MPD Academy Takes Physical Training to the Streets

01:19
More than 4 dozen future MPD Officers hit the streets for their morning run and physical training session. It is rare to see this many incoming members of the department together at the same time in the MPD’s Academy. These men and women will be officers patrolling the streets of Minneapolis by the end of the year, bringing the sworn staff to approximately 850 officers by 2016.   Every so often, leaders at the Academy like to showcase this hard-working group and a morning run through downtown gives the public a great chance to see our recruits in action in a very public way.   For more information on how to join MPD visit http://insidempd.com/help-mpd/get-involved/ or email Dave Burbank at [email protected] To receive notifications regarding future job opportunities sign up for alerts at http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/jobs/resource/WCMS1Q-074636.

Chief Harteau Addresses 4th Precinct Safety and Access

16:26
“The Minneapolis Police Department recognizes the right of citizens to gather and peacefully protest, and we have the responsibility to maintain public safety and ensure that the precinct is accessible and safe to those that need it. The decision was made to remove people who were blocking the entrance and covering the security camera in the vestibule. We also had received multiple complaints from residents who were unable to gain entry to speak with officers and investigators because people were blocking the entrance. We continue to be sensitive of the protection and rights of all citizens. I thank those in the vestibule for their cooperation in peacefully leaving the space. I’ve been told by various sources that some of those who are demonstrating have plans to escalate their behavior. We will not tolerate property damage or any acts of violence against anyone. Public safety must continue to be our number one priority.” -Chief Janeé Harteau

MPD Bicycle Auction

A call for cameras: MPD wants business owners to help solve crimes

01:24
Minneapolis Police and Minneapolis-based Securonet are asking business owners in the city to invest in public safety and crime prevention, and it won’t cost them a dime. SafeLink (www.mpls.securonetservices.com) leverages and networks cameras that are already in place; giving officers and investigators an immediate connection to camera owners for video footage following criminal incidents. Business owners simply need to sign up. It is a free and pragmatic “force multiplier.” “If you think of something like the Boston bombing, investigators had to go door to door asking who owned cameras and how to obtain the video. Through programs like this, the process is all automated and much more efficient,” MPD Commander Scott Gerlicher said. The system already in place was invaluable on St. Patrick’s Day, when a number of disturbances broke out in Minneapolis. 61 cameras were immediately utilized. 21 local businesses (100% response rate) responded to the call for video footage, allowing the MPD to leverage $305,000 worth of video assets. “Securonet is an innovative initiative that has the potential to transform law enforcement and public safety in the Twin Cities. It was developed to create a strong partnership between the MPD and the communities they serve to deter and investigate criminal activity,” Justin Williams, Founder of Securonet said.

A Message from the Chief: Balancing Public Safety & 1st Amendment Rights

01:07
The Minneapolis Police Department has a long history of helping residents, and those who visit our city, exercise their first amendment rights. It is also our responsibility to do everything in our power to keep people safe. We understand that an upcoming legal decision has the potential to cause some tension and angst in and around our city. As we plan for the county attorney’s decision, whatever that may be, I would like members of our community to know public safety is always our number one priority.   We will not tolerate acts of violence against anyone, and that includes acts of violence against our officers. We will enforce the laws of Minnesota and the ordinances of the City of Minneapolis, and anyone who violates them will be held accountable. We will not allow people to set fires on our streets or occupy and vandalize our buildings. We will not allow people to jeopardize the safety of others by causing massive disruptions and hindering emergency vehicles from helping those in need. The MPD has to, and will, strike a balance between first amendment rights with the safety of everyone.
