Helping Consumers Buy Products that Reflect their Values; How Google's Mobile...

50:07
Google Tech Talks February, 8 2008 ABSTRACT Internet searching and advertising increasingly plays a role in consumer decisions and purchases, yet pertinent information for making value-judgments is currently awkward to ferret out and certainly not universally accessible or useful. There is rarely a feedback loop aligning vendor or manufacturer's environmental, social or governance policies with a shopper's values, so shoppers, over time, rarely cause industries to change their behavior. There needs to be a way for shoppers to aim their purchasing power at achieving social values of highest regional priority. There needs to be a way to accumulate and redeem "social values rewards". What's missing is timely and impactful analysis of a candidate purchases' impact on the Shopper's family, region and planet (expressed according to their values), so that the purchaser can more easily make informed purchasing decisions. With some modifications to Google ads and Google product search, Google could solidify the feedback loop and help consumers, by their actions, build a greener and better world. Speaker: Bruce Cahan Bruce B. Cahan, President Urban Logic, Inc. (a nonprofit organization) Email: [email protected] Bruce Cahan is an Ashoka Fellow, a social entrepreneur, a non-residential fellow of Stanford Law School's Center for Internet and Society, a lawyer, and a banker. In 1989, a steam pipe exploded outside his apartment building, spraying the neighborhood with 220 pounds of asbestos wrapping in an 18-story geyser of steam for several hours. After that, Bruce foresaw New York City's need for geospatial preparedness, and founded Urban Logic, a New York nonprofit, to make America's cities safer and sustainable. Bruce convinced New York to fund and build a multi-agency GIS basemap. As a bond lawyer, he found $20+ million in the City's capital budget to pay for its GIS utility. NYC's basemap was completed just 6 months before the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, and aided in coordinated response and recovery. In the months after September 11th, Bruce joined others at the City's Command Center to organize and staff its Emergency Mapping and Data Center. His team supplied the Mayor's Office, Fire, Police, EMS, military, public health, environment, news and other groups with up-to-date maps of rapidly changing conditions at Ground Zero and throughout Manhattan. Bruce was the catalyst for deploying OpenGIS' SensorWeb project to monitor environmental conditions citywide, and other innovations. Taking 9/11's lessons, Bruce designed the federal OMB's I-Team Initiative to strategically plan and implement spatial readiness across 49 states. Bruce's knowledge of finance, law and organizational barriers to spatial awareness and urban innovation comes from researching and writing major studies for the federal government, including . Financing the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (FGDC 2000) . Aligning Investments in Environmental Monitoring and Management Information Systems (EPA 2002) . The Value Proposition for GeoSpatial One Stop (OMB 2004) . A Regional Portfolio Investor's Toolkit (USGS 2006) In 2005, Bruce moved to Silicon Valley to organize two market-driven mechanisms that support urban sustainability. The first he calls the Means MeterTM, a tool for socially-purposeful consumers to buy products that reflect their values. The second is a bank that amplifies the sustainable impacts of Means MeterTM consumers and their vendors. The bank will reward choices that grow Sustainable ResiliencyTM. Bruce's bank would serve consumers, businesses, NGOs and governments. The bank would offer credit, insurance, investment and merchant banking services, and scale pricing and interest rates based on each customer's impact on Sustainable ResiliencyTM. Bruce graduated from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Temple Law School. Bruce practiced law for 10 years with Weil, Gotshal & Manges in New York, where he specialized in structuring and negotiating complex corporate, bond, creditor's rights and real estate finance and ot...

Grease is the Word!

