PJ Harvey - Rid Of Me - 01 Rid Of Me (Private Remaster)

A new 'Private Remaster'... What a good album... Brutal, aggressive, abrasive are some words... but damn, it was mastered so quietly! Yeah, dynamic range is a nice thing but the levels this album was originally mastered meant I rarely listened to it, especially when out and about because I couldn't get my iPod loud enough to drown out the whir and hubbub of the buses I'm usually on! So here it is. It is anything but brickwalled. I HATE digital clipping, it's ruined so many albums I love... again, the opposite problem to what I was saying about the original "Rid Of Me" CD, but the same after-effect, music that I love but rarely want to listen to. I had a careful look over the waveforms, decided what levels to work with and used as minimal compression possible to get the levels to a more suitable point. I can't hear any problems with digital clipping and I've already replaced the original CD with this one on my iPod! Enjoy! And remember, buy the original, support your favourite bands and musicians!

Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible (Private Remaster) - 01 Yes

So, this album is one of my favourite albums of all time. Possibly my favourite. But here is my personal spin on it. I have been listening to this version, my private remaster, for years now, and then realised I hadn't released it to YouTube. As we all know, the album was recorded in a budget studio in Wales. It's sound was essentially that of a budget studio in Wales, and don't get me wrong, regardless of the sound it was and still remains an incredibly bloody brilliant album. But the original UK mix has a murky sound that, in my mind, marred the excellent songs. Later, the U.S. mix was released on the deluxe re-release of the album. Hmm, it was getting there, but a little too bombastic, and lost some of the unpolished charm of the original mix. What I tried to achieve was a balance I guess, between the original mix and the polish and bombast of the U.S. mix. I've only listened to this version since it was made a few years ago after a few different attempts on getting the sound nearer the target. I've had positive feedback from some rabid Manics/Holy Bible fans too, which is a huge compliment! Hope you enjoy! And remember, support your favourite artists by purchasing their music!

Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade (Private Remaster UPGRADE) - 01 Something I Learned Today

02:03
Many year ago I uploaded this remaster to YouTube, it was the first time I shared it with anyone, and thankfully over the years it's garnered some positivity. It was before HD uploads really took off and my original files are now only playing back with substandard audio quality (yes, I know it's YouTube, hardly the place to share audiophile quality sound!) so I decided to create new HD files in the hope that these will before a nice upgrade over the original uploads! Oh, and back then I had to split "Reoccurring Dreams" into two videos due to time limits, thankfully now those limits are lifted! This is one of my oldest private remaster projects, along with "You're Living All Over Me" by Dinosaur Jr. Both were originally released on CD by SST, and both had sub-standard audio quality. Hüsker Dü's back catalogue remains, for the most part, untouched in the realms of reissues and remasters. Many fans would love to see a sympathetic remastering and repackaging program of Hüsker's music, I know I would! Here's what Bob Mould said during an interview with Faster Louder in March 2013: Interviewer: "Is a remaster of Hüsker Dü albums physically possible? And is it something you've given any thought to whatsoever? There seems to be a lot of fan demand." Bob Mould: "I haven't given it any thought personally, mostly because the logistics of it would be, wow ... Firstly, where are the masters? Second, who owns the masters? Third, who's going to master them? Fourth, who would agree to give up rights so they can all go together? Nobody ever signed any contracts, in an ideal world everyone would agree, and that would be great but ... I haven't given it that much thought. If it's going to happen someday, I'm sure it would be a perfect storm, where everything just lines up all at once. But yeah I don't push it, I don't think about it. As I said before, I'm pretty busy these days, and keeping track of everything is a challenge." Seems we may never see it happen... Anyhow, he we go, my private remaster, re-uploaded with hopefully improved YouTube audio quality! Please remember to enjoy, and support your favourite musicians by purchasing their music!

Þeyr (Theyr Peyr) - Rúdolf (Rudolf) [From 'Rokk i Reykjavik'] (Remastered)

02:58
All the previous uploads of this video were running too fast, this should now be at the correct speed with audio resynced (as best as possible) from the "Rokk i Reykjavik" CD! Icelandic band Þeyr performing "Rúdolf" for Rokk í Reykjavík which was a documentary directed by Friðrik Þór Friðriksson Vocals - Magnús Guðmundsson Guitars - Guðlaugur Kristinn Óttarsson & Þorsteinn Magnússon Bass - Hilmar Örn Agnarsson Drums - Sigtryggur Baldursson Þeyr on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theyr Guðlaugur Óttarsson: http://www.islandia.is/gko/ http://www.myspace.com/godkrist Þorsteinn Magnússon: http://www.myspace.com/steinimagg The meaning of the song "Rúdolf" was the focus of controversy among many who thought it was an allegory to Nazism. It should be noted, however, that Þeyr was an ANTI-FASCIST group. Several years later, drummer Sigtryggur Baldursson said: "The song 'Rúdolf' was supposed to be a criticism, but was really interpreted as we were Nazis." K.U.K.L. (KUKL) - Anna (Official video AND perfect audio! VERY RARE!)

