Deep Powder at Crystal Mountain - The Good Life Pacific Northwest

05:55
Two days of powder, early ups and beers at the Snorting Elk Cellar is the short story of our trip to Crystal Mountain. Exploring the resort's terrain with pro skier Drew Tabke and freeski coach Wayne Grevey is the long side of things. In episode two of our trip around the Pacific Northwest, we take a wrong turn, find out Crystal is empty most of the time and fall in love with terrain we didn't even know was there. Crystal Mountain is located on the border of Mt. Rainier National Park, and views from the summit include Mount Rainier, the 14,400-foot volcano. Nearly half of Crystal's terrain is "inbounds backcountry," meaning about a 1,000 acres normally out-of-bounds is opened by the ski patrol when conditions are right. The lifts don't operate in this area, but you access it from the top of inbounds lifts. Woods, chutes, and deep bowls challenge your inner-balance mechanisms and you eventually arrive at the Crystal access road where regular shuttles await to take you back to the base area. Crystal Mountain is popular with Seattle skiers and riders because of its comprehensive terrain, but you hear stories of Canadian ski hill employees taking their vacations at Crystal. Snow Science: Finding Perfect Powder

01:59
Ask any powder-loving skier what their favorite type of powder to ski is and their answer usually includes 'deep and light.' The feeling of floating through a bed of snow while almost choking to death is pure bliss. But is there a way to know if the powder you're getting ready to ski is going to be the epic powder you're hoping for? The answer we found was complicated. But there was a constant. We found that the amount of snow wasn't the determining factor, but rather, how light it was. And then we realized the perfect powder day could actually be measured. 2014 Atomic Ritual Ski Review - Men's Powder Editors' Choice

01:59
Pricing, stats and why we love it. "This is a charge-the-mountain-hard kind of ski," Stoeger said of the Ritual. "It's as fun in tight trees as it is in wide open bowls." Atomic brings back the All-Mountain Vantage series, which features Backbone Technology, a vertebrae-like strip of titanium integrated into the wood core. Along with Atomic's Step Down Sidewall construction, the backbone helps to absorb and dampen vibrations while increasing stability and edge grip. Testers noted that the Ritual runs on the stiffer side and gave it high scores for stability. 2014 Blizzard Bonafide Ski Review - Men's All Mountain Editors' Choice

Pricing, stats and why we love it. Blizzard calls the Bonafide one of the "Core 4" in their popular Free Mountain line and testers responded by giving high marks for both carving and versatility. Just under 100 millimeters underfoot, the Bonafide has sandwich sidewalls, a wood core made from a blend of poplar, bamboo and paulownia plus two-and-a-half layers of titanium. 2014 Rossignol Super 7 Ski Review - Men's Powder Editors' Choice

01:49
Pricing, stats and why we love it. "For a fatter ski to carve like this, it feels like cheating," Dittmar said. "Think 'Lord of the Rings: One ski to rule them all.'" The newly revamped Super 7 (part of the 7 Series, which replaces the S Series) features Rossi's new Air Tip technology—a honeycomb design in the tip and tail that reduces core and swing weight. Lightweight paulownia wood reduces the core further. Performance features are not reduced, however, as the Super 7 has sandwich sidewalls and long progressive rocker in the tip and tail. 2014 Salomon Quest 115 Ski Review - Men's Powder Editors' Choice

01:40
Pricing, stats and why we love it. Salomon says the Quest 115 has a "directional design," or is designed to move mostly forward down the fall line, or for twin tips, sometimes switch (as opposed to bi-directional powder skis, which are designed to surf, smear or move in more directions than just down the hill). The fact that the Quest 115 scored high marks for stability and float speaks to its combo of hard-charging attributes and lightweight tips. "This ski is strong and stable through variable snow," Crawford said. "The damp and solid feeling underfoot is a different direction for Salomon."