01:52
A major race has just come to a close in Athens, Greece. But what makes this trip different from most is that not a single penny was spent on fuel. Let's see how they did it. STORY: They've driven to Athens all the way from London - nothing too unusual about that - except these motors are running on reused cooking oil. Environmental enthusiasts - keen to promote the virtues of cheap and eco-friendly bio-fuels - have been taking part in a 4,000 kilometer rally across Europe. It sounds a little far-fetched but apparently it's very simple to convert your engine. [Ben Mayo, Fuel Converter System Designer]: "This is a converted engine, it looks much the same as a regular engine. There's a few minor adjustments, this is the heat exchanger - that is what heats the fuel up and make it nice and hot and ready for injection into the engine." The ten day mission involved some pretty good bargaining skills - the team managed to obtain used cooking oils from restaurant, cafes and fast-food joints along the way. [Andy Pag, Organizer, Grease to Greece]: "We have been surprised at how easy it has been. The problem has been actually finding places that have oil and arriving at the right moment before its been collected or taken away. But actually when people have had oil they have been really really willing to give it and let us have it. I mean it's a waste product for them so we are taking away their rubbish, really." It isn't the first time that organizer Andy Pag has taken part in such folly - last year he drove to Mali in western Africa in a truck powered by waste chocolate. [Andy Pag, Organizer, Grease to Greece]: "When I first put vegetable oil in the car I was really worried (I thought) Oh my god is it going to work? Is it going to blow the car up? I have now done over I think 6000 miles on vegetable oil and I have had absolutely no ill effects at all." So, what next for this experienced eco-traveler you might ask? Well, he's planning a globe-trotting adventure using aviation fuel made from recycled plastic bags. And if he happens to persuade a few people to convert to cooking oil then his mission will be all the more successful. Revelations of Christ - "Can science and religion reconcile?"

05:14
http://www.crystalclarity.com/product.php?code=BRC Revelations of Christ Proclaimed by Paramhansa Yogananda presented by his disciple, Swami Kriyananda An Interview with Swami Kriyananda about the book and Christ's teachings. For years, our faith has been severely shaken by a growing series of attacks, including: the breakdown of church authority, the repeated discovery of ancient texts that supposedly contradict long-held beliefs, and the sometimes outlandish historical analyses of Scripture by academics. Together, these forces have helped create a spiritual vacuum filled with substantial confusion and uncertainty about the true teachings and meanings of Christ's life. The rising tide of alternative beliefs proves that now, more than ever, people are yearning for a clear-minded, convincing, yet uplifting understanding of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. This book, presenting the teachings of Christ from the experience and perspective of Paramhansa Yogananda, one of the greatest spiritual masters of the twentieth century, finally offers the fresh perspective on Christ's teachings for which the world has been waiting. This book presents us with an opportunity to understand and apply the Scriptures in a more reliable way than any other: by studying under those saints who have communed directly, in deep ecstasy, with Christ and God.
Dual Rotor Blades Low Wind Speed Aero (Hydro) Generator

01:14
Basically a generator has only one moving parts, That is either its armature or field coils is rotating. While this novel generator has both its armature & field coils are in movement. They rotate freely in the opposite direction, just like two approaching vehicles when passing by each other, the speed in between them is equal to the sum of the two individual speed. Apparently the two independent rotating blades when in function might look slow, however, the cutting speed of the inner magnetic flux between the two counter rotating components is fairly high. (within certain limit higher speed induces higher EMF.) The generator output voltage is obviously improved compare to the current generator. An ideal wind generator is constructed without make use of any gears assembly, to increase its R.P.M. as higher ratio output requires higher torque input, thus stronger wind is needed to propel the speed increased unit. And unfortunately places of strong wind condition is not as common. Lacking of the sufficient windy spot to site the windmill is the major mean of why such an environment friendly energy is still uncommon. This practical new concept with the features of low wind speed and leniency of site locating requirement is just good to solve the above mentioned problem. It converts those unsuitable site become qualify and make perfection still more perfect to those excellent sites. This arrangement of two components being driven by two independent rotor blades directly is getting twice the result with only half the effort input is equally good in constructing of a dual turbines hydroelectric power generator, especially when the water drop is lower. In short future, this gaining advantage from both sides greener product going to be one of the common sight to the world.