04:10
Finally the video AND perfect audio! This is a combination of the most complete video from YouTube with audio from the "The Eye" CD. The video was cleaned up as best as possible (a YouTube video is hardly the best source but I don't have this on VHS!) Syncing won't be perfect, but it's not too bad! Very rare! UPDATE (April 2013): On this very thread Gudlaugur Kristinn Ottarsson (the guitarist in K.U.K.L.) stated: "The perfect song, written in 7/8 beat in late 1983 - and still with a censored end :-)" Censored end? Now I am very intrigued indeed! I wonder what happened...

Kate Bush - The Dreaming (Private Remaster UPGRADE) - 10 Get Out Of My House

05:26
***Please play this at 720p for the highest quality sound available on YouTube*** After a period away from listening to this album, I revisited my original private remaster... What was I thinking?! Bloated bass galore! So, I went back to the drawing board and here's a new private remaster of this album. Much more subtle changes, but sounds far better to my ears! Here's the info from my previous uploads: "I've been listening to Kate Bush A LOT lately. So much so that I'm annoying friends that quite dislike her... Oh well! Personally, this album is growing on me with each and every listening, it's wonderful, amazing, quirky... it transcends those words, but you probably know that already. I know fans are very protective of their favourite artists backcatalogues so please don't take offence at this, my personal (and very quickly done) remaster of "The Dreaming". Why? Well, I'm not sure, I've never heard anything bar the CD issue of this album, and well, it's very thin sounding, has a slight metallic edge. Is it 'meant' to be like this? Was it an 'artistic choice'? Was it simply a sub-par mastered CD? Maybe you'll like this, maybe you won't. For the moment, it's my version of choice on my iPod. As I become more familiar with the album I may remove these and attempt a better remaster. Until then, here it is... PLEASE support your favourite artists by purchasing their music!"

Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade (Private Remaster UPGRADE) - 02 Broken Home, Broken Heart

02:05

Ultravox - Slow Motion (Live At Reading 1978) (Remastered)

All credits to birdy974 for originally uploading the clips of Ultravox playing Reading in 1978! I discovered John Foxx era Ultravox through those two videos and decided to clean them up slightly (both the picture and the audio) thanks to TMPGEnc and Adobe Audition! Hope they're as good as the originals!!! Enjoy :) This is obviously not true HD quality, I merely resized them to make full use of YouTube's HD capabilities...

Sonic Youth - Sister (Private Remaster) - 02 (I Got A) Catholic Block

03:27
It was this album from the Sonic Youth back catalogue which a fellow YouTuber asked me to remaster... So here's my first attempt at a private reworking. What's up with the album? Not a hell of a lot, but a bit of background research showed that it was recorded with a valve/tube mixing desk and that made for the lovely, creamy guitar sound, and according to the band, didn't really do the drums justice. I agree, it's mostly the drums that have suffered with a bit of a 'cardboard box' sound resulting! Without the multitrack mastertape there's hardly any chance of improving this much more, but here it is, my work so far... Enjoy, and please support your favourite artists by purchasing their music!

I once tried to contact Magnus Carlsson about 'Robin' getting a DVD release sometime... Well, until that day (will probably never happen!) here is all thirty episodes, cleaned up as best as I could from poor quality sources (sorry I couldn't remove the interlace line problems!) Enjoy! All credit goes to nuttysteve80 for uploading the full Top of the Pops episode this performance is from, and to Steenie Dawson for pointing me in it's direction! I would never have found it otherwise! I clearly remember this performance back when I was a teen and ran out to track down single in the days after (I bought the cassette single, remember them?!) Ever since I've wanted to see this clip again... and so here it is! Great, well written pop song and we don't get many of those nowadays... enjoy!

Kate Bush - The Dreaming (Private Remaster UPGRADE) - 02 There Goes A Tenner

03:26

Manic Street Preachers - Strip It Down (Promo video, remastered)

02:28
WARNING: The cheap green screen background that constantly swirls in this video will probably cause seizures of some sort! Eek! The moral of this message? Don't use swirly, rotating backgrounds in your videos... ;) (Slideshow at the start ends at 0:22) There are a few clips of this very rare video floating around on YouTube, all of which were incomplete, and had bad audio. It seems the Manics would rather forget this slightly embarrassing, but funny early clip (bad miming, poor Sean not being allowed to hit his drums 0:44, Nicky Wire dropping his bass 1:39!)! I'm assuming it was their very first promo video, maybe even self-financed... They're so young! I've done my best to give you the whole song and the longest sections of the promo video that are out. Where there wasn't any video I substituted for some photos of the band from this era... I also had to chop in a tiny section from a black and white video where the colour one drops out badly! Surprised I got it to work! Enjoy! Please support your favourite artists and purchase their music!

