World's Largest Stage Show

02:26
In 1978, the largest show ever produced on-stage came to Reno and the world. Don Arden's Hello Hollywood, Hello featured a landing 737 jet, a massive earthquake, three-story waterfall, levitating space dome complete with aliens and an eerily beautiful Space Queen, not to mention a cast of 150 singers and dancers on a massive 1 acre sized stage! Hello Hollywood, Hello ran for nearly 13 years. It was seen by more than six million people. During its run, more than 600 different entertainers appeared in the show and featured such celebrity headliners as Carol Channing, Susanne Summers, Carol Lawrence and many more! Over seven million dollars was spent on the scenery and the 1,273 costumes. The producer, Don Arden, was considered the king of all show spectaculars. The dancers were hand-picked by Miss Bluebell herself Margaret Kelly - the grand dame of showgirls who first met Don Arden at the Lido in Paris. The amazing sets were constructed off location, primarily in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. They were then re-assembled in Reno. It was a large operation with carpenters and assistants hired for weeks of assembly work. The San Francisco earthquake struck the grand stage nightly. The skyline was created out of boards and hinges, and to the accompaniment of fireworks, smoke and plenty of screams from the cast, the skyline trembled and fell — simulating the earthquake of 1906. Also figuring prominently in the show was a Donn Arden staple, the grand staircase! There singers descended night after night, crooning love songs to the elaborately coifed showgirls.

Resurrecting Carrie! - Directed By Michael Stever

12:09
Check Out Our Feature Write-up at 'Death Ensemble!' visit http://deathensemble.com/blog/2012/05/20/resurrecting-carrie/ The literary & cinematic institution that is Stephen King's 'Carrie,' has remained a conundrum for its creators where the musical stage version is concerned. And even though she's yet to see her finest hour on the boards, terms like "cult-hit" and "epic-flop" continue to give 'Carrie The Musical' a legendary notoriety that simply can't be bought. While the mixed reviews for MCC Theatre's 2012 revival of 'Carrie' were not what the theatre community at large had hoped for, it's important to consider when juxtaposed to the 'scathing, 'Brutal-As-Hell' reviews from 1988, this production team was definitely on the right track. "I simply wanted more," notes New York City producer, director & actress Linda S. Nelson. So many elements of this 'Carrie' were spot on, yet when it came to the execution of her telekinetic powers on stage this production really fell short." "It's also clear they chose a more personalized, 'human-interest' approach with the story, which was interesting but might have steered a little too far from the epic 'over the top' Grand Guignol blood-letting Carrie fans thirst for." This itself is a fascinating consideration, and exemplifies just how difficult a 'pitch-perfect' production of 'Carrie The Musical' will be to successfully execute. But between the ever evolving state of on-stage special effects, in conjunction with the use of eye popping projections Carrie will one day have her bloody revenge not only on her cruel class mates and religious fanatic mother - but the evil critics, theatre snobs and naysayers to boot! "I remember when the '88 production of 'Carrie' came out," recalls indie horror actor & filmmaker Joe Zaso, "I saw the TV spots and they were actually really cool, very creepy. Then I saw the reviews and was amazed and how nasty the reviewers were to this show. However, to this day it's the one show all my friends tell me they wish they'd seen, but didn't' get the chance as it closed way too soon." Despite heavy duty success for 'Fame' & 'Footloose' lyricist Dean Pitchford & composer Michael Gore, both admit entrusting 'Carrie' to 'British Import' director Terry Hands, and German producer Fredrich Kurz proved to be the nail in the coffin for Carrie '88. "We were so young and naive back then," notes Pitchford . "Looking back now we'd have done things much differently." Composer Michael Gore admits that their naivete put them at a serious disadvantage. "We were dealing with a talented, but rather overbearing director who had virtually no knowledge, or affinity for the very American institution of 'Senior Prom' - in addition to a nervous German producer who basically fled the country when things got dicey after the New York opening." Given the thunderous cheering, and standing ovations the show received nightly, the producers should have had more faith in Carrie 88's ability to recoup its investment. Of course hindsight is always twenty/twenty. Few people are even aware that iconic directors like Bob Fosse & David Lynch had all thrown their hats into Carrie's 'ring of fire!' "Fosse wanted the piece to be even darker," noted Gore. Fosse was a smart man indeed. The aforementioned 'human-interest' angle has manifested with a focus on "bullying," a term which has grown in the heart's of the 'Carrie 2012' producing team. It's also the focus of a fascinating behind-the-scenes documentary short film you can watch here hosted by director & filmmaker, Michael Stever Stever talks candidly with virtually every major player on the Carrie 2012 creative team, plus legendary actress Piper Laurie who starred in Brian DePalma's classic 1976 film 'Carrie.' Laurie is presently promoting her own riveting memoir entitled, 'Learning To Live Out Loud: A Memoir.' "Bullying has always been there." notes Laurie in Stever's short film, 'Resurrecting Carrie!' "To me it's a crutch used by news organizations. I honestly don't know if it's any worse now or not." Fortunately this current revivals creative team was much more in sync, and it shows. Yet, those trouble spots remain. Who will pick up that 'Carrie Mantle' next? There are a number of theaters vying for that coveted spot. Whoever does deserves major kudos and ONE HELL of a lofty band of creative geniuses to make it work! But worry not Carrie fans, our telekinetic underdog Queen will have her on stage revenge one day soon - and what a glorious day it will be indeed!