9. Sparta (cont.)

01:13:06
Introduction to Ancient Greek History (CLCV 205) In this lecture, Professor Donald Kagan explores the development and character of Sparta. He points out that in Sparta, the ethos of the polis was present to an extraordinary degree. Then he describes how this came about. In short, Professor Kagan argues that the Spartans were able to create a distinct military culture on account of their subjugation of the inhabitants of Messenia, who were forced to carry on the work of farming while the Spartans trained for war. Finally, Professor Kagan examines the education and training of the Spartan citizen as well as the constitution of Sparta. 00:00 - Chapter 1. VIDEO ABSTRACT- "MORE IS MORE 2"

09:14
Designing Design Research 7: "MORE is MORE 2" - 4D Product Design for The Everyday DANA CENTRE,, Science Museum, Queen's Gate, South Kensington, London, SW7, UK. Tuesday 6th May 2008. "Is complexity science with arts&design about give us 'polite robotic traffic lights', an 'angry robot toaster', and delightfully choreographed buildings"? MORE is MORE 2 was an afternoon Symposium followed by a Networking Soiree prior to an Evening DIALOGUE in the Dana Centre of the Science Museum. Serendipity Syndicates explore emergent directions in design research concerning the 4D arts with particular focus on 'dynamics of articulated responsive objects. Only recently have the disciplines of design, performance arts, and complexity science come together to explore the design of new 'objects'. There is now increasing recognition that designers involved in robot design and dealing with complexity and the performance arts, can offer insights for the innovative design of 'everyday' products and systems. '4D objects' were available to stimulate emergence of ideas on future design practice and research. New creative industries may well appear in the 21st Century we have yet to conceive of, and it is important to explore 'Avant Garde' ideas for these. This Event aimed to contribute to 'Embracing Complexity in Design II' Research Cluster and part of the UK AHRC and EPSRC Research Initiative 'Designing for the 21st Century' with the intention of making connections between design practice and 'complexity. Designers, artists, complexity scientists, engineers and design managers attended. The participants explored some 'dynamic objects' and reflected upon our relationship to them for 'real world' application as 'delightful' and 'useful' products, systems and services. 2. Putting yourselves into other people's shoes

01:08:49
Game Theory (ECON 159) At the start of the lecture, we introduce the "formal ingredients" of a game: the players, their strategies and their payoffs. Then we return to the main lessons from last time: not playing a dominated strategy; and putting ourselves into others' shoes. We apply these first to defending the Roman Empire against Hannibal; and then to picking a number in the game from last time. We learn that, when you put yourself in someone else's shoes, you should consider not only their goals, but also how sophisticated are they (are they rational?), and how much do they know about you (do they know that you are rational?). We introduce a new idea: the iterative deletion of dominated strategies. Finally, we discuss the difference between something being known and it being commonly known. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Recap of Previous Lecture: Prisoners' Dilemma and Payoffs 06:47 - Chapter 2. The Formal Ingredients of a Game 16:01 - Chapter 3. Weakly Dominant Strategies 35:29 - Chapter 4. Rationality and Common Knowledge 01:05:37 - Chapter 5. TechSmith Mike Morgan talks about 100% Uptime for development servers