Manic Street Preachers - Stars And Stripes - Nat West-Barclays-Midlands Lloyds (US Mix)

04:36
And now, finally... the four songs remixed for the US release of The Manics "Generation Terrorists"! I've always hated the sound of the original "Generation Terrorists". The mix wasn't all that, covering all the songs in far TOO MUCH 'big stadium band' reverb and those 'drums'! Upon finding out that the drums were merely a drum machine that Sean programmed (he did quite well to be honest, but it doesn't cover up for the awful synthesized imitations of drums that the best of drum machines could make in those days) I had to track down the US mixes. For the American release of "Generation Terrorists" the record company over there decided to butcher the album to make it more to the 'taste' of the American audience. Not such an awful thing considering the filler the album could've easily shed, but songs such as "Born To End" (a great "GT" song if you ask me!) got the axe for the title being too... hmm... 'depressing sounding'?! Seriously, who makes these decisions! They chopped off any spoken intros to most if not all the songs, took away all the quotes from the artwork apparently and... released four songs with REAL drum tracks! UPDATE: Wikipedia now states that the live drum tracks were laid down by American drummer, Zachary Alford) (PREVIOUS INCORRECT INFO ASSUMPTIONS: I'm assuming Sean laid down real drum tracks to enable James to start laying down the guitars, bass and vocals while Sean programmed the drum machine(apparently the whole album was pretty much Sean and James doing all the parts) and this is probably where the real drum tracks came from.) "Slash 'N' Burn", "Nat West-Barclays-Midlands-Lloyds", "You Love Us" and "Little Baby Nothing" all got the "real drum mix" treatment and it gives us punters a taster of just how good "Generation Terrorists" could've been. As per with US mixes, it's all a bit bombastic, a bit TOO bombastic perhaps but nevertheless it's the best these tracks have sounded! The four remixed tracks were released on a Japanese mini-album called "Stars And Stripes: Generation Terrorists US Mix" along with the two versions of "Repeat" and "Crucifix Kiss" from "Generation Terrorists" and "Democracy Coma" which was originally the b-side for the "Love's Sweet Exile/Repeat" single (and what a b-side it is!) I have only put the remixed songs up as the rest are the standard versions available elsewhere! I've still to get a true US copy of "Generation Terrorists" but I did manage to get the "Stars And Stripes" CD and recommend it to anyone wanting to hear the remixed tracks! Search Amazon, eBay, eil, etc etc! ENJOY!

Jawbox - Novelty (NEW Private Remaster) - 08 Static

04:08
AUDIO ONLY Private Remaster of Jawbox's second album "Novelty" from 1992. I wasn't happy with the last Private Remaster I put on YouTube of this album so here is a new, improved (in my honest opinion) rework. So enjoy the tracks, your feedback is always appreciated! Notes: First you got Husker Du's "Zen Arcade" and now you get Jawbox's second album "Novelty". It was their first long-player to feature second guitarist/vocalist Bill Barbot and was the last to feature Adam Wade on drums. So why the private remastering treatment? From the allmusic review for "Novelty", "The only negative aspect is Iain Burgess' murky production. Normally an outstanding producer, Burgess gives Novelty a bizarre din that frustrates in places. Adam Wade's drums sound a bit canned, and J. Robbins' vocals sound too "from the depths" on occasion." Perhaps the din was a 'creative choice'? But I think it was a frustrating murk that made this great album sound veiled and almost powerless to these ears, or certainly not as hard-hitting as it should've been! Aztec Camera - Walk Out To Winter (Original Rough Trade 7" Tony Mansfield Version)

Bought a copy of the 7" on eBay seeing as it's such a difficult version to find. It was supposed to be in excellent condition but it was covered in crackles and a few scratches. This is best I could get from it. I later found out that this version was included on a 3" CD single of "Somewhere In My Heart"! And that Domino US are re-releasing "High Land, Hard Rain" with a LOT more bonus tracks than the recently bodged UK re-release! Anyway, until I get a better version, here is my vinyl recording with restored artwork!

Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising (Private Remaster) - 02 Brave Men Run (In My Family)

03:37
I've recently started delving into Sonic Youth's back catalogue. Of course I've been aware of them for over a decade, and "Death Valley '69" was once included on a free CD from Vox magazine (and I loved that song to bits)... But just now I've started filling the gaps in my collection. I was a bit annoyed to find that a lot of the early albums (pre-Geffen) have been, as far as I can tell, deleted. So a trawl through eBay has put a few of them in my hands and so we have "Bad Moon Rising", my private remaster. The Blast First has a bit of an odd sound, bit limited in the treble department, bass guitar a bit boxy sounding. The DGC issue, don't even go there... 1) The track splits are all incorrect in relation to the vinyl and original Blast First CD 2) There is SEVERE wow and flutter problems throughout the disc! It's as if the master tape was transferred with someone turning the reels by hand! ;) So here's my remaster of the album, have a listen, tell me what you think, I'm always happy to receive constructive criticism! ;) Enjoy the sounds and please support your favourite artists by purchasing their music!
