapter 1. The Importance of the Peloponnesian War and Its Continuing Value 09:25 - Chapter 2. The Origins of the War 23:37 - Chapter 3. Athens Faces a Critical Decision 30:31 - Chapter 4. Vertical Axis Wind-Power Turbine ( VAWT )

02:55
[email protected] Safe Silent Strong Silent Wind Turbine .The Vertical Axis Wind-Power Turbine ( VAWT ) is a new product designed . We started the research on VAWT 15 years ago. Now many of the famous experts the world --wide have accepted such new technology and this technology will definitely lead the development of the small and middle size wind-power turbines. Following are the detail features of such VAWT: Safe in operation: Due to the usage of the vertical blade and the force support is of triangle form, the wind force will mainly press on the wheel. So the blades will not be able to fall down, to be broken or to be thrown far away. Noise: The way of the turning of the blades is of horizontal and the design of the blade is of the scheme of the wing of the air-plane, so in operation the VAWT will not make any noise. Capacity of wind resistance: Due to the advantage of the design of the VAWT, the press force the turbine suffered is minimized and as the result such VAWT can stand on the extra strong typhoon of 45 m/s. Space requirement: It needs much smaller working space than other kinds of wind-power turbines. Thus not only saves the space, but also aises the working efficiency. Power curve: It needs lower wind speed for its starting and the increasing of the power is slow and stable. So its production capacity is 10-30% higher than other kinds of turbines. Scope of the wind power needed: Due to the adoption of the new control system, this VAWT is suitable to be used in the wind speed scope from 2.0 -- 25 m/s.. It means we can get full use of the wind source and producing more power economically. Brake system: This VAWT is equipped with both the automatic brake system and the handle brake system. The handle brake system can meet the needs to brake the equipment in the area where there is no typhoon and the extra strong wind. Maintenance: The turbine of the VAWT is of direct driven permanent magnetic system, without using the gear box MOB:+86-013324477373 TEL:+86-431-84524903