02:53
https://www.liquidweb.com/support/heroic-promise.html I'm Mike Morgan from Tech Smith. I'm our IT manager at Tech Smith. We're an software company specializing in screen capture software and most recently been expanding our screen capture offerings to include products that allow you to share captured content on the Internet. Over the course of the past year we've been transitioning our developers and our code base from primarily a desktop application company to a company that's split between desktop applications and online applications. The online applications add value to the desktop applications. That's been a huge challenge because coding C++ and C sharp code for a Windows application is completely different than programming ASP.net code for a web application. That's been a challenge for developers but it's often a challenge for the IT department to make sure we have the network and servers available for whatever it is they come up with. When we were looking around for a host, there is obviously different ways to compare, and for us it was really important that Liquid Web had that technical capability and capacity to host our site and also had the support to back that up. It's the support that really seems to be lacking at other hosts. We're looking for a facility that was engineered professionally and had the capacity and bandwidth cooling and power to handle any needs that we may have in the future. We also know that if we are ever to be down it would be our own fault. With one of the providers we used in the past we had a firewall that was not in an redundant configuration and it crashed and we called for their 24/7 on-site hands-on support service for colocation, and took three and half hours to get technician on site. Now that's a huge disappointment to us. In that particular case we could driven to the data center ourselves had we known it would take that long. Compared to the other hosts we've used in the past years, I would have to say that Liquid Web is the best. We had an event recently where we had suspected that we may have accidentally shut down one of our servers. We sent in a support ticket asking someone to go over to our rack and check out the server and it was taken care of in about five minutes. It is extremely impressive to me. Heroic Support to me means that anytime we have a problem there will be someone available to help us virtually immediately. I know they'll see the problem through to resolution. If the network is down then our online store isn't completing transactions for customers, our customers can't get tech support for a product. And if they purchased online product from us then they can't access what they buy from us, that's a big problem. The Liquid Web network is very impressive to us. Some of the other hosts we've used in the past, the tier 1 carrier is the host and we end up hostage to one company's bandwidth. At various times in the past individual tier 1 providers have had problems so its important to us that we are in a facility that had multiple tier 1 carriers so we wouldn't be subject to those problems.

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine ( VAWT )

01:53
[email protected] Safe Silent Strong Silent Wind Turbine The Vertical Axis Wind-Power Turbine ( VAWT ) is a new product designed on the scheme of wind tunnel force. We started the research on VAWT 15 years ago. Now many of the famous experts the world --wide have accepted such new technology and this technology will definitely lead the development of the small and middle size wind-power turbines. Following are the detail features of such VAWT: Safe in operation: Due to the usage of the vertical blade and the force support is of triangle form, the wind force will mainly press on the wheel. So the blades will not be able to fall down, to be broken or to be thrown far away. Noise: The way of the turning of the blades is of horizontal and the design of the blade is of the scheme of the wing of the air-plane, so in operation the VAWT will not make any noise. Capacity of wind resistance: Due to the advantage of the design of the VAWT, the press force the turbine suffered is minimized and as the result such VAWT can stand on the extra strong typhoon of 45 m/s. Space requirement: It needs much smaller working space than other kinds of wind-power turbines. Thus not only saves the space, but also raises the working efficiency. Power curve: It needs lower wind speed for its starting and the increasing of the power is slow and stable. So its production capacity is 10-30% higher than other kinds of turbines. Scope of the wind power needed: Due to the adoption of the new control system, this VAWT is suitable to be used in the wind speed scope from 2.0 -- 25 m/s.. It means we can get full use of the wind source and producing more power economically. Brake system: This VAWT is equipped with both the automatic brake system and the handle brake system. The handle brake system can meet the needs to brake the equipment in the area where there is no typhoon and the extra strong wind. Maintenance: The turbine of the VAWT is of direct driven permanent magnetic system. MOB:+86-013324477373 TEL:+86-431-84524903

Maintenance: The turbine of the VAWT is of direct driven permanent magnetic system, without using the gear box MOB:+86-013324477373 TEL:+86-431-84524903