Broadway Impact Team Speaks

03:09
California's Proposition 8 awakens one 'Monster' of a 'Grass Roots Movement' Nowhere did the phrase 'Grass Roots Movement' apply more than at New York City's historic Gershwin Theater last Monday, January 12th 2009. It was there the casts from the Broadway Musical Wicked, along with its three other U.S. based companies hosted simultaneous Defying Inequality dance parties to raise awareness and funds to overturn the controversial Prop 8. Helmed by Wicked composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz in conjunction with a talented and driven production team, Defying Inequality is both getting the word out, and fast becoming a force to be reckoned with. It's also merely a precursor for an even bigger Defying Inequality event scheduled for this coming February 23rd, also to be held at The Gershwin Theatre. "There are upwards of over 1,200 different legal rights that we as heterosexual couples have within the bounds of marriage that gay couples do not," notes coordinator DiOnna Pisarri, "that simply needs to change." The evenings spotlight had its highest beams set on the newly formed Broadway Impact.com organization. The Grass-Roots Movement created by Gavin Creel, Scott Duquette, Jenny Kanelos, and Rory O'Malley not only make an impressive team, but are an inspiring testament to the true spirit of activism and desire to promote awareness for marriage equality. The Broadway Impact.com directive entails a massive letter writing campaign geared exclusively towards Swing Senators throughout the Country. For more information, and to support Broadway Impact.com, visit http://www.BroadwayImpact.com. Actor turned filmmaker Michael Stever was on hand conducting interviews with a number of attendees, including Production coordinators Anthony Galde, Jen Waldman, Schele Williams, DiOnna Pisarri as well as Broadway performer Billy Porter. Stever also made no qualms about discussing his frustrations with his Sacramento based Mormon upbringing. "I love my family dearly," noted Stever. "Obviously I'm deeply saddened by their choice to support Prop 8. It's basically a double slap in the face in that by doing so they're violating The Mormon Church's Constitutional standing as a Not-For-Profit Organization. Separation of Church & State means just that." "This is my bottom line," mentioned Galde, when asked what he thought of the millions contributed by The Mormon church to support Prop 8. "Go take those millions of dollars, and go feed somebody. All we want to do is love. This is not a State issue; it is a Federal, human rights issue! Its really very simple, I pay my taxes, I'm a good deed doer, and it should really be the same for everybody." For more information on the Defying Inequality movement, visit http://www.BroadwayImpact.com Michael Stever is a full time freelance camera man, film maker and writer shooting and editing mini-DV projects all over NYC. Recent clients include Broadway vets Mary Bond Davis as well as Judy McLane at West Bank Cafe's Laurie Beechman Theatre, the Screen Actors Guild's 'BookPals' group, Barnes & Noble, The Drama Desk Association, & Play Bill magazine columnist Ellis Nassour. Radio City Christmas Show Opener - We Need A Little Christmas (1990 - 1993)

