Farewell Sienna the Sawfish
Sadly the team at Reef HQ Aquarium have said goodbye to one of our long term residents Sienna the Sawfish. Sienna came to us in 2003 measuring 1.76m.The world class conditions Sienna was kept under at Reef HQ Aquarium enabled her to grow to a whopping 3.3metres. This fully protected species has the potential to grow up to 6metres in length. She was in very good health and due to the exceptional conditions Sienna was kept under, the likelihood of Sienna growing to full capacity was high. Reef HQ Aquarium made the proactive decision to relocate Sienna to a larger aquarium where she can continue to thrive.

Barra feeding - Don't blink or you'll miss it!
Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) are an iconic Australian fish. They can live in both saltwater and fresh but can only breed in salt water. Breeding size fish head downstream to the sea to breed during the summer and during this time are protected from fishing (1st Nov - 1st Feb). An ambush predator the Barramundi will eat almost anything that fits in its mouth from fish through to young water birds and even baby Crocodiles. They open their mouth so wide and fast that they create a vaccuum infront of them that sucks in the water and the unlucky prey animal. They then strain the water out through their gills and swallow their food whole. Check out our resident Barramundi being fed in this video. A popular sport and table fish, Barramundi fishing season opens February 1 2015 at 12 noon. Remember to abide by all recreational fishing regulations and handle all fish appropriately. A quick reminder of size and possession limits: minimum size 58cm, maximum size 120cm and limit of five fish per person.

How to Transport a Shark
It was a sad time in July 2017 with the passing of Cuddles, our tawny nurse shark who had been at Reef HQ Aquarium for 21 years. On March 20th 2018, it was a happy day when we introduced our newest addition to the family, a young male tawny nurse shark. We hope Snuggles will be with us for 21 years, and like his predecessor become a favourite for Reef HQ guests and be an ambassador for sharks worldwide. But how do you transport a shark 350 kilometres?

Tribute to 'Cuddles' the Tawny Nurse Shark
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Reef HQ Aquarium's Tawny Nurse Shark, affectionately known as Cuddles. On Sunday 16 July, Cuddles passed away from natural cause at 21/22 years of age. Over the past 21 years, Cuddles has been an Ambassador for all shark worldwide and viewed by over 2.5 visitors since his arrival in 1996. Cuddles has delighted countless visitors with his tolerance of the divers cuddling him at dive shows. Many of our visitors were left with a desire to cuddle a shark themselves. Cuddles has helped change people's perceptions of sharks as mindless eating machines and helped educate people about the necessary roles of these Apex predators for a healthy marine ecosystem.

The babies at only 1mm long already can change colour to camouflage themselves. Adults are approximately 2cm long fully grown. Aquarists are now raising the juveniles with hopes of displaying them in the future.

Reef HQ Aquarium Leopard Shark recieving a scratch
Check out this video clipping from one of our Aquarists as part of our captive breeding and target training program. It is important to have a calm, relaxed, well handled animal so our Aquarists can measure and weigh the shark on a regular basis. It is also important to see how well the animal is growing by collecting data. Not only does this female Leopard Shark enjoy a scratch, she will swim back to the platform even when food is not presented. Do not try this in the wild. Reef HQ Aquarium Aquarists are trained professionals and have experience in handling marine life.

Cool Coral Time Lapse Camera
Did you know corals are actually animals not plants? Corals are related to Jellyfish and Anemone's. Many build hard skeletons and live as a colony where lots of individual polyps (think of a jellyfish upside down in a cup with their tentacles sticking out) live side by side. They react differently to night time darkness and daylight. Check out this Flowerpot Coral (Goniopora sp.) in one of our testing tanks. Filmed on a time lapse camera over a couple of days, when the light is on the polyps expand and wave around in the current feeding and then at night time the colony retracts for protection.

Reef HQ Aquarium Turtle Hospital Release - Sheldon
Sheldon, a juvenile green sea turtle, was having an unlucky day. He caught a fishing hook for dinner. :( Luckily for Sheldon, those who accidentally caught him took him straight to JCU Vets, who successfully removed the hook. :) Sheldon's stay with Reef HQ Aquarium was short due to the quick action taken by the people who hooked him. Yesterday, with their help, Sheldon was released - hopefully not to catch another fishing hook for dinner! ;)

Reef HQ Aquarium Turtle Hospital Release - Bob
If boating, please go slow for those below - who, like Bob (a recent Reef HQ Turtle Hospital patient) hang out in seagrass beds and shallow areas like those around Magnetic Island and Cleveland Bay. Bob arrived at Reef HQ Aquarium Turtle Hospital in October 2017, having suffered from a boat strike injury, visible with prop cuts on his carapace. The were evidence of a previous boat strike injury, which had healed. Bob was a patient at Reef HQ Aquarium for a few months while we waited for the shell to close around the prop strikes.

Happy International Women's Day!
Reef HQ Aquarium is celebrating International Women's Day. Leonie the Leopard is a true International superstar. Leonie has produced Leopard Sharks without a male. Parthenogenesis is a natural form of asexual reproduction in which embryos develop in the absence of fertilisation. Most commonly found in plants and invertebrate organisms, an increasing number of vertebrate species have recently been reported employing this reproductive strategy. Here we use DNA genotyping to report the first demonstration of an intra-individual switch from sexual to parthenogenetic reproduction in a shark species, the zebra shark Stegostostoma fasciatum. A co-housed, sexually produced daughter zebra shark also commenced parthenogenetic reproduction at the onset of maturity without any prior mating. The demonstration of parthenogenesis in these two conspecific individuals with different sexual histories provides further support that elasmobranch fishes may flexibly adapt their reproductive strategy to environmental circumstances.

Reef HQ Aquarium Wetlands and Bugs
We're taking off a day from our reef rainbow to say Happy World Environment Day smile emoticon Conservation of the ocean starts with looking after our freshwater areas. Make sure rubbish doesn't make its way into rivers or drains and reduce, reuse, recycle where possible. To celebrate here's a video of one of our precious wetlands fish. The Saratoga is a predatory fish found in fresh water areas of northern Australia. She does something cool in this video so make sure you watch closely so you don't miss it!