titli~2001;clip-mithun;konkona sen;aparna sen~ST HD

09:59
titli -an award winning bengali movie by rituparmo ghosh -aparna sings a tagore poem in her own voice in this clip-haunting is the word . --------------------------------------- Titli -a metaphorical metamorphosis This very discerning product from kolkata [india] took the festival circuit by storm for its audacious comments on modern day approach to feminism and sexuality in 2002. The media driven world we live in today is satirically presented here as a young teenager [Konkona Sen] falls for a movie star [Mithun Chakraborty] who is almost 2 decades senior to her in age and also unknown to her is the ex-flame of her mother [Aparna Sen]. The plot is further given a twist as the mother and daughter accidentally meet the man himself and destiny takes its toll as the fascinated daughter realises the truth behind her mother financially compromised marriage to her father. The truth is the movie wins hands down as it makes no revelations as to if the couple still love each other or they just share a mutual affection for each other, but the resentment and the hostility with the heartbreak suffered by the daughter make the rest of this fascinating tale a treat to watch. The script is simple yet multi-dimensional and the characters are alive rather then living due to the sheer force of the well-etched performances enacted by the entire cast. The daughters vulnerability and hatred for her mother slowly dissolving to give way to sympathy for a by gone time when a woman was dependant on her family when it came to matrimonial issues is a truly metaphorical journey, yet the mothers total passion for her daughter and her grief as she looks at her fragile child and her hostile sorrow is very affecting and apprehensive. But it is the man who is sandwiched between the two women who walks away with the applause in a non author backed role, as he eagerly tries to please the daughter in a sham effort while really trying to get a few moments of happiness with his past love which he lost years ago. The irony that the girl could have been their daughter if fate had been kinder is never lost upon him and his eyes reflect the sense of loss as he looks at the two women, but his resignation to the present is apparent as well as he makes no pretence of hiding his affection for the daughter and his intense emotional involvement with the mother. The movie is a triumph for Mithun and Aparna as they rekindle their lost love for a few moments in the backdrop of the tea estates in the foothills of Himalayas, which are magically captured by the master lens man with a haunting background musical score which leaves nothing to desire, as Aparna renders a beautiful love poem on her lovers insistence without a background score, you can feel the pathos of every lost love resound in the valleys of the eternal Himalayas. The directors is making a relevant commentary on the relativity of time and its immense impact on human existence and he symbolises this with the beautiful fleeting images of Buddhist monks chanting ancient hymns who add a spirituality to this modern day story of lust and love which is a must see for anyone interested in quality cinema from India which does not resort to any melodrama or the song dance routines to add to its credibility. ghosh also has made choker bali an adaptation of mr.tagores book as well as raincoat ,titli means the first rainbow after the moonsoon rain and is the name of the young lady in the movie.

17. The Peloponnesian War, Part I

01:14:18
Introduction to Ancient Greek History (CLCV 205) In this lecture, Professor Kagan describes the events that lead up the Peloponnesian War. He argues that the rise of Athenian power and the concomitant challenge to Spartan dominance pointed to potential conflict. However, Professor Kagan also points out that there were many people who did not want war and that therefore war was not inevitable. The Thirty Years Peace was negotiated, and Professor Kagan finally argues that its clause for arbitration was the key clause that could have prevented war. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Axxys (Hollywood) at The Whisky a Go Go

03:27
AXXYS is a 6-member band of kids that play rock 'n' roll like they mean it. They blow away the audience with heavy guitar riffs, driving, heart-pounding drumbeats, and amazing vocals that include soaring single note lines and harmonies. Their stage presence is riveting. Their raw energy ignites the audience with a blend of classic and contemporary rock for all ages. AXXYS won 1st Place in the Volcom So Cal High School Band Joust on June 30, 2008. They were also the youngest band to ever compete and make it to the finals for The Battle for Warped Tour in San Diego in August 2007. AXXYS has performed at the famous Whisky a Go Go in LA, The House of Blues, The knitting Factory in Hollywood, SOMA, The Jumping Turtle, Brick by Brick, The Chain Reaction, The Majestic Ventura Theatre, fund raisers for cancer and fire victims, the 24-mile marker for the San Diego's Rock 'n' roll Marathon and more. They have opened for national bands to include: Into Eternity, Destroy the Runner, and Joey Belladonna formerly with Anthrax. AXXYS opened for L.A. Guns at the Whisky the first night of the Sunset Strip Music Festival on June 26, 2008. On March 8, 2008 AXXYS was featured on KUSI's Good Morning San Diego. The band has taken the music scene by storm in the almost two years that they have been together, except Erik Griffin who recently joined his long-time friends as a sixth member. Erik was previously the lead singer for Light of Doom, another kid band that had forged their way into the "top 4" in last season's nationally televised competition show, The Next Great American Band. Though each member attends different schools in the San Diego area, they are great friends. As a by-product of this close-knit and impressive 6-pack, the parents have become family, which seems to only strengthen AXXYS's goals to stay together as a band and take their rock to the top.

