Now, the reason I decided to create this particular segment is because I teach thousands of product companies across the country on the subject of selling to retailers and one of the questions that comes up all the time is, “How do I get my products into a retailer such as Home Depot?” And so I really wanted to take a minute to give you some value and to support you in your quest of getting your products in the stores. So, let’s talk about Home Depot. Well, first of all- the reason people are interested in that store is because they have over two thousand stores that they are responsible for. So, this is a retailer that has tremendous buying power and you obviously want to get your product in front of that many people, especially if you have a hardware product or a garden product or whatever related home improvement-type products people want to sell to Home Depot. Now, what happens with a retailer such as Home Depot is that they typically have a corporate buying office where one buyer buys products for that particular retailer. So, for instance, if you have like a home improvement tool, or something like that, you can find a buyer that would buy that product for all of the Home Depot Stores so there is usually one corporate buyer who buys for that particular- for all of their stores. But Home Depot is a little bit different; they also have the ability to buy on a local level. Now, this is really interesting for some of you who are just getting started and are maybe having some challenges getting into the big stores and also for those of you who are reaching out to these retailers and maybe you’re having some challenges, working with Home Depot can really make a big difference for you. If you’re getting stuck somewhere, this strategy can really support you. So, Home Depot has kind of evolved into allowing store managers to buy products on a local level. So, what that means for you is that you can conceivably sell your product to just one Home Depot store and not all two thousand of them. So again, why is that interesting to you? Well, if you have a product and you don’t necessarily have the financial means to go after major retailers such as the home Depot right now; because you are worried about the volume that they’re going to be handling and so forth, if a retailer has a local buying program, that means that you could conceivably just sell to one particular store. And that means… although they buy a smaller quantity which could be great for you, depending on your product or where you’re at in the process especially for a small company. That’s awesome but the other thing is that you could tell people, “Hey, I’ve sold into Home Depot…” but you personally know that you’re selling this product on a local level. Essentially what it really means is that if you are trying to get into Home Depot and you can’t get in front of the corporate buying office to actually sell that product to them, consider reaching out to the store manager at your local Home Depot and letting them know about your product. Just sincerely go, bring your product with you, drive your car to a Home Depot, talk to the local store manager and say, “Hey, do you have a local buying program for this particular Home Depot?” And a lot of times, they’ll say yes and then you can work accordingly to try and get your product in that particular store. Again, it’s just a really great way to get started with a new product and to support yourself but while having this big brand name of having people know that you sold into Home Depot but not, maybe, selling to all of their stores. You can start out small and the cool thing is if you do well with that Home Depot product at that particular store, you can go and drive to other Home Depots, sell to those stores and then ultimate build your brand that way, show proof of sales and then I guarantee at that point, if it does well, you can actually sell to Home Depot corporate and really grow your brand. So this is supportive in so many ways, especially for a small company or just a company really just trying to grow their business. Now, the reason I decided to create this particular segment is because I teach thousands of product companies across the country on the subject of selling to retailers and Safeway comes up all the time, especially for people who have food products and are trying to get their food products into grocery stores. So let's talk about Safeway. Well, there are lots of things I can share with you on this subject, but let me give you one thing to think about. Safeway is very big on something called 'Private Label' products. Most grocery chains are, but today we are going to mention Private Label in regards to Safeway stores. What does that mean? Well, if you walk into a Safeway store, you're not only going to see branded products on their store shelves, but you'll also see products that are called 'Safeway Select,' which is Safeway's brand name. They have other names of Safeway brands at their store, but 'Safeway Select' is one of the common ones that you will see in their stores. Bottom line - Safeway has their own brand of products called 'Safeway Select' in their stores. But what that really means is that they are doing something called 'Private Label.' And what is private label? Private label essentially means that Safeway has their own brand of products, and how they obtain most of those Private Label' products is by working with manufacturers who are willing to sell their products in their stores under Safeway's brand name utilizing Safeway's packaging, etc. So if you have a product that's perfect for Safeway and you've tried to approach their stores and they're not buying your products for some reason, you might want to consider selling to them via Private Label! http://retailmba.com. Best Buy Vendor - How to Sell a Product to Best Buy and Become a Best Buy Vendor Hey everyone! My name is Karen Waksman and I’m the founder of a company called Retail MBA. And today I want to talk about becoming a Best Buy Vendor Now, the reason I decided to create this particular segment is because I teach thousands of product companies across the country on the subject of selling to retailers and Best Buy comes up all of the time. If you have a consumer electronics product, you, typically, want to sell your product to Best Buy. And so, today, I want to talk about, maybe, give you some suggestions, made you think about things that you’re going to need to deal in regards to working with Best Buy. So, I hope this helps. Anyways, let’s talk about what’s on Best Buy. Well, the big thing that I know about Best Buy is that everybody with consumer electronics product, you know, who has ever created one. Probably wants to approach Best Buy or has already done so. And the problem with that, for people like you, who are just getting started or trying to get products into that store is that you’re dealing with the retailer that is competitive. It’s tremendously competitive consumer electronics products. Because, again, everybody is reaching out to Best Buy about their products. So, how do you differentiate yourself? Well, one way to do that, if you’re kind of just getting started, maybe you’ve reached out to Best Buy or you’re, kind of, about to. My recommendation, is always to start reaching out to Best Buy to let them know about your product. But if they say no to you, please don’t take that personally. It really doesn’t mean anything other than you’ve picked one of the most competitive retailers out there in regards to that product type. So, my recommendation to you is to reach out to other retailers who sell consumer electronics products, you know, see yourselves consumer electronics products. Wal-Mart, sells consumer electronics products. I mean, every major retailer now sells consumer electronics products. So, why not reach out to other retailers who don’t only focus on consumer electronics. Get your products into those stores, start building up your business and then, going back to Best Buy and showing them proof of sales of your product. You see, Best Buy, really, ultimately, you know, since they see so many products in the given day, of the same type of thing, constantly. What they really care about? Is money. Because at the end of the day, they want to make sure that they’re generating revenue with their products. If you have, every product in the planet coming to you, you want to make sure that the ones you’re picking is going to make you the most amount of money. It’s just the way it goes in retail. So, again, my suggestion is to go elsewhere, sell your products at your consumer electronics products in other retailers, and then refocus your efforts on Best Buy. And let them know about your successes and the things that you’re doing. And that’ll help you, kind of, grow your business with Best Buy or at least, get started. Now, one other thing I want to suggest to you is that, bestbuy.com, which is their online store, is, probably, it’s actually the Top 10 website on the web today. It’s one of the largest websites on the web. It’s Top 10 site. Which means, they get over, I think, it was, like, a billion visitors to their site. That’s insane. That’s tremendous. So, one suggestion I have for you is to, potentially, reach out to bestbuy.com. And for most of you, you probably think that Best Buy stores and bestbuy.com is the same thing. Well, actually, in that space, bestbuy.com has its own buyers and buys products, specifically, for bestbuy.com and Best Buy stores has buyers for Best Buy stores. So, they’re, actually, another set of buyers for bestbuy.com. So, if you’re having trouble getting into Best Buy stores, the other suggestion is to reach out to bestbuy.com. Because, again, there’s another set of buyers and so forth. And so, you could, potentially, get your products into bestbuy.com, which could be, tremendously, advantageous to you because they have a billion people who come to that site and that could be great for your business. Anyways, I hope that provided value for you.