06:48
* Produced by MSG Entertainment & Radio City Entertainment, no copyright infringment intended: * The Radio City Music Hall Christmas Show began in 1933 when the Music Hall presented lavish live stage shows along with the latest Hollywood feature films. The first Christmas show was produced December 21, 1933, along with the RKO musical movie Flying Down to Rio, and ran for two weeks.[1] This was just one year after the opening of the Music Hall in 1932. The show was created by the Music Hall's stage producer Leon Leonidoff and designer Vincente Minelli. It consisted of an overture with Erno Rapee and the Radio City Symphony; a solo on the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ; a Toy Shop Ballet; The Rockettes' "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers", choreographed by their founder, Russell Markert; and "The Living Nativity". These last two scenes have continued in every edition of the annual show up to the present day. The Christmas show, like all the Radio City stage shows, was produced and choreographed by Leonidoff and Markert through the early decades of the Music Hall's history. * In addition to the Christmas show's annual production at Radio City, road companies have presented a touring version in theaters throughout the United States. The first Christmas Spectacular outside of Radio City was presented in Branson, Missouri at the Grand Palace Theatre in 1994. The Rockettes, having been originally founded in St. Louis (where they were called the Missouri Rockets), literally returned home for the extravaganza. The successful show launched a national tour the following year. The original touring show was presented in conjunction with Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation and ran from 1994 to 2003. In 2008, a new tour consisting of the 2007 edition was launched, playing at selected theaters and arena venues around the country.

Sam Dubel / Sergio Real Tribute Video

10:06
Today, on January 21st 2012 at 6:45pm, our dear friend Sam took his last breath, and transitioned after a brutally/mercifully(?) fast bout with inoperable liver cancer. Those of us fortunate enough to be at his bedside are but a small handful of people lucky enough to call Sam their friend. Sam's spirit transcended this particular earthly-realm on August 13th, 1965 and left an imprint on our hearts like no other ever will... Interestingly, what often determined how well one actually knew Sam, sometimes deepened the more one understood Sam's spiritual & God-loving essence. It's as if Sam had this built-in radar for those who were either striving for some kind of spiritual enlightenment, or at the very least acknowledged in something bigger than ourselves in the Universe. Most who knew and loved Sam were also privy to the fact that he was one of the most popular Brazilian/Portuguese gay porn stars (as Sergio Real) to ever 'machismo' his way across a screen! This phenomenally 'contrasty' (to say the least) juxtaposition of devoted 'Disciple-Of-God-By-Day' and 'Swarthy-Brazilian-Porn-Star-By-Night,' was truly at the core of Sam's uniqueness. Not merely because this juxtaposition is virtually impossible to find anywhere, but because everything about Sam was utterly genuine where this is concerned, from the inside out. There was no pretense, no artificiality, no arrogance in what made him so good at what he did. I would be remiss If I didn't also mention a third component to what made Sam a true 'Wizard' in every sense. He was without a doubt, one of the most phenomenally talented singer/musicians I have ever come across in all my years in the business. Sam could effortlessly 'turn you into putty' the minute he picked up his guitar, and opened his mouth to sing... As a filmmaker, camera man & editor who thanks his lucky stars daily that I am able to do what I love and make a living at it, It is an honor to be able to say that Sam's cabaret debut at The Triad in 2005 (ironically and humorously titled 'The Naked Me') was one of my first professional filming gigs. Sam opened his show with 'Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries.' a most fitting opener. Having faced religious persecution from his family, Sam was keenly aware of the importance of looking inwards for that 'spiritual fix' and although not his aim or goal, he could even shake the faith of the most hardened, 'self described Atheists' from time to time. As I type this now with tears streaming down my face, I sit in absolute awe at this man's bravery, and willingness to accept the hand that life gave him with class, dignity, and an unwavering respect for his maker... Thank you Sam, you are my hero. Michael Stever Tribute video Filmed/Edited By: Michael Stever