Black Cotton

02:21
Black Cotton takes a confronting look at the profitable mass incarceration of black males in America. Known as the prison industrial complex, the public and private prisons in our nation have become big business. From the mammoth compounds of our state and federal prisons to the small home town jails, entire communities and even regions depend on the jobs and spin off industries they support. Private prisons are being built at a rapid pace due to the outsourcing of correctional services by state and federal agencies. Many of these firms are public traded and like any other business they are profit driven. The products for these big businesses are inmates, without which they could not exist. As these prison empires plan for growth, they seek ways to keep their prison beds full and this has lead to an ever increasing prisons lobby that advocates for so call get tough on crime legislation and other measures that they know will increase the American prison population which is already the largest in the world. After laws are passed it becomes up to the law enforcement agencies to produce the necessary arrest to satisfy the demand for so called public safety which in turn produces more prisoners. So where does the law enforcement go to fill the demand for bodies? They go to the places where they receive the least resistance, poor minority communities. Low wealth, young black males are the ideal target for the prison industrial complex because they simply don't have the resources or support to fight back when preyed upon. Once slaves that picked cotton in this country, black men have become the new cash crop being picked out of our urban gardens as product for the prison industry.

B2B Launch Tip #6

01:22
Schneider Associates recently collaborated recently with the Center for Business Innovation at Babson College on the Schneider Associates Business-to-Business Launch Survey, which polled sales and marketing executives most involved in successful B2B launches to determine best practices and success factors for launching new products and services. The study identified 10 tips companies can use to improve their odds of launch success in the highly competitive B2B market. Over the next 10 days, Launch TV will profile these tips so you can have a better sense of how to have a successful B2B launch. We'll also be showing you some clips from a presentation given by Joan Schneider, President of Schneider Associates, at The Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) New England Chapter meeting in November. Today's Schneider Associates B2B Launch Tip is: 6. Measure the right success metrics. Surveyed companies used two types of success metrics: 1) results-based measures, which focus on business outcomes such as sales or profits, stock price or market valuation, and 2) process measures, which capture activities that contribute to business outcomes, such as number of projects in the pipeline, time-to-market, or percent of sales from new products. "We recommend using process measures, which can be tracked on a monthly or weekly basis to provide quick feedback," said Schneider. "In contrast, results metrics are lagging indicators. By the time these results are in, it's often too late to change course." In the survey, 45% of product companies and 24% of service companies said they met only half the success metrics they had initially set for themselves. In addition, another 5% of service companies reported they had met none of their success metrics. These percentages indicate a problem with how some companies are measuring success. "If you're consistently missing your launch metrics, it may mean you're measuring the wrong things or that you're setting the targets unrealistically high," said Schneider.

20. Philip Roth, The Human Stain (cont.)

49:36
The American Novel Since 1945 (ENGL 291) In this lecture Professor Hungerford discusses how the novels we read are shaped by legal and market constraints. She traces a history of censorship from the Comstock laws, to the policing of Joyce's Ulysses and Ginsberg's Howl, and shows how changes in publishing practices have tended to penalize more unusual, less profitable books. Hungerford also touches on the canon debates of the 80s and 90s (citing John Guillory and Toni Morrison), and the issues of intellectual property and internationalization raised by digital literature. Finally, she points to some ways that Philip Roth, despite his controversial representations of Judaism and of women, succeeds in tackling fundamental human concerns. 00:00 - Chapter 1. CSB Safety Video: Anatomy of a Disaster

