HOW DID YOU START BUTLER? A lot of up-and-coming entrepreneurs ask, “how do you even get started with launching a business?” I don’t have all the answers, for sure… but I can give some insight based on things I learned from launching Butler. First, let me start with some things that are NOT necessary: - It’s not necessary to go to college. College, in my opinion, doesn’t properly prepare people for the real life of entrepreneurship. Look at the top entrepreneurs in America, and get their perspective on this issue. - It’s not necessary to have a lot of money. Start with the resources and opportunities you have in front of you, and make something happen. - It’s not necessary to have a perfect plan. There is no such thing. You’ll learn more by doing than by contemplating and strategizing. Do some research, formulate a strategy, but don’t get caught up in the details. - It’s not necessary to fit a specific mold. You don’t have to be the brightest, smartest, most outgoing person. Being diagnosed with a learning disability, almost failing high school and being a natural introvert were obstacles I had to overcome, but not excuses that held me back. Now, here are some MUSTS: - You MUST know that you know you want to be an entrepreneur. If you are straddling the fence your business will never take off. At some point, you need to go all in. - You MUST value ongoing education. Not formal education, necessarily, but a constant habit of learning and growing. Watch videos, read books, listen to podcasts, search the internet. Never stop learning. - You MUST hustle. If you want to get the results most people will never get then you have to do the things most people aren’t willing to do. - You MUST DO IT! Don’t overthink it. Be willing to figure things out as you go. Those are my thoughts. What are some insights you can give, or questions you may have when it comes to launching a business?

We live in a day and age of personal branding. Instead of promoting products, services and companies, we have thousands of people amassing huge followings by promoting themselves… and the people love it! In light of this reality the question that often comes to me from business owners is “should I promote myself (my personal brand) or my company?” I personally believe every business owner should do both, simply for the fact that your personal brand transcends your business. If/when things change or pivot in your industry, a strong personal brand will open up doors of opportunity that may have been restricted for your business.

Stop Overthinking It

I just wanted to share this little piece of advice as I was thinking about it. As a creative, I often tend to overthink things. "How should it look?" "How should I present this?" "How should I say it?" One of the things I have found most helpful is to just internalize things so well that they just become second nature. That way you're never really caught off guard when a subject comes up, or you are expected to present.