55:34
Anatomy of a Disaster tells the story of one of the worst industrial accidents in recent U.S. history--the March 23, 2005, explosion at the BP refinery in Texas City, Texas, which killed 15 workers, injured 180 others, and caused billions of dollars in economic losses. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board, an independent federal agency, investigated the accident. The CSB produced this video in March 2008 based on its comprehensive 341-page public report issued in 2007. The video includes a nine-minute animation detailing the events leading up to the blast. It features interviews with members of the CSB investigative team who spent two years studying the causes of the accident. Outside safety experts Prof. Trevor Kletz (Texas A&M University and Loughborough University, UK), Prof. Andrew Hopkins (Australian National University), and Mr. Glenn Erwin (United Steelworkers) provide insightful commentary on the significance of the accident to the world's petrochemical industry. The CSB believes that an understanding of the key findings, recommendations, and lessons from this investigation will help prevent future accidents. To learn more about this and other CSB investigations, please visit CSB.gov.

The Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor: What Fusion Wanted To Be

55:17
Google Tech Talks November 18, 2008 ABSTRACT Electrical power is, and will increasingly become, the desired form of energy for its convenience, safety, flexibility and applicability. Even future transportation embraces electric cars, trains, and chemical fuel production (jet fuel, hydrogen, etc.) based upon an abundant electrical supply. Although existing energy sources can and should be expanded where practical, no one source has shown to be practical to rapidly fulfill the world's energy requirements effectively. Presently there is an existing source of energy ideally suited to electrical energy production that is not being exploited anywhere in the world today, although its existence and practicality has been know since the earliest days of nuclear science. Thorium is the third source of fission energy and the LFTR is the idealized mechanism to turn this resource into electrical energy. Enough safe, clean energy, globally sustainable for 1000's of years at US standards. This talk is aimed at explaining this thorium energy resource from fundamental physics to today's practical applications. The presentation is sufficient for the non-scientist to grasp the whole subject, but will be intriguing to even classically trained nuclear engineers. By providing the historical context in which the technology was discovered and later developed into a power reactor, the story of thorium's disappearance as an energy source is revealed. But times have changed, and today, thorium energy can be safely exploited in a completely new form of nuclear reactor. The LFTR is unique, having a hot liquid core thus eliminating fuel fabrication costs and the need for a large reactor. It cannot have a nuclear meltdown and is so safe that typical control rods are not required at all. This design topples all the conventional arguments against conventional energy sources in such areas as: * Waste Production * Safety * Proliferation * Capital Costs and Location * Environmental Impact * Social Acceptance * Flexibility * Grid Infrastructure * Efficiency Should America take this step toward a New Era in Nuclear Energy Production? Hear the case for "The Electricity Rock" and then decide. Speaker: Dr. Joe Bonometti Dr. Bonometti has extensive engineering experience in the government, within industry, and in academia over a 25-year career. Recently completing an assignment as the NASA Chair Professor at the Naval Post graduate School, he supported a ship design study that utilized advanced nuclear power derived from thorium. Working at NASA for ten years as a technology manager, lead systems engineer, nuclear specialist, and propulsion researcher, he lead several NASA tiger teams in evaluating the Nuclear System Initiatives fission demonstration vehicle and missions. He managed the Emerging Propulsion Technology Area for in-space systems, the Marshall Air Launch team, as well as a variety of other power and propulsion assignments and is now the Lead Systems Engineer for the Ares I-Y flight. After earning a Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Alabama in Huntsville, he spent several years as a Research Scientist & Senior Research Engineer at the UAH Propulsion Research Center where he served as a Principal Investigator and manager for the Solar Thermal Laboratory. He has worked as a Senior Mechanical Designer at Pratt & Whitney supporting aircraft engine manufacturing and at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory within the laser fusion program. A graduate from the United States Military Academy, at West Point, where he studied nuclear physics and engineering, Dr. Bonometti served as an officer in the United States Army Corps of Engineers; both in combat and district engineering management assignments. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Virginia, and has authored numerous aerospace technical publications, particularly propulsion and space systems technologies. His technical expertise includes nuclear engineering, specialized mechanical & materials research, space plasmas & propulsion, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and space systems engineering.
